If i do not own any Fahey material is the compilation, Return of the Repressed Anthology something I should pick up? or is there one album that i should get first?

Return of the Repressed is by far the best place to start. Past that, can't go wrong with Blind Joe Death, or whatever Takoma's calling his first album these days. Mid-period-wise, I'm partial to Days Have Gone By. Post comeback, I'd say City of Refuge (if you can find it), or maybe Red Cross. Have fun.

it seems to balance the floaty improv-lite stuff with the more trad stuff well.

The Best of 1959-72 is great, imo. This one has a similar (longer) tracklist although misses ...Dyke Brigade & Spanish Dance, which are personal faves.

Another thumbs up for Return Of The Repressed.

If you like that my suggestion for your next purchase would be Rhino's equally good Leo Kottke Anthology.

I like Requia, from 1967 -- a combination of his waterfall acoustic guitar and sheets of clanging, banging noise illustrating Fahey's fear of driving. Really!

Either Return of the Repressed or the Takoma best of are great places to start... I've eventually settled on the 2for CD that has both versions of Death Chants, Breakdowns and Military Waltzes as my favorite Fahey album.

favorite fahey album = days have gone by. and i reckon it's a pretty good place to start. get a little drunk and bitter on whiskey, then listen to it.

Definitely start with Return of the Repressed, you can't go wrong. It was the first Fahey I heard, and many years on I own just about all of his albums (with the exception of a couple of the 90s ones). But I've still kept a copy of Return of the Repressed, even though I could just sell it at this point. It sort of has sentimental value, I used to play it so much. I just love the way it flows; if I was to make my own comp it would probably be very similar.

And the liner notes (lots of quotes from John about the various tracks) are great.
