I renamed the thread slightly because I think this is worth at least some note because it point to why the record industry is so fucked up at the moment: you have these big box retailers like Best Buy--whose business is emphatically NOT about the CDs or DVDs, but in the bigger ticket items--clearing new product out at prices that smaller retailers can't even try to match much of the time simply because their buying power won't get them the same wholesale discount at the big boys.

So now the Stones come along and release a new project, and make it available only through the Best Buy, which is a huge fuck-you to all of the smaller stores that have supported them for a long time...in essence it's adding insult to injury because now not only would they not have made any money on it in the first place, they can't even draw people into their store with the hopes they'll buy something else as part of the transaction...something they might actually make a couple of bucks at.

One big reason that Canadian retailer are so PISSED about this is that there aren't that many Best Buy stores across the country, which means that the item will have extremely limited distribution here despite the willingness of most of the retailers across the country to carry this, if they'd had the option. It's a terrible precedent to set, because if other people pick up on this it'll make the retail landscape in Canada all the worse, especially outside major centres.

i think that independent retailers are the ones who have been hit the hardest by filesharing as well.
