Don't know if this is necessary, but how's about a thread commemorating(?) Careless Talk Costs Lives which published its last issue the other day...

Hail and farewell. I had a good time with it, I did.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

it had its ups.

jed (jed_e_3), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Sigh, I could only ever find one issue in Toronto.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

they stock it in soundscapes, no?

jed (jed_e_3), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

One issue was, the YYY's who sucked, but i bought the magazine anyways. Nice paper. But my inquires and not so subtle promotion of said magazine did not help me find it in their wares.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it in British shops nationwide yet? I looked for it this morning but couldn't see the bugger.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The only issue I have, I bought it when I went to Exeter. I was impressed by the quality of the texts, the graphic design, and the fact that Ned used to listen to Napalm Death while working in a library.

I kept meaning to try and be one of those ILXors who gets things published in CTCL, but sadly laziness and lack of talent got in the way. Farewell CTCL!

does the last issue have Scout Niblett on the cover AGAIN?

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Got the last issue in Virgin yesterday.

alext (alext), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

nope. The Gossip grace the last Cover. an honour.

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

the fact that Ned used to listen to Napalm Death while working in a library.

Sometimes it's the only answer.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I guess I should start listening to Lightning Bolt before visiting my customers, I guess it would turn me into a more aggressive salesman...

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Just saw it in Cardiff Megastore, aye... looks good, will actually buy it tomorrow. If anyone from CTCL is actually reading this, thanks you, it has invariably been a pleasure...

Ditto. Although I did send a bunch of stuff to Jerry about 18 months ago - his total lack of response led me to believe I wasn't up to scratch...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

...or he didn't think you were up to scratch.
Which is totally different.

For my part, it was/is kinda inspirational.

It had its flaws, basically the fact that it kinda became a place for not quite music journalists to torture themselves (although that's mostly to do with the embarassment I suffered having such a self-deluding and self-interested article published) and the fact it was, despite the blather, surprisingly narrow in its musical focus.

Nevertheless, it was amazing. It showed there were 'others' out there. It showed there were others who seemed to care about such sucky things as music journalism. The isues I read occupy the top however many places in my list of best mags ever. This is despite the fact I couldn't give a monkeys about 99% of the bands covered.

I really hope the new mags live up to it by completely ignoring its legacy.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

this had to be one of the worst distributed magazines ever. you would see one copy in borders and never see it again then see a copy in some unlikely looking corner shop 4 issues later.

jed (jed_e_3), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Farewell, CTCL. I will miss you. Sniff.

Ben Dot (1977), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Where do you live Jed? I'm in Cardiff and after it stopped being distributed by individual people (ie literally going and putting them in the shops themselves) it seemed to be available reguarly and in decent quantities...

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

where does one find a copy of CTCL in new york?

fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Mencap - i'm in Glasgow - i found the last one in borders today though.
