C90: 80s Metal Songs To School A Darkness Fan

The only way for me to find out whether the metal-veteran Darkness-haters are bitter or right (or a bit of both) is to actually listen to some 80s metal. I'm not going to say here what I have or haven't heard, I just want individual tracks which I, as someone who likes the Darkness, will like even more. I will download anything that sounds good (probably when I get back from honeymoon but hey, I'll bookmark this).

Here's why I like The Darkness: their hooks, their enthusiasm, their showmanship, their audacity. So those are the sort of qualities I'd be looking for in the stuff they've apparently ripped off.

My ears are open - let's go!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I stress: individual tracks NOT albums. And I'll ignore massive lists in single posts for downloading purposes - I'm not made of time!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Woohoo! Maura to thread STAT!

Dan will protest, but I have to start with Poison's "Don't Want Nothing but a Good Time" and "Talk Dirty to Me" (and "Cry Tough" for *that* Phil Spector drum beat).

In lieu of nominating the entire Pretty Boy Floyd album, "Rock 'n' Roll is Gonna Set the Night on Fire" and "Rock and Roll Outlaws" ('the mascara masquerade...rebels and renegades!').

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Tygers of Pan Tang - Don't Touch Me There

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, Dan noted that the Darkness's music reminded him of Queensryche, which means that Tico must secretly love Seattle-based prog-metal. Try "I Don't Believe In Love," which you will almost certainly hate.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Kiss - Crazy Crazy Nights

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"Heaven's On Fire" by KISS as well, actually.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Guns'N'Roses - Rocket Queen

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Warrant - Cherry Pie

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Motley Crue - "Red Hot," "Bastard," "Ten Seconds To Love."

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I could make you a CD-r if you want Tico?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

More Motley: "Home Sweet Home," "Too Fast for Love," "Toast of the Town" (which Pretty Boy Floyd covered!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Journey - Any Way You Want It (serious!)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

That would be great Jel!

I am downloading "Rock'n'Roll Outlaws", that one sounds good.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Skid Row - Big Guns

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Journey - Any Way You Want It (serious!)

WITHOUT QUESTION. As I mentioned elsewhere, this also trumps Andrew WK and the Electric Six COMPLETELY.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

yay! I shall do so!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

finally, download:

Alice Cooper - Teenage Lament '74, not coz it's much like the Darkness, but just one of the greatest songs ever.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

There seems to be big queues on Soulseek for most of this stuff :( A pity as I was hoping for a bit of rock to take on holiday with me.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway You Want It!? Gimme a break. "Party Hard" runs circles around Journey's crap single any day of the week.

You don't party much, do you?

ddrake, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I assume from your question that you party even less.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Diamond Head - "Am I Evil?"
Hanoi Rocks - "Tragedy"

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Just thought:

WHITESNAKE - SLIDE IT IN

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Please flush Poison down the drain and go instead for the sublimely ridiculous Cinderella! "Nobody's Fool" would be a good place to start.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Van Halen - "Runaround"
Def Leppard - "Pour Some Sugar On Me"
Whitesnake - "Here I Go Again"
Bon Jovi - "Bad Medicine"
Scorpions - "Hit Between The Eyes" (a personal favorite).

Miggie (Miggie), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

That actually would be a good Cinderella song, but no flushing Poison, now. Oh yes, avoid WASP completely. The Scorps, of course! "Rock You Like a Hurricane"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills"
Motorhead - "Stay Clean", "Ace of Spades" (alt, just buy cheap motorhead compo on castle records - "welcome to the bear pit?"
OZZY!@# blizzard of ozz - "Mr Crowley", Diary of a Madman"

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm tempted to just list everything on the _Powerslave_ album.

Where are the Winger/Night Ranger/Nelson/etc apologists?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Taken care of, chief.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

And most of that kind of power balladry was the studied crap complained about on the 'pop ballad' thread, "Headed for a Heartbreak," please. "Sister Christian" mostly survives thanks to that use in Boogie Nights.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Detroit Girls-Starz
Raise A Little Hell-Trooper

except they are from the 70's and they aren't really metal.
the first starz album is better all around than the darkness album.
am i a darkness hater? hmmm..they can't play that well, the songs aren't that great, and the singer is kinda weak, but other than that i like them okay. they remind me of the 70's-not the 80's.

scott seward, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Winger - Miles Away
Junkyard - Slipping Away
Bon Jovi - Blood on Blood

Personally, I wouldn't say Maiden have much in common with the attitude of Darkness style rock.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh man....

"Slow'n'Easy" by Whitesnake
"See You in Hell" by Grim Reaper
"Two Minutes to Midnight" by Iron Maiden
"ROCK YOU" by Helix

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Why bother with the Darkness? They're as redundant as the Strokes.

James

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Thursday, 30 October 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Quiet Riot - CUM ON FEEL THE NOIZE

btw, the Darkness rock. Eat it sissy.

calstars (calstars), Thursday, 30 October 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd rather eat it manly.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 October 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Iron Maiden pre-Dickenson: "Runnin' Free"
Iron Maiden with Dickenson: "Run to the Hills"
and of course B.D.'s amazing solo track, "The Tower"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 30 October 2003 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i gotta listen to the darkness again, cuz i don't get any iron maiden vibe from them. maybe angel. or angel city. or the babies. or silverhead. or maybe i just don't remember what the hell it sounds like. i better shut up until i listen again.

scott seward, Thursday, 30 October 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup, the darkness are the perfect example of masculine (read: repressed homosexual) rock.

mei (mei), Thursday, 30 October 2003 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Manowar - Carry On
Judas Priest - United

dog latin, Thursday, 30 October 2003 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The only Darkness song I've heard ("Growing On me") sounded to me like a glam metal take on Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl."

Maybe Def Leppard's "Armaggedon It" or Queensrÿche's "Jet City Woman" (technically not 80s metal).

Jeremy (Jeremy), Thursday, 30 October 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The Bruce Dickinson solo track should be "Dive Dive Dive".

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Search out Raven - Don't need your money, the template for most of the Darkness's career.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup, the darkness are the perfect example of masculine (read: repressed homosexual) rock.

So what?

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I was listening to the Darkness DJ on XFM a while ago and they got to play some of their favourite music. At the time I was still of the belief that the whole Darkness thing was a joke or a scam, and I didn't pay much attention, but this is what I could remember them playing:

Whitesnake - Here I Go Again
Def Leppard - Photograph (one of my all-time fave songs from ANY genre, actually)
Prince - Beautiful Ones, I think...
Van Halen - Panama
KISS, Motley Crue (can't remember the songs)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Twisted Sister-"We're not gonna take it"
Satanicide-"We rock"
Judas Priest-"Sinner"

Michael B, Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 30 October 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i always thought cheap trick were a pretty obvious darkness influence (say, "he's a whore"), more than ac/dc for example. also, when i was seventeen on a late-night japanese music vid show i saw a song called "nobody rides for free" by, i think, kix. can anyone confirm this? i thought it was pretty cool. i mean, i still remember it after one hearing/viewing from 16 years ago. also also, does anybody know/remember a band called seduce? were they any good?

cameron, Thursday, 30 October 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)
