I am loving these 3 Viking Crown releases, but am unsure which subgenre of exteme metal they sit in.

Anyone reccomend anything similar?

it is the black metal.

since viking crown is basically phil 'anson crowley' anselmo's love poem to early norge black metal, dig up some early darkthrone (under a funeral moon/transilvanian hunger), emperor (wrath of the tyrant/in the nightside eclipse), burzum, etc.

necrofrost's "bloodstorm voktes over hytrungas' dunkle necrotroner" might do if you're looking for more raw, simplistic black metal or if you're after the blend of synthesized mood pieces with it...maybe veles' "black hateful metal."

Indeed, it's black metal you're after.

Enslaved "Vikingligr Veldi"
Emperor "In The Nightside Eclipse"
Darkthrone "Transilvanian Hunger"
Gorgoroth "Under The Sign Of Hell"
Burzum "Hvit Lyset Tar Oss"
Mayhem "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas"
Graveland "The Celtic Winter"
Taake "Nattestid (Ser Porten Vid)"

Yeah but what the hell HAPPENED to Gorgoroth? They seem to phone in their stuff now.

I like the new record. It's in my Top Ten for this year, actually.

The most frustrating thing about Gorgoroth is that since they're on a big label they release piss-poor albums with ONE fantastic track that keeps your hopes up. A track like "En Eim Av Blod Og Helvetesil" still kicks my ass all across the room, for example. Haven't heard the new one yet though.

"Under The Sign Of Hell" is beyond criticism though. It's the most in-your-face album EVER, listening is like being on the receiving end of a severe beating.
