Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 30 October 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I just bought an iPod, so in a word, no.

Michael G, Thursday, 30 October 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

this is a pay per download deal right¿

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 30 October 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

yep. or a monthly subscription.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 30 October 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Napster can suck my cocks. It's nothing to me now. I don't want to know it. I Don't want to see it.

ModJ (ModJ), Thursday, 30 October 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't bought anything with it yet (nor do I think I will) but I poked around. I was expecting nothing but it *slightly* exceeded my expectations. Still, nothing really special. The selection isn't much different from iTunes which is also silly.

Elyn (elynbeth), Thursday, 30 October 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

They don't offer mp3s, right? So what's the point?

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 30 October 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

trendy flash cartoons sponsred by microsoft, yahoo, and lots of other crap corporations. you pay for weak selection, i think most of the $$ goes toward marketing,(mis)management, MTV commercials, etc.. nice try but no thanks..

pete from the street, Thursday, 30 October 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't believe anyone actually bought napster, especially with the intention of making it a pay service. noone's gonna have name brand loyalty for a music downloading program if it turns its back on the entire ethic of free music that it started with. i'll be eternally indebted to sean fanning, but its not gonna make me stop using slsk and start spending money i dont have.

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 30 October 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd pay $30 a month for unlimited downloads and use it over soulseek if all the files are on a central server and they can guarantee quick download times and quality files, something like 192 kb/s.

But Easynews is only $10 a month, and I choose newsgroups over all the file sharing networks anyway. When I actually like something enough that I'm willing to contribute, my money goes directly to the artist or label through their websites.

Shaun (shaun), Friday, 31 October 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i wouldn't even consider using it if you had to pay for it

robin (robin), Friday, 31 October 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

ethic of free music

sounds very noble.

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 31 October 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Keith, it's just payback for all that shitty music we bought before the Internet. These post-Internet kids, though... theye's no excuse for them.

Shaun (shaun), Friday, 31 October 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I have two answers to this question:
Answer One
Answer Two

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Friday, 31 October 2003 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't plan on using it either. Just wanted to see if anyone did. godamn downloadists.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 31 October 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it gets a Pitchfork 5.4. And please don't laugh at me for not knowing who Jam & Spoon are.

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Thursday, 6 November 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Napster is just Napster for those who can't be arsed about Napster.

jazz odysseus, Thursday, 6 November 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I have free access to it at work, which is nice. I can theoretically sit and "stream" lots of music. (Though some stuff, like most Matador tracks, for instance, is available only in 30-second streams; you have to buy it to download it.) It's a lot better designed than Pressplay. But I can never really think of anything to listen to. I sure wouldn't pay for it (but then, I wouldn't listen to music on my computer anywhere other than work, anyway).

anon amouse (samjeff), Thursday, 6 November 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! Chris, I like "dot-coma".

David A. (Davant), Thursday, 6 November 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
My school was the first to pony up cash for Napster for everyone and I'm trying to write a letter opposing this. I've heard that Napster lets the labels pay much less substantial royalties to the artists because there is some law that forces a minimum royalty but doesn't apply online. Does anyone have any info on this?

Lil' Won Jilliams (ex machina), Saturday, 3 April 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

ANYONE?

Lil' Won Jilliams (ex machina), Monday, 5 April 2004 07:16 (twenty-one years ago)

ANYONE?

Aren't digital rights handled differently, leading to chaos as artists try not to get ripped off by the new online distribution systems? I would try Googling around to see if you can find a good lawyer-written discussion of this.

I know that Penn State was one of the first to sign with Napster, and plenty of people there were upset about being forced to pay for it out of their student fees. Maybe it's worth checking around there (checking their student paper, etc.) to see if anyone did research like this?

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Monday, 5 April 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Aren't digital rights handled differently ...

Caveat: maybe they AREN'T different - I don't know. I'm just guessing.

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Monday, 5 April 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
I've been invited to the Napster 2.0 UK launch press conference on Thursday.

I don't know why they've asked me - have they been emailing a load of 'bloggers' in an attempt to get a hip, underground vibe going on?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
So can you basically not use the downloads for this service on an iPod/iTunes? Is there a way around that with some kind of shareware program?

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 02:39 (nineteen years ago)

No, they use Windows Media files.

svend (svend), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 02:50 (nineteen years ago)

Assholes.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 03:07 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, you mean you can't convert windows media to mp3s?

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 03:07 (nineteen years ago)

Not if they are protected by DRM, which these are.

lf (lfam), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 04:14 (nineteen years ago)

does ANYONE use this service?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 04:16 (nineteen years ago)

Had I not bought an iPod already, it'd be tempting to sign up for this at $9.99/month and get a compatible player.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 04:47 (nineteen years ago)

I use the new free napster quite a bit. I can link from my blog to individual tracks, most of which are free and full length albeit in low fidelity. Because of DRM, I probably won't subscribe.

Robert Gable (aworks), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 04:49 (nineteen years ago)

I think the new free service is great. No need to listen to 30 second clips on amazon/AMG/iTunes anymore.

Keith C (lync0), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

The new Napster is very convenient, no doubt about it. Highly recommend it. No reason to buy anything, but test out old records/new ones. Perfect for that.

Thirston, Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

So Napster is bought...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 15 September 2008 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

seems pointless
