Mathematically speaking, what would this band sound like? (Don't forget to carry the '!!!')

Like a 17 year old who sounds like the Velvet Underground.

It would have a good beat and you could dance to it.

Fusing funk, rock, and twee cabaret pop, the sound of the Hot Hot Flowerhouse Yeah Yeahs!!! has as much lopsided symmetry as their name. The band is the brainchild of Brian McDougal, who spent his childhood in Glasgow alternating Sly Stone and Anthony Newly on his small turntable. With bandmates and school chums Willie McRath and Merlyn Stoddard, the Hot Hot Flowerhouse Yeah Yeahs!!! have crafted a fine, goofy, and meticluous debut album, Meandering Off the Stage. The three core members are joined by horns, hoardes of synthesizers, batallions of drums, and McDougal's simpering whine of a voice to create a dizzying weave of post-war musical pastiche that, at only 33 minutes, leaves you wanting more if only to make sense of it. A truly odd, and oddly promising, debut album.

(four stars)

There would be balloons on the CD cover.

Also: The Avalanches go klezmer.

The Polyphonic Spree get funky.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 06:06 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, Kenan gets an A+, but jaymc's blurb gows on every fucking copy of the cd itself. I kiss you both.
