I was listening to both of these yesterday. Loved the verses but the chorus' are just one great dud.

Many of the songs on Phil Collins' "But Seriously" album could have been quite nice with proper choruses.

While maybe technically not much of a tune, I like the chorus of "Girls On Film". Partly because it's wonderfully arranged with some awesome flanged strings that are so typical of the new romantic style.

Feargal Sharkey - A good Heart
The verses are fine, the chorus is basically made up of verse off-cuts.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 22 February 2011 11:55 (fourteen years ago)
Oh, but the entire winner of this question has to be a song that:
If it were left to the verses only, would be a fair story of an experience where a man, out of his comfort zone, experiences a strange land, the danger and threat of it, and the seductive nature of it, within a very short time frame.
Add the choruses, and it's a bunch of racial stereotyping bobbins. Unfortunately, it seems clear to me the chorus came first and the verses were added later.
Dreadlock Holiday, 10cc.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 22 February 2011 11:57 (fourteen years ago)
Forever and Ever is a great shout. I'm sure that even at the tender age when I first heard that song I found it strange that that verse (gothic mystery) and that chorus (thudding glampop singalong) should have ended up in the same song.

It's always bothered me. The lines don't even fit, she is squeezed out on the 'how I love you'. For me it snaps back instantly on the returns to minor key.
― Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 22 February 2011 13:03 (fourteen years ago)
I like the fact that the lyrics seem squeezed, Aretha's breathless spontaneous charge into them is what makes it so exciting.

REM - King Of Comedy
This song seems to be only half-written. Verses sound like they're heading somewhere really good, only for them to go into a disappointing, flat as a pancake non-chorus. The ending is really anti-climatic too.
― TechYes, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 16:37 (thirteen years ago)
At Seventeen doesn't have a chorus. I've never cared much for America but listening to it again now, it has a pretty amazing structure. I can't say anything to fault the songwriting there at all. But yeah, the chorus is intentionally unfulfilling.
Part of the Dreadlock Holiday verse is kind of a ripoff of Play That Funky Music, isn't it? It technically doesn't really have a chorus either.

This thread is baffling. Come on Eileen? I Can See For Miles!? Say a Little Prayer!?!?! Whatever people.
― unmetalled world (wk), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 17:14 (thirteen years ago)
I like those songs you just mentioned plenty but I can see why people put them. But wait, "Say A Little Prayer"? Maybe the poster thought that the chorus was the part where she sings "I say a little prayer for you" and not the exciting "forever, whenever" part after the awesome trademark Bernie Purdie drum hit signaling the transition.
― Onimosapien (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 17:52 (thirteen years ago)
I would post "It's Only Rock and Roll" only the verse is not actually that great either.
I guess it's people who really focus on lyrics? Like sure, lyrically, I Can See For Miles is just the title repeated over and over again. And Say a Little Prayer doesn't use the title in the chorus, so maybe that's somehow unsatisfying for people?

Ah ! I've always preferred the video version because the chorus only comes in at the end. After the tension builds up, verse after verse. The chorus is not shit though. It just works better when it comes as a release, imo.
