Critically reviled, unpopular among the post-pubescent these days - but I listened to Four-Minute Mile and Something To Write Home About today, and they're not still not that bad, compared to most rock music.

sounds like Superchunk

Yup, just like Superchunk.

like Superchunk if they were physically incapable of writing great singles, maybe. The Get Up Kids are horrific writers, but they are FINE covers band. Their versions of "Close To Me" and "Alec Eiffel" are way fun.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Correct. They sounded like Superchunk w/o the hooks.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Indefensibly bland and insignificant. They exist solely to make Braid look better.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

bland and insignificant

So that's the secret ingredient.

I was way more entertained by them live than Superchunk.

I saw them with Weezer and someone else on the Yahoo-sponsored tour. They were much better than whoever the opener was, and I'd say they were better than Weezer, but Weezer was too awful to compare anyone to.

"Alec Eiffel" is one of the better Pixies covers I've heard. That's really the only good thing about them. Even Jimmy Eat World is better than them.

jimmy eat world write nice hooks

I don't know if they're that bad. I bought "Eudora" on a whim and I like a lot of it. Granted the covers ("Alec Eiffel", "Regret", "Close to Me") are the best songs on the album but "Forgive and Forget" is a pretty good tune and I also like "Anne Arbour".

Pretty boring live though. I kept waiting for something to happen, and it never did.

I was horrified by the sheer insipidity (is that a word?) or Four Minute Mile the first time I heard it. Is this the same GUK people always associate with, how you say, being good? And I bear no grudge against sappy pop-punk, per se.
