dave q, Thursday, 30 October 2003 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously. Before wasting any more seconds of listening or downloading or even (god forbid) money, get 'Generation Terrorists' or 'Electric' or 'Saturation' or 'Pyromania' or 'Crazy World' or 'Blackout' or 'Stained Class' or 'Get Lucky' or 'Obsession' if you're into 'fake metal', or even (even!) anything by Anvil or Thunder or the Almighty or Loudness or Kik Tracee or Danger Danger or Tuff or Pretty Boy Floyd or any shit you can imagine! This is more London-biz charlatanry, think Menswear or something, they're just the autumn Libertines!

dave q, Thursday, 30 October 2003 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

its hilarious that The Darkness are always being written off by this board as a "London biz" construction when the "London biz" were laughing so hard at The Darkness until they started actually shifting units.

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"Knock 'em down then build 'em up", same rancid formula tho

dave q, Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a terrible piece of writing. I lived with 'Generation Terrorists' and the reviewer is talking out of his arse. As for prescriptions like 'never stretch the word fuck ovewr two syllables' -- fu-uck off mate! Who made this guy Emperor of Words? And he obv. doesn't think rawk for girls is an okay thing. I wouldn't counterpose 'charlatanry' and the Manics!

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

What, you don't like the gtr solo in "Slash and Burn"? The ascending bit at the end is almost as good as Slash! And the riffs in the mid-section of "Condemned to Rock and Roll"!!!

dave q, Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Possibly, but most of that album is not hot; I'm not really a solo afficionado (like, I shd think, most Darkness fans). I'm with Tico, I think it's very funny watching metallers get narked about ppl like me enjoying it on our own terms.

The Darkness are a pop band who use the language of metal, perhaps?

I don't understand reviews that lay down the law on the correct way to sing 'fuck' -- is this a new critical method?

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

haha its a fanstastic critical method enrique.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

also I really liked yr muse review dave.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The Emperor of Words is of course Sammy "Only time will tell if we stand the test of time" Hagar! (Re 'language of metal', in the Darkness' case that's like saying everything in a 'greasy-a wop-a accent-a' and saying you're using the sound of Italian!)

dave q, Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

dave q @ Stylus is my gift to the world.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh fuck, Dave didn't identify himself, I wouldn't have been so rude if I'd known it were him.

they probably have girlfriends at home named Kate or Zoe who got them on all those magazine covers in the first place

I'm trying to think of Real Bands who don't Play the Game here, or have like middle class named girlfriends... um?

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

dave: name me one good mmetal band from saudi arabia?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

dave q,

that review rocked so hard. i feel like i've just listened to ac/dc. the darkness must go away, obviously.

sonny.

cool kid of death, Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Enrique - the bands with stripper-named girlfriends of course! (re 'rudeness' no worries - in fact, one blunt post is more 'rawk' than the whole of 'PTL', so how could I possibly object?)

dave q, Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

dave q,

i've been forwarding that review all morning. it's the equivalent of ian astbury's BABY BABY BABYs on electric.

nick, what's it like having to speak out of your arse all the time? must get difficult and sad.

sonny

cool kid of death, Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the thing -- the stripper-named girlfriend chic stuff... I came at the Manics from the St Etienne-liking, MM-reading angle, and though one of my very best friends listens to nothing but metal (and like, The Misfits), none of that stuff is really up my alley. Proof that Der Darkness are for chicks: my g/f bought it (from Sainsbury's hah!), not me. I think this is rock behaviour, personally.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio - umm, well there was that rap-metal number "Funky Cold Medina"

dave q, Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, seeing as I commissioned the review, sent Dave the CD, and approached him about writing for Stylus in the first place, I don't think I am.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, seeing as I commissioned the review, sent Dave the CD, and approached him about writing for Stylus in the first place, I don't think I am.

Huh? Sad guy. Is there a charity set up where you can go and get help?

cool kid of death, Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Umm people thanx for the props but pls stop fighting pls! Unless its directed at me then that's fine.
Re stripper names - see what's amazing about those is that in the past ppl with regular names used to CHANGE them to things like Krysti and Elyxette, THEN go out with Nikki Sixx or whoever. But now I'm finding that (at least in the part of the world I'm native to) people are now being given these names AT BIRTH. Perhaps this is significant in some disturbing way, or not.

dave q, Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Where dyou live? Ish?

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

having grown up in small-town rural north america - i have to admit - dave q is spot on with stripper girlfriends analogies.

cool kid of death, Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Enrique - in London currently, but I'm talkin' the deep rural southeast of British Columbia is where I'm from

dave q, Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

it's obvious that small town pregnant teens are harvesting the next breed of stripper girlfriends for metal bands!!!

cool kid of death, Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you insane, Sonny?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

This all todally passed me by, far as I can tell ALL Brit metallers have a smirk on their face, in me experience, I cd be wrong (bear in mind I'm about the same age as the Darkness, 23), but in the Nineties it was like liking 'gangsta rap' -- ie virtually none of the fans had any genuine connection with 'the life' in the songs. Correct me if I'm wrong of course.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Watching Justin being carried around the audience on the shoulders of a big roadie, soloing all the way = classic. The records I can live without though.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

ALL Brit metallers have a smirk on their face, in me experience

enrique, go to a rural town where some of these metallers are trying to get famous. no smirk to be found!!! dave q you should star in the next decline and fall of western civilisation. what happened to 'logan' - that one band, where the senior and the stripper were chanting their name. the query being - does dave q find these metal bands truly good and interesting or ironic?

insane? it's called being interesting, nick. something you won't know anything about, obviously. but that is 'o.k.'

cool kid of death, Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

'this is rawk for girls of both sexes' made me larf nonstop

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

You torture wasps, don't you? I've been accused of lots of things, but never "not being interesting".

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

You torture wasps, don't you? I've been accused of lots of things, but never "not being interesting".

White American Surburban People? - the fact that you felt the need to quantify/qualify what i said - ends the argument for me.

cool kid of death, Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Just as well, cos I have no idea what the fuck you're on about.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

that's fu-uck from now on, obv.

willem (willem), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

enrique, go to a rural town where some of these metallers are trying to get famous. no smirk to be found

A small town like Lowestoft? I'm talking UK here. I've never met a person who really really took metal (or 'gangsta rap') seriously.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Definitely!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I know plenty of people who take gangsta rap seriosuly, but they're all 17.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

'I'm talking UK here. I've never met a person who really really took metal seriously'

The members of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Whitesnake etc might disagree!

dave q, Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I've met way too many people who take metal seriously.

(ps Nick - yer lack of imagination bogs you down - that's 'o.k'

cool kid of death, Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

(not saying JP records didn't have a huge comedy campness quotient but there was at least a bit of effort made to simulate some 'seriousness' to OFFSET the camp thus making it even more blatant! Conceptual dynamics!)

dave q, Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

whenever ian astbury talks to me about metal and RAAAAAAAAAAWWWK its v v serious.

cool kid of death, Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

and in small towns - it's like a cult. still. though i don't know how much grunge filtered in like cheap heroin but still ...

every metal guy belong in a 'say you love satan' band or gang.

cool kid of death, Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

The members of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Whitesnake etc might disagree!

I've never met these people, but also that wave of metal was what? 20 years ago? I'm talking pop fans (= teenagers, primarily) in the nineties/nowties.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

If they think they're laughing at metal then fine, great! But to laugh at a crappy stuck-together version and then THINK you're laughing at metal is something different altogether! Like misogynists who base all their sexist stereotypes on a really poor drag act they saw once, and actually believe them!

dave q, Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Like, I saw a video of the Almighty once and I bust a gut, you never saw anything so ridiculous! I laughed in a 'cruel' way too, it was pure unintentional hilarity, I couldn't believe it. But when stuff like that exists who needs the fuckin' Darkness? It's like watching a parody of a parody of 'Spaceballs' and then saying 'Star Wars is ridiculous, admit it'. The process is so fucked that it makes the tenability of the conclusion irrelevant!

dave q, Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

No, no -- I'm not laughing at the Darkness!! (Well, maybe the videos.) Whereas I would laugh at Judas Priest!! I don't make the rules, but that's how it is.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 30 October 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

You don't make the rules as to whom 'you' laugh at?

dave q, Thursday, 30 October 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Nope, that's the thing about unfiltered reactions to things.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 30 October 2003 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

(Like, if you find JP so hilarious, tell me - what's their funniest lyric? Which gtr solo of theirs is the most innapropriate to the song? Whatever you could come up I could come up with ten more, but are you saying it's 'funny cus it just is'? But what is 'it'? Would you think "You Got Another Thing Comin'" was a 'funny title' if it was an R&B record with a chick singing? Sounds like a Beyonce single!)

dave q, Thursday, 30 October 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"i WOULD laugh at Judas Priest"[caps mine obv] - that's not depending on 'unfiltered reactions', that's filtering them by deciding what they're going to be before you even have them!

dave q, Thursday, 30 October 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

That may be important but it doesn't seem like you're actually praising the music so much as its context -- and THAT may be important too.

Ned, it is important. There's a whole 10 years generation out there who don't know nuffink about guitar solos, falsetto screams, long hair etc. All they have is over grown teenage men in baggy pants whining about how their parents never gave them enough money, or whatever.
If all you expect is a stylistic anachronism from the Darkness, then you are missing the point. All you are doing is laughing at the cheesiness of it all, as if the whole thing's a pantomime, and I personally believe there's more to the Darkness than that. Sure, there's a little irony, but as another thread said - every band is a comedy band. From the early nineties onward, we have been used to taking our music so seriously. Can you imagine "groove is in the heart" or "tricky disco" getting in the charts now? no because they take the piss too much - they aren't proper, even for pop. but they are still good fun songs. same as the darkness's output. the whole album (apart from friday night, and the last track) is rock'n'roll indulgence at it's best. maybe not metal, but certainly a lot of fun.

I draw parallels with hiphop here. Nu-Metal = the dark days of hiphop in the mid nineties. It looks like the Darkness may be the ignition toward something newer and better, so long as we don't get tons of Darkness rip-off bands, which would be, admittedly tedious.

Metal is about escapism - does it really matter about where you're from? As far as anyone's concerned, the darkness could be from the planet Rockon. Whether they come from London or not I don't care, they can't help that.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 30 October 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

One fact that The Darkness is reminding me of is that the vast majority of metal is really, really wimpy. (This is not a value judgement.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 30 October 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

One fact that The Darkness is reminding me of is that the vast majority of metal is really, really wimpy. (This is not a value judgement.)

agreed. the marvellous 'friday night' always made me think that the Hawkins brothers might probably more at home practicing their guitar poses or playing dungeons & dragons than scoring supermodels at aftershows or some such; more Brian May than Tommy Lee.

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 30 October 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Not knowing about guitars = good for yer appreciation of music

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 30 October 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

How?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 30 October 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

So you can avoid the rhetoric and realize that GNMFR and Nirvana aren't that different.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 30 October 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

That is extraordinarily ignorant.

The songwriting, particularly with respect to chord progressions and riffs, is MUCH more complicated with GNR than it is for Nirvana. Also, Kurt's guitar effects are much messier and less crisp than Slash's guitar effects AND point me at the Nirvana song that contains a guitar solo with a note duration shorter than an eighth note.

You might as well say "Well, Palestrina and Webern aren't that different," or "Scooter and Plastikman aren't that different." All you're doing is showing off your ignorance/inability to distinguish one sound from another.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 30 October 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

It is ignorant, totally, if someone spoke about music I liked in that way it would piss me off.
What I'm trying to do is explain why ppl like the Darkness -- ppl who don't give a crap about metal heritage, and really aren't fussed about solos, falsity or otherwise, fx, etc

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 30 October 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never owned a guitar in my life. I do, however, have a roughly functioning set of ears.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 30 October 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Mohammed Atta OTM.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 30 October 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I assume you're talking about Jess, and not that bloke who crashed a plane into the World Trade Centre.

I can't be bothered to read this thread in its entirety. Is it as good as the one we hijacked with Techno Roy Keane impressions?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I did write Atta, didn't I? Dangsies.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

sadly not, matt.

anyway, i have thus returned to my true self, to get the c.i.a. off my back.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

What I'm trying to do is explain why ppl like the Darkness -- ppl who don't give a crap about metal heritage, and really aren't fussed about solos, falsity or otherwise, fx, etc

ironically, much of The Darkness's first huge groundswell of support came from their gigs supporting Def Leppard earlier this year, people who do have metal heritage...

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

What I'm trying to do is explain why ppl like the Darkness -- ppl who don't give a crap about metal heritage, and really aren't fussed about solos, falsity or otherwise, fx, etc

Oh please. We KNOW why, Tico said as much on his cassette thread! He likes the showmanship, the audacity, the tunes, etc. Some of us are coming along and saying, in various ways and means, "You know, here's a bunch of other stuff like them that they obviously like in turn which you might like as well," and you're doing your damnedest to avoid the obvious conclusion that if something gives you joy something else along the same lines might also give you joy. Which makes sense if you're a Puritan, but I rather hope you're not.

Xpost with Stevie just now! For fuck's sake, I said on the other thread that if you liked the Darkness you might well LURV Def Leppard. So get off yer damned high horse and download "Photograph" or "Pour Some Sugar on Me" or "Hysteria" or "Rocket." You might find you actually like the fucking things! And if you hate 'em and prefer the Darkness, that's cool too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, i loved Def Leppard; they're recent stuff has been draedful though. and i loved Queen, too, but The Miracle was the last album they made that had anything i even vaguely loved. for me, The Darkness tickle the spots those bands used to reach.

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Stevie, I apologize -- I was addressing Enrique, not you!

There's a whole 10 years generation out there who don't know nuffink about guitar solos, falsetto screams, long hair etc.

So Dog Latin, you're saying that an entire generation down to the last person never watches 'where are they now?' programs, never hears oldies radio, doesn't stumble across websites, have no older brothers and sisters with old videotapes of things, etc. This makes about as much sense as me getting into music in the eighties and somehow never hearing about Led Zeppelin or make-up era Kiss.

I understand the rhetorical point you're trying to make and why you're making it, and I see your [and Tom's and Enrique's] huge 'you can't be RATIONAL about it' argument. But jeez louise, the amount of po-faced argument y'all are making *in support* of the Darkness is really head-scratching.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

And actually, come to think about it, let me refer to the Iron Maiden show I saw a couple of months back where a huge swath of the crowd was high school/early twenties age. This is not an audience -- in the States, at least! -- that doesn't know guitar solos etc. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, the idea that teenage kids are no long listening to "real" metal is one of the music press's biggest fallacies. as any trip to a small town in the u.s. will teach you.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I think there's an assumption that there's always a fixed mass of 'the kids' whose sum total historical memory varies between five minutes and fifteen years, depending on the point trying to be made.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

iron maiden aren't hitting the charts any more. to your average 14 year old they are irrelevant. i think it's nice that this kind of music is getting airplay. i don't think it's better than the metal bands of the 80s but i think they get far too much schtick from grandads, "true" metal fans and indie snobs all trying to prove themselves because they can't face up to the fact that there are some undeniably catchy fun tunes on "permission to land". I have noticed recently that when I go out and there is background music on, nobody pays any attention till the Darkness get played - suddenly everyone knows all the words, the silly falsetto bits, the guitar solos - and i think that's great.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I think there's an assumption that there's always a fixed mass of 'the kids' whose sum total historical memory varies between five minutes and fifteen years, depending on the point trying to be made.

this reminds me of the melody maker, where we were told we couldn't refer to artists who existed before 1990 because 'the kids' didn;t care about them and wouldn't know who they were (this was 1997)... which was bullscrap, since the teenagers i knew and loved back then were deep in to 1960s psyche and funk and spent all weekend high at rare groove and retro clubs dancing till they bled.

we made the references anyway, but often the subs would blunder in... had a reference to Isaac Hayes changed to Barry White once (this was pre-South Park, obv)...

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

there's not a kid into rock music in this country who doesn't go through a phase of exploring classic rock. even if only for a month.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

iron maiden aren't hitting the charts any more.

New single debuted in the UK at #6 and got them on Top of the Pops, album debuted at #2 in the UK and top 20 in the US, all very good numbers. Sorry, that's not going to fly.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

there's not a kid into rock music in this country who doesn't go through a phase of exploring classic rock. even if only for a month.

OTFuckingM. In my case about six months back in 1988.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

also, classic rock RADIO is still a hugely viable market here.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

fair enough, but tygers of pantang certainly aren't. what's the problem with a new band making this kind of sound?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

*puts head in hands* To quote myself:

Look, what Dave Q is saying in his (scabrously funny) article is what I've been saying as well the last couple of days -- namely, if you like the Darkness
you'll probably REALLY love (x, y, z, any list of bands and songs).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not trying to say there's a problem, I'm trying to say there's a LOT of other stuff out there like them! That you might enjoy! A hell of a goddamn lot!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

iron maiden aren't hitting the charts any more.

Name ONE Iron Maiden chart hit in the US.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

(Songs obv)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not trying to say there's a problem, I'm trying to say there's a LOT of other stuff out there like them! That you might enjoy! A hell of a goddamn lot!

i thought that was the whole point! Nobody's going to sit listening to the Darkness going "Oh ya, how futuristic!". Even a six year old would know that and so do the darkness. it's a bit of a revival and as with all revivals they're not always as good as the real thing. The Darkness have made 1 album and Iron Maiden have a zillion and 3 on last count, so of course Def Leppard and Iron Maiden are going to sound better, what with Pyromania being the biggest selling album evah or whatevah.
Then again I could diss Iron Maiden and Def Leppard as false metal pussies, saying that they rip-off Judas Priest et al, but I won't.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Then again I could diss Iron Maiden and Def Leppard as false metal pussies, saying that they rip-off Judas Priest et al, but I won't.

Oh go on

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a bit of a revival and as with all revivals they're not always as good as the real thing.

Hold on, this is an assumption on your part. Why couldn't the Darkness be better than the 'real' thing? It all comes down to the individual listener.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

no because then someone would diss priest for ripping off black sabbath and led zepellin.

This is what I've been trying to express: Tom is totally right to ask for that c90, it is the Right Thing To Do, but because of the stigma attaching to metal (which will outlast the darkness) i don't think everyone will be so well behaved. Ned's right they/I probably wd enjoy it, but... what can you do? It's a shallow world. I get pissed off that Tarantino fans don't know their Godard.

Did most of that neverending thread just fall out of your head or something?

Yeah, those first few Subway Sect singles rock my motherfuckin' world. Oh you mean Jean-Luc? Fuck that gaseous old fraud.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 30 October 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

How does Permission To Land compare with the first album from Def Leppard, Maiden, etc etc?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 30 October 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I heart Dan. More seriously:

I probably wd enjoy it, but... what can you do? It's a shallow world. I get pissed off that Tarantino fans don't know their Godard.

Yes but -- compare how much relative time/effort it takes to scare up five specific films to watch all the way through vs. how long it takes to download and listen to, say, five three-minute songs. Your philosophical point is taken but In This Modern World, the ability to find out more and more immediately for this specific medium is child's play. So since you probably *would* enjoy it, off ya go. Set some stuff to download while you listen to the Darkness album again if you like and then check back!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 October 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish Jean-Luc had retired and become a postman rather than Vic

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 30 October 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

(Although really, if the anti-Darkness folks are coming across the same way the anti-Kill Bill folks did, then Enrique has a point.)

(Actually he doesn't, because the only person who bothered to base his opinion on the actual film was Girolamo, so never mind.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 30 October 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Nickalicious as well, yeah? So two on that thread, at least (but neither were M*m*s).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 October 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned -- I'd love to, but I don't have the technology. I am valve amp using luddite yes

Did most of that neverending thread just fall out of your head or something?

Hell yeah! I'm not doing this for posterity. I'm trying to work out how I feel. My actual writing process is Kubrickian-Flaubertian [only deeply, deeply middlebrow]. This is fun!

I was anti-Kill Bill and pro-Darkness. I'm just being contrary.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 30 October 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned -- I'd love to, but I don't have the technology. I am valve amp using luddite yes

Ah well, then see if Jel on that C90 thread will make you a copy of what he's making Tom. There are always ways!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 October 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, I just double-checked and Nickalicious liked the movie! WTF no one else has my encyclopedic recall of pointless arguments????

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 30 October 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

See, when you check that thread very casually while on vacation, you forget who hated what.

The only other source that matters besides Dave Q weighs in.

I think people are wanting an 80s style band so bad that anybody who comes along remotely like that is automatically fucking GREAT! Not quite. The riffs are decent but not that memorable, the songs are average, and the only thing that really stands out is the singer's high ass voice.

WISE WORDS.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

man, if i had a girlfriend named Elyxette i would be completely happy.
