XTC's "Dear God" covered by Tricky

Heard it on the radio this morning....

WHY?

(I'm lamenting Tricky's choice of covers more than who got to cover XTC.. and i'm a big XTC fan. But "Dear God" is so rigidly un-reinterpretable, it's sick. Also Tricky's cover of "Pop Muzik" was grebt)

Basically, he only used the first four chords of the song and looped it (though I think played live throughout) while he and fellow female whisper the lyrics nervously and awkwardly over it. (par for the Tricky, in other words.). I was just wondering why he didn't just write a new song instead, since I think it would have been more interesting. "Dear God", as much as I love XTC, can't be covered without the performer sounding even more overwrought and "deep". aah well.

The title of this thread says made me cringe immediately. There's no way this could be anything but terrible.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, did I hear a Foo Fighters cover of "Darling Nikki" the other morning, or did I dream that? It seems like a strange idea to say the least.

It is almost as if his defenses have become fences.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

What's to dislike? He mutters it and it's quiet, there's no attempt at "interpreting" the "song" thank fucking God, and it's kind of cute.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard it this morning as well (KEXP?). I'm not sure who's doing the female vocals, but the way she pronounces some of the lyrics made my skin crawl.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't mind Sarah McLachlan's cover of it, but I can't see what Tricky could possibly bring to the table on this particular song. He should do "Radios in Motion" or "Travels in Nihilon" or something.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

(It could have very well been the hazy nervous state i was in... my clock radio awoken me to that song. i probably should give the track another shot in a more expected setting, like on headphones or a stereo.)

Tricky apologists amuse the hell out of me.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

And claiming you'd listen to him mutter from the phonebook is no excuse cuz you had a copy of that by 1999.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

?

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, just laughing at the claim "what's to dislike?"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"what's to dislike" only equals "apologist" in whatever hallucinatory state you're residing in, Anthony. "this isn't offensive" equals "whatever he does is great"? get over yourself, moron

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

it's kind of cute.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

that's one song. not everything he's ever done. so what exactly is your point?

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Scariest thread title in eons. Ordinarily I love Tricky, but Dear God didn't need help.

Damn.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

you're kind of cute when you get everything completely wrong yourself, there, sailor

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

forgive me. I thought your inability to find something to dislike on the Tin Machine album meant you were one of them crazy Bowie fans.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

though this ain't tin machine. it's Pin Ups

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

another case of father not like son.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

also, four years of Matos throwing brickbats at Tricky albums in print to thread.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

haha if I was really in space I'd probably like Discovery a lot more. I'm glad to hear about those brickbats. If you had an archive online I might have known!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

wannabe rock critics with chips on their shoulders amuse the hell out of me

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, can we just talk about the idea of Andy Partridge covering "Tricky Kid" instead?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir to thread!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

also, does that mean you're gonna be publishing Jess's Outkast review?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

what the fuck does that have to do with anything? oh wait, you're Anthony Miccio. nevermind.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

you said wannabe rock critics with chips on their shoulders amuse the hell out of me , remember?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

oh. I don't really consider him a "wannabe" at this point, though, because he's doing it a lot. so are you, I suppose. nevermind, then.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread made me download Sarah McLachlan's cover.
Sarah McLachlan has made me regret ever opening this thread.
