Who is Jim Ringer and why am I just hearing about him now?

I just heard some stuff by this California folkie named Jim Ringer, and am surprised I hadn't heard about him before. The stuff I heard was fantastic - anyone know anything about him?

i used to go see him in berkeley singing with his wife mary mccaslin. great singer/songwriter from california central valley. get the best of cd. great music. very much underappreciated.
