Bring earplugs.

...and some holy water.

I saw her at Joe's Pub in NYC this time last year. It was scary and freakish and amazing -- go see her. She's a beast.

I kept missing her shows in NYC, but I kept being told she's phenomenal. Go, as who knows when/if she would be back?

Nichole, she's back -- 11/19-11/20 at Joe's Pub.

You can't smoke at any of her shows. It's worth it though.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 30 October 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

What, really? She forbids it?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 30 October 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay that's a leap. But she forbade it about five years ago at the Knitting Factory. I sort of forgot all about my cigarettes during her songs, but after each one I felt like I needed to smoke a pack.

two weeks pass...
Diamanda Galas is my new anti-smoking nazi patron saint!

I've only seen her twice, but both performances were very impressive. Does anyone know if "Defixiones" is still a work in progress? I guess I could just check her web-site. I hadn't heard of "Frenzy" until now.

so what did you do colin?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 16 November 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio, i went to see Diamanda which was... good, but slightly dissappointing i suppose. Maybe i'm just putting her in too much of a box but i expected a much more intense experience. Frenzy is pretty bluesy compared to some of the stuff i have heard her do, she came across more like a female tom waits with occasional added screaming. more growly vocals than scary ones. It was good to see her though and i think that in a smaller or more atmospheric venue i might have got the experience i was anticipating (with dread, to some extent). But then i suppose its god to have your illusions about a articular performer, shattered.

One of the Highlights of the show was where she got up from her piano and came to the front of the stage to seek out a persistant heckler (a drunken woman who kept roaring and screaming through the earlier tracks)

"who the fock is making that noise [looks for her in the audience and asks someone to point her out] what do you think your doing you peicea shit? get this asshole outta here, already" the woman was allowed to stay in the venue after lenghty apologies and promises to be quite.

It added a ceratin piquancy to the night!
