Made his name on a remix of Bjork's "All is Full of Love" but Farmer's Manual were far more interesting before he even hit record.

lame Autechre rip-off. stick to the original.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 2 November 2003 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Diamond otm. Midtempo, Tri Repetae-era w/ vocals.

Also, Funkstorung = they.

I really like Grammy winners and some of the other songs with rap. Very good..

Jens (brighter), Sunday, 2 November 2003 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

When people say they sound like Autechre they mean the good Autechre- the one with the crunchy beats, and slowly evolving melody lines, before they got lost.

Which is good.

Recommeded:

All is Full of Love (Funkstorung remix) - Bjork
This Shit (b-side of the above track)
Grammy winners
Sonderdienste EP

if you can actually get around to downloading, i'd have to say that while i like funkstorung, their live sets absolutely blow away their recorded material. more upbeat, intended for dancing with a really funk to it that their recordings lack. shoot for the live bootlegs.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Sunday, 2 November 2003 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I like their remixes way more than their records. Search: Jay Jay Johanson - I Want Some Fun (Funkstorung remix). Sick, sick beat. Really class.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 2 November 2003 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

... Until you hear the original, or in fact, that entire JJJ record. Which is great.

Xii (Xii), Sunday, 2 November 2003 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Except for the cover. Prominent man nipples = dud.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 2 November 2003 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i heard they did a wu-tang remix,is it any good?

robin (robin), Sunday, 2 November 2003 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen 'em live once and it blowed. really boring boring boring.. I've also heard a Bootleg of a live show and it was boring boring boring.

HOwever I recon some of their shit is fine!. simlar turf to Autechre but I've alwyas thought it was much more hiphop and more about the beats than AE/ and less 8of the boring atmospheric melody. and witha better sense of funk.

especially check out the Deadly Wiz da Disko stuff which is one of the Funkstorung guys with someone else.

I'll also agree about the Bjork remix being fantastic. It's still all I've heard, though.

derrick (derrick), Monday, 3 November 2003 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Good remixes, generally poor albums. Massively indebted to Autechre, I personally don't have a problem with that but its just so obvious. They also got incredibly defensive about it when they were at their peak of Autechre-cloning, acting like they were doing something totally diff. Still- bits of "Appetite for Disctruction" are interesting (the MC'd tracks), the Bjork remixes are tops, and I think Michael Fakesch has a solo album (Demon? I'm not sure) that was good gritty digital stuff, very videogamey and intentionally so.

"This Shit" on the Bjork remix single is almost a note-for-note clone of one of the Autechre tracks on Envane, though. Great track so no complaints, but it's uncanny how close it is.

rob geary (rgeary), Monday, 3 November 2003 05:29 (twenty-one years ago)

One of the worst live shows I've EVER seen. Consisted of them playing back ever so slightly different mixes of their singles and album tracks and nodding at their own brilliance.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 3 November 2003 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

also their remix of Ike Yard off the ANTI-NY compilation on Gamma Records is great.

Nik (Nik), Monday, 3 November 2003 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

nine years pass...

Spent much of the last week emptying bookcases of CDs, moving bookcases, decorating, moving bookcases back and putting CDs back ... Funkstorung were a fun rediscovery.

eight years pass...

Reminded of them this week via the Jay-Jay Johanson remix.

One of the greatest tracks of all time.

Interesting that this thread wasn't bumped because the Musik Aus Strom catalogue was recently uploaded to Bandcamp.
https://musikausstrom.bandcamp.com

A few older Funkstorung EPs going up there too. YMMV, I'm not that excited but it's certainly part of IDM history.
