I think classic.

Painful bastardry.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 October 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I quite enjoyed "songs from the rain" when last I listened to it, though that may be a year or three ago. I have no excuse, mind, just that they seem to find their music enjoyable, and I concur.

Also they do an energetic live afternoon Glastonbury show. As Irish "stalwart troopers" go, I'd pick them over the intensity of The Frames any day.

A friend of mine went to "rock school" with one of the guys from the Hothouse Flowers. He said he was a prick.....Mind you, so is my friend.

Michael B, Monday, 27 October 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"don't go" was classic. especially when he shouts "black cat!" everything else was a big fat dud.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 27 October 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

as far as i'm concerned crusties should stick to the gabber and leave mediocre folk rock well alone...

robin (robin), Monday, 27 October 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Fairly shite, they are an Irish band afterall.

They are marginally worse than the Frames but better than any of the singer songwriter twats. Does anyone like Josh Ritter or Paddy Casey except D4 office types?

I saw Casey in that poolhall where the Palace nightclub/country student barndance used to be, he had them turn off the jukebox and play his own CD all night, over and over, for about 4 and a half hours.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 27 October 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i didn't know the palace was a poolhall now...

robin (robin), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"don't go" great, rest rub

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Fairly shite, they are an Irish band afterall.

In music, there apparently is no country solidarity.

For two seconds, they were classic...then, they put out another album.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't Go is terrible. Even the black cat can't redeem it. Haven't heard anything else.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember having an argument with a friend a couple of years ago defending Irish music even though the only acts I could name were Thin Lizzy, Them and MBV but I had to concur that we're responsible for a lot of shite. Looks like there's no respite from it either what with bloody Damien Rice and all that lot.

Michael B, Tuesday, 28 October 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

ronan. josh ritter is surely an american? you're right about him being dullsville, though.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

They were fantastic! They were better than The Smiths, and even Menswear.

kirsty sock, Tuesday, 28 October 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Ho.Ho.Flowers - I tried to put up with an entire concert of theirs at an open air festival once.
It turned out to be a fat pain in the rear rather fast, so I got offa my arse and went to buy me a fat hot sausage in the other end of the field. The sausage, tho nothing special, was enormously more enjoyable.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone remember their appearance in Lovejoy? cheesemungously hamtastic

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

A load of fucking tripe -- I was in frst year of college in 88 and unfortunately had to witness all the idiots proclaiming them to be the new messiahs. They came along in the middle of that whole Fishermans Blues phase in Ireland where everything had to be about secondhand suede coats and ripped doc martin boots. If ever a band truly believed their own hype twas the Shitehouse Flowers.

David Gunnip (David Gunnip), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Ritter's apparently an honorary paddy!!!!! What hairbrained mag could dream that one up.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan, did u get my e-mail?

Michael B, Tuesday, 28 October 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah just replied now sorry.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Dud.
But I loved them in the 10th grade. I have this really fond memory of showering in the bathroom of my friend's house after an all-night party. I'm 15, and the winter sun peeks in through the window. It's a cold, but very bright day. I very distinctly remember the sweet/sharp smell of the shampoo, as the opening guitar riff off 'I'm Sorry' (the first track on 'People', I think) can be heard clearly through the door. My friend has put the record on, and he is beginning to clean up after the party. It was a time of sorrowlessness (can one actually say that?). Ahh, those memories ...

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
I like "I'm Sorry" and "Don't Go," both overblown to the point of goodness.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

i still love "don't go" even if the 'sirocco' line is daft

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Monday, 20 June 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

Dud. Misfortune of seeing them last year in The Village. Messianic poses and adoring lady fans all in evidence. Really woeful.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

"Painful bastardry" is still one of the greatest collocations in the history of ILM.
