La Kylie's New Single "Slow"

The rear of the year's new single is fair to middling IMHO. I certainly can get it out of my head, unlike another song of her's.

mentalist (mentalist), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

one of her worst, fer sure. is this the death knell for the electro revival?

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

It sounds so much like a gene-splice of the Britney singles Slave and Boys that it's not even funny.

M Carty (mj_c), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 08:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I quite like it - as opposed to the clip. It's not funny, it's darksexeepop.

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's terrific!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

isn't it a bit like her single 'Breathe' from a few years back?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

it is, how you say it..a real grower. also, watch the video and the full impact of the song will be revealed.

however, the "hear my..bodylanguage" bit is just wrong!

lid, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

*parp*

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I also like it because it is called "Slow" and it is slow. This is the sort of plain-spoken titling pop needs.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh, i mean what the hell does 'Flip Reverse' mean?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish she'd covered My Bloody Valentine's song of the same name, but in the style she's done this song. Now that would have been interesting.

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

it's ok i guess

duane, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I like it, especially how the drums drop out for the chorus. It's not as good as the new Holly Valance though.

Nick H, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Kylie is just beautiful, man. Forget Madonna and Mariah Carey and Shania Twain and Whitney Houston and all that, Kylie's the REAL queen of pop. She should be more popular over here than she is.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I still don't see what's so cool about her ass, though.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's a corker of a record - sounds like it's taken a lot of cues from minimal german micro gear like reinhard voight etc. she sounds great on it, too, and is cute as a button.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

also anyone noticed how rachel stevens' "my la ex" is totally on a kompakty, schaffel tip?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Absolutely! I said as much at the last focus group. I can't believe anyone else hasn't picked up on it yet.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's the best thing she's ever done, and really elevates her above her peers. I think Emiliana Torrini is one of the producers on Slow. I mean, I assume it's the same woman.

17 November!

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Woops, I just listened to Slow, and it’s not "hear my body language". It's "read my body language". Still… I don’t like that bit.

It is a very sexy song. Good to writhe along to (like in the vid).

lid, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Not much of a song, but I like the backing track. I only hope that soon somebody is going to combine that brilliant early 80s-influenced synth sound with a decent melody as well.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I still don't see what's so cool about her ass, though.

Mister, if you have to ask...

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The vid is a little dull but so is the song... and there is somethind very britney about those childish vox right at the end.

doesn't really kick it.

dsico (dsico), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Fantastic tune indeed. Everything Madonna wishes for, really.

Geir, you need "Silver Surfer" by Hardy Hard, preferably the original version.

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there a link to it, anywhere?

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I still don't see what's so cool about her ass, though.

Neither do I, it's HOT

mentalist (mentalist), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

a resounding DUD.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like the french siren hair she's got on the cover of the album.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah but those nice big teeth are the same. GOT TO HAVE TEEF, BABY!!! IT JUST WOULDN'T LOOK RIGHT!!

DarrensCoq, Thursday, 30 October 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Fantastic tune indeed

The tune is not, no.

I see nothing fantastic about repeating the same few notes over and over repetitively with the same chord playing all the time in the bottom.

Shame, with synth sounds like those, it could have been so great with a better melody.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Two album tracks, "Red Blooded Woman" and "Secret (Take You Home) have leaked, people!

"Secret" I think is the one written by Ms Dynamite, and is in a similar vein to "Slow" - probably a bit more melodic, has some great "yeah"s, a sort of rap in the middle that is a bit Shaznay and quite adorable with it, and is generally very good stuff indeed.

"Red Blooded Woman" is slow, has nice stabs at the start, is not dissimilar to "Fever" (the song, not the album) - if only in the vocals, although it's not very dancey at all - maybe Kylie has actually been influenced by hip-hop after all!

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 30 October 2003 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

ehhhhhh ok admittedly it sounds better on my headphones than coming out of the tv, but still. she sings like an eight year old doing an impression of Madonna, with a repertoire of ersatz erotic poses that signify 'sexy' without actually being it. the track is ok, if a bit slight, but she ruins it for me. now if you wanna talk sexy Kylie, there's always the Fischerspooner rmx of "Come Into My World"...

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 30 October 2003 07:12 (twenty-two years ago)

When is Ms Dynamite going to stop twatting around and make a proper garage record?

Nick H, Thursday, 30 October 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh i'd like a new 'Booo!'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 30 October 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"I see nothing fantastic about repeating the same few notes over and over repetitively with the same chord playing all the time in the bottom."

I do. Her best single since "Some kind of bliss"

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 31 October 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

There was the rumour that she was going to a whole garage LP, with the working title "A Little Darker", but that was before the baby I think and I've heard nothing since. Shame, because she can fucking tear it up something baaaaad.

Nick H, Friday, 31 October 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

So I heard a bit of the Chemical Brothers remix of slow, like a mere 12 seocnd mp3 snippet. Anyone heard or have access to the full version?

mentalist (mentalist), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually really like this record in terms of Microhouse seeping into the mainstream. The SYNTH CITY remix additionally brings out certain digital-snares ala 'Glowing Glisses - On the Bridge (Rene Breitbarth Mix)' track on Smallville; making a good case for a massive chart-pop crossover with micro-styled production...

That would be something quite spectacular.

Michael Dieter, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

We find ourselves sneakily quite liking the backing track. But the vocals are wrong, wrong, wrong. It requires either robots a la Kraftwerk, or hystrionic soul a la Yazoo. Kylie sort of simpering along just doesn't work at all.

Her Royal Highness Queen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

why do ppl want kylie to be 'sexy': she sounds pretty 'cold' and that suits the track.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

She doesn't sound cold. She sounds BORED. And not in a good way.

Her Royal Highness Queen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

cold as in maybe uninterested, maybe leading to bored...

how does one sound bored in a good way?

and sounding bored on record is a triffic idea.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Kompakt should trump DJ Hell and release this on KOM POP with remixes by Michael Mayer and Reinhart Voigt.

Maybe...

Michael Dieter, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

hey kids have you seen who is on the front cover of the NME this week:
http://microsites.nme.com/thisweek/

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

It's OK, I s'pose... maybe it hasn't grown on me enough yet, but it's no 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head'.

It doesn't help that Holly Valance's new song has trumped it quite spectacularly in terms of belated electro bandwagon-jumping.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure if it's a great pop single, but it's sexy as hell, so on that alone: classic.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus it's pretty impossible to listen to without thinking of the Kraftwerk section in Words & Music.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

this is perfect to boot with light your ass on fire btw

crack, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I still don't see what's so cool about her ass, though.

Like you wouldn't like to give it a spank.

Miggie (Miggie), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

And the song? It's okay, I think. I like the beat and the vibe, but I'm not convinced by Kylie's voice here. I guess it could sound way better if remixed.

(and if you haven't heard the song yet, you can download it here)

Miggie (Miggie), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The voice is too Britney. Like the track, though.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought this. So, I guess that means I like it, I've been wrong so many times before.

Nah, I'm just fooling. It would be a great instrumental, or at the very bleedingleast had some competent mixing to take the blunt edge off Kylie's voice.

Where can I buy the Chemical remix? It's building up buzz like the negative Come With Us reviews nevah happened.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
kylie's "closer" is orgasmic

mr minogue, Friday, 28 January 2005 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

This is true. I just spent ten minutes rummaging through 7"s & cassingles trying to remember what it was b-side of. See also: "Jus' Wanna Love You".

three years pass...

I like to think that with Tricky covering (but not improving upon) this, it gets its due as one of the brilliant overlook singles of the decade (not that Tricky seems to matter in this decade, anyhow)

it's v sexy and stupid and sticky

upthread all the time of "Ms. Dynamite" - hawha

Vichitravirya_XI, Sunday, 28 September 2008 22:35 (seventeen years ago)

Boring and tuneless in 2003, still boring and tuneless in 2008.

It's 10.00 and I'm Huw Edwards. I don't write this stuff. (Marcello Carlin), Monday, 29 September 2008 15:20 (seventeen years ago)

I like this song quite a bit, there's a real tension to it which is only briefly released when a chord change finally comes in the middle eight. I also like how it's not actually particularly slow.

chap, Monday, 29 September 2008 15:36 (seventeen years ago)

This has aged much better than Can't Get You Out Of My Head, which I never want or need to hear again.

Matt DC, Monday, 29 September 2008 15:48 (seventeen years ago)

It's cheesiness is going to age better than half of, say, Goldfrapp's similar cheesiness. There's none of Allison's desperation

Minimalism has never sounded sexier

Two worst posts in history of ILM there

Haha. Do you prefer Can't Get You Out of My Head, or do you just hate pop music ?

Vichitravirya_XI, Monday, 29 September 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

And why is CGYOOMH really considered superior to this?

Vichitravirya_XI, Monday, 29 September 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, and I love pop music, which "Slow" isn't.

I'll talk about why when Tom gets to either/both on Popular.

It's 10.00 and I'm Huw Edwards. I don't write this stuff. (Marcello Carlin), Monday, 29 September 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

I love how this thread is all people going "is this it for the electro bandwagon?" which five years on is still rolling.

Matt DC, Monday, 29 September 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

altho surely now it's all 4/4/housey and not as Actual Electro beat-wise

I've just listened to it again for the first time in years and I'm kind of surprised at how warm and full the sound is. Okay maybe not in relation to any other Kylie single, but five years of minimal house in between had filed the version in my head down to one ultra-dry clicky minimal hook with Kylie going all breathy over the top, and it isn't really that at all.

Matt DC, Monday, 29 September 2008 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

haha! i have better taste in music now than i did then

lex pretend, Monday, 29 September 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

This became the default "sexxxiness is going to happen" song somehow.. it deserves it though

Tracer Hand, Monday, 29 September 2008 23:43 (seventeen years ago)

You people have weird ideas of sexiness. "Slow" is about as sexy as Andy Fordham's underpants, and arguably less tuneful.

I imagine this is what it would feel like walking into the Tory Party Conference.

It's 10.00 and I'm Huw Edwards. I don't write this stuff. (Marcello Carlin), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 08:53 (seventeen years ago)

I don't remember how this song goes. And I have just remembered that youtube is not working properly for me, so perhaps I will continue not to know. I imagine that the record is not great but she looked fabulous in the video. That seems a reliable guess.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 08:54 (seventeen years ago)

"Slow" isn't much of a song, but it is one of those rare cases where it still works because the backing track is so marvellous.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 09:07 (seventeen years ago)

That's because there isn't a song in it (xp).

I would expect that the video is a major factor in this rotten record's unwarranted reappraisal.

It's 10.00 and I'm Huw Edwards. I don't write this stuff. (Marcello Carlin), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 09:08 (seventeen years ago)

Not in my case! I only first saw that silly video yesterday. The Tricky cover is what reminded me of this song - and its sexy greatness

Vichitravirya_XI, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 09:40 (seventeen years ago)

I've never seen the video.

I like "Slow" but couldn't imagine thinking it was best Kylie ever. More like:

1) Love At First Sight
2) Spinning Around (live version based on Cece Peniston's "Finally" - the original is dire)
3) Better The Devil You Know
4) Can't Get You Out Of My Head
5) Shocked
6) Put Yourself In My Place
7) Love Affair
8) Confide In Me
9) I Believe In You
10) The One
11) Slow
12) Your Disco Needs You

Tim F, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 10:45 (seventeen years ago)

i'm more shocked you think the original 'spinning around' is dire! it's not more than ok though. 'i believe in you' and the fischerspooner rmx of 'come into my world' are the only ones which come close to 'slow' for me

lex pretend, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 10:48 (seventeen years ago)

I just don't think Kylie does "sexy" very well. It's not really her thing.

It's 10.00 and I'm Huw Edwards. I don't write this stuff. (Marcello Carlin), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 11:09 (seventeen years ago)

I like "Chocolate," too. What do you think of that, Tim, and what abt the new album?

Vichitravirya_XI, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 14:01 (seventeen years ago)

That's true but the percussion bits make it fast - like it can't make up its mind whether it's in 4/4 or 2/2 time. Then when the percussion bits fall away in the chorus, at the exact moment she says "slow.." it drops back to half speed. It's clever and pretty effective at getting across the whole changing speeds thing involved in, er, sex.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 14:05 (seventeen years ago)

I think "Chocolate" is great too but there's probably about thirty or so Kylie songs I'd describe as "great".
