THE DISTILLERS - Drain The Blood

Fishman, Sunday, 2 November 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Interestingly, we've had "Hurt" all over the chart, from ILM 'punters' so far... it would be one of the finest number 1s (indeed, in what has been quite a good year for No. 1s) there has been. It could make it easily if the generally non-singles buying demographic catch on and buy it. Yet... I'd be wary of it fully making it; is it playlisted anywhere? Has it been getting quite the sufficient publicity?

SteveM; you have two number 2s, it seems. ;-)

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 2 November 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh that's intentional, Blazin' Squad sounds like a possible number 1, more than Kylie...but my hunch remains with the Fatman

Matt Goss new at #22.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 9 November 2003 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

God... Wes proves himself the smug idiot to an even greater extent with each 'interview' he conducts... :-/
"Maybe"... 'tis a very nice song; in surer hands it could have been great. Dear me, this is a fairly poor chart. Goldfrapp and Wildhearts didn't grab me especially; "Hurt" of course dwarfs allcomers, yet it's very low. I suppose it's good that it least got in the Top 40... a statement of sorts; I must say it was the first single I'd bought for what has seemed like an age.
Did Butters have to play that bloody irritating saccharine, 10-weeks-on-chart "Baby Boy" (of t' Big Brovaz variety) *yet again*, despite its having falled ten places to #40?

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 9 November 2003 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Lostprophets #17. Dido #16. No points for anyone there.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 9 November 2003 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

#14 for R Kelly, 1 point for Fishman.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 9 November 2003 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Knobbie Sillybums is #10. 5 for me and Tom, 1 for Ed and Alex.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 9 November 2003 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Blazin' Sprogs #2, Kylie #1, Wildhearts Highest-Placed ROCKNESS. Points, picks to follow in due course.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 9 November 2003 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

'B*u*sted!' Wes' obsession with that band continues as he gives them undue emphasis again... and his cod-northern vowels. Surely it has to be be beaten by such a great single next week as Outkast's "Hey Ya"...
The whole Wobbie and Busted worship Wes seems to indulge in every time they're in the album chart or singles chart is profoundly boring; today he was on about Robbie endlessly (despite it being a very mediocre 5th single off an album or something like that...) as well as his own cameo in some British film... the man has a terrible perspective on music.

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 9 November 2003 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

he was openly cheering on "Crashed the Wedding" as his favourite for next week's number one - Goodier absolutely never showed this kind of bias, and if he did get excited over Pulp doing so well in 1995 then he had a reason to because, unlike Busted, they were fucking great. in some ways Wes' relentless bias in favour of certain songs/artists could even be seen to compromise the BBC's integrity, and would have been such as such for most of the Corporation's history (note how you hardly ever hear it referred to as "the Corporation" these days, tellingly). and while he is a Mancunian, he doesn't sound particularly Manc at all - he uses the modern equivalent of the cliched 1980s DJ speak that Gary Davies adopted - so the way he emphasises the Manc pronounciation of "Boosted" before then slipping back into his usual cod-Estuary whine is as false as you like. Mark and Lard would pronounce Busted like that, but they pronounce everything else like that, so you don't notice it at all, and even when they hate the records they're playing they, like everyone else on Radio 1 possibly apart from Moyles, are better than Wes.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Sunday, 9 November 2003 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't that more a sort of Yorkshire pronunciation of Busted, though?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 9 November 2003 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

NO

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Sunday, 9 November 2003 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

It won't be #1 though will it? One guesses that our dear Wes will be thwarted again. Isn't this the third or fourth single off their album (if indeed it is off their album; i've not been bothered enough to find out)?
Can't say I expect the Kylie single to last that long at the top though... but surely there's a better challenger than Busted.

This Butters grates on me more each Sunday I listen to the charts; the 'funny' or 'risque' pre-song interviews, the blatant favouritism to certain acts, the lack of musical knowledge, clear lack of intellect or charm, the voice, the attitude - the man all round, frankly! He makes Goodier seem like Gielgud in comparison... I never really cared for Goodier much at the time when I listened to the charts from 1995-97, but at least recognised him as largely inoffensive and a *man for the job*, which Wes patently isn't.

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 9 November 2003 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Wes has basically decided that because he gets to ANNOUNCE THE OFFICIAL UK NUMBER ONE FIRST! each week he is by default the most significant figure in the uk music industry and in uk broadcasting. In fact, probably the world.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Sunday, 9 November 2003 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave Pearce played Chocolate Puma, and I was happy.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 9 November 2003 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Desert Sessions #41, Divine Inspiration #55.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 9 November 2003 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Outkast for next week's number one, then!!! (wishful thinking?)

robin carmody (robin carmody), Sunday, 9 November 2003 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

There is some dire shit out next week, isn't there? Ronan Keating and Red Hot Chilli Peppers in the same week - what are the chances, etc....
