Michael Ng (Mike Ng), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 06:40 (twenty-one years ago)

thank you!

"99 Problems" is sounding pretty fucking wild right now.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 06:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"99 Problems" made my hair stand on end.

Famous Athlete, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 06:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i actually think that may be the weakest track on the album... i dont like rick rubin really at all....

lucifer... that song is fucking crazy. love the beat love the sample. kanye is the best producer in the business right now. & the threat is a nice timbo beat.

my 5 fave songs right now:

my name is hov
lucifer
the threat
soundtrack
what more can i say

"Lucifer" is making me smile very widely now.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't have song titles but the eminem song is fucking mercury

sean., Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:09 (twenty-one years ago)

big up mr ng you've made my morning proper

sean., Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I just started 3 and 8-14.

Will you be rotating the others up soon?

I can't get to your files on slsk cause of my school's firewall

ddrake, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

no problem. i love this... so far the only 2 tracks i wish werent on the album are... 99 problems & change clothes & go.

besides those 2 (which arent bad, i just wish they wenret on the black album) its great.

problem with "the theater".... its supposed to be a dre beat, but im 99.99% sure that this beat is something the neptunes would do.

Michael Ng (Mike Ng), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, ill prolly but 1-7 up tomorrow or something when eveyrone gets the files

Michael Ng (Mike Ng), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:14 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah 99 problems would be good if it was just pure spitting like takeover but the lyrics are pretty dull and the beat just plain boring after the first 4 bars. i like the em one best so far, track 8 i think. the just blaze one is seriously good as well.

sean., Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:17 (twenty-one years ago)

yea i like the em track. but i must say, i spotted his production from a mile away after the first few seconds. he does it well & the strings are very good... the track sounds very baroque... but sooner or later dudes gonna need to switch up his styles if he wants to be the da vinci of rap.

Michael Ng (Mike Ng), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Theater" is definitely Neptunes...pretty lame, too, what the fuck is up with the gunshots?

"My First Song" is hot, I just wish the whole 2nd half wasn't shoutouts.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Argggg.

I can't wait for this.

Seriously, my most anticipated album of the year, ahead of Soul Position and Non-Prophets...download is slow.

ddrake, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm starting to feel like "What More Can I Say?" is going to sound just perfect in the context of the album...

SPANIARD! SPANIARD! SPANIARD! SPANIARD!

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I love you, Michael Ng!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

he flows just like big boi on my first song, but i like the 2nd verse with all the shout outs

sean., Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

'my first song' is fucking killer. the neps track sucked

is there a production list out yet?

JasonD (JasonD), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:33 (twenty-one years ago)

01:. Intro 01:21
02:. December 4 04:33 (prod. Just Blaze)
03:. What More Can I Say 04:55 (Buchannans)
04:. Encore 04:11 (Kanye)
05:. Change Clothes and Go 04:18 (Neptunes)
06:. The Threat 04:05 (Timbaland)
07:. Soundtrack 04:06 (9th Wonder)
08:. Moment of Clarity 04:24 (Eminem)
09:. 99 Problems 03:54 (Rick Rubin)
10:. My Name is Hov 02:53 (Just Blaze)
11:. Justify My Thug 04:04 (DJ Quik)
12:. Lucifer 03:12 (Kanye)
13:. The Theater 04:52 (not sure, Neptunes or Dre)
14:. My First Song 04:45 (Aqua)

but like i said... "the theater" is sketch at the moment...

& yeah, my first song is niiiiiiiiice. jay has an eye for spotting talent... aqua is gonna be making some really nice beats in the future.

Michael Ng (Mike Ng), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:36 (twenty-one years ago)

michael got that crack.

great album, and theather is definitely neptunes. isn't pharrell on that track even?

i'm not convinced this is the final version of the album, because a lot of people who had heard the beats for the album a couple weeks ago said theater was definitely dre - very dark with ominous piano and strings and whatnot. am i imagining that?

adam west (adamwest), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

What's funny about "Moment of Clarity" is that it doesn't just have the Em production, the whole thing sounds like an Eminem song, all the stuff about his dad and everything. (Not that Jay's never talked about his dad before, but it has that confessional/angry/redemptive thing of Em's.) Maybe Em should produce a whole album of people rapping about their parents.

spittle (JesseFox), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I want Eminem to cover "Parents Just Don't Understand".

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:41 (twenty-one years ago)

DOC references make me happy.

ddrake, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The Rick Rubin production is awesome. I can't believe peepz were criticizing this.

ddrake, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I GOT 99 PROBLEMZ AND A BITCH AIN'T ONE HUH!

ddraked, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 07:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The Theater is definitely misnamed or something.

ddrake, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 08:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Megadittoes, "99 Problems" rocks, I especially love the
cop verse.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, this is hott.
thanks to michael ng!

todd swiss (eliti), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 09:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The spiralling rhymes and abstract (for him) metaphors
of "Justify My Thug" make me think that Jay-Z has been
bumping Aceyalone.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh shit they sampled Max Romeo! Kanye marry me

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Rick Rubin track is hot like bacon

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

is there the possibility of a rotate back to the first 9 tracks? :)

minna (minna), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"I'm like Che Guevara with bling on"

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

That rick rubin thing is dire. It sounds like he got fred durst to bang on a dustbin while Jay spits stuff that is frankly beneath him...

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, it sounds like Jay-Z joined Run DMC. And that's a good thing.

For the love of god, put the rest of it up willya!

bugged out, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

This is goodness! Make the rest of ILM happy and post the rest, please.

Miggie (Miggie), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Word! THe people have waited long enough!

ddrake, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Eminem's production always makes him come off like a hip-hop Andrew Eldritch

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

That's precisely the part of him that's the best, Mr. D. "White America" totally made me think of the Sisters first time I heard it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

(michael, is there any chance of the rest of this appearing real soon? cos i'm about to burn a cd and i dont wanna refresh to no suprises)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like "Change Clothes." I don't know whether it's because I first heard it in the context of Benji B's show and there was all sorts of other good stuff bookending it or what.

cybele (cybele), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

nice one michael, downloading track 10 now, thanks for putting it up
(don't rotate it too quickly if possible,i'm on a 56k connection!)

robin (robin), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Awwwww we have to wait for 56k mutherfuckers? ;)

ddrake, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i can put the first half up if you guys want

Michael Ng (Mike Ng), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes yes yes yes.

ddrake, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, tracks 1-7 are up

enjoy :)

Michael Ng (Mike Ng), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

It was up for a second anyway.

ddrake, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

wait what happened?

Michael Ng (Mike Ng), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Um...I'm downloading 3 of the tracks, but the link itself no longer works when I click on it...

ddrake, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

*listening baffledly, still not getting it, giving up in T-minus 5...4...3...*

nickalicious feels bad that he can't understand what everyone loves 'bout this (, Friday, 7 November 2003 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Inoffensive (thug shit kept to a minimum, most songs about making records-- no bodily fluids), he samples old records instead of all that bullshit electronic stuff! ('When are those people going to make real music again instead of ringtones with people talking about guns over them-- if I wanted that I would listen to that shitty English rap that pretends it isn't rap!'), check those rock guitars, derides commercial rap and shouts out Talib Kweli and Che Guevara, so we know he's not just an immoral monster like all of those other rappers.

d k (d k), Friday, 7 November 2003 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

a fair bit of thug shit on it, actually. enough for me not to feel that threat's a concession. but if it is, i'll still take it and grin: "i put the gun to ya/ i let it sing you a song/ i let it hum to ya/ the other one sing along/ now it's a duet/and you wet/ when you check out the technique/ from the two teks/ and i don't need two lips/ to blow this like a trumpet/ you dumb shit/ this is an unusual musical i conducted". you do have a point dk - this is something of a rock critic's jay-z album, but hell, the verses are great, rock guitars appear once, i reckon it's just as 'bleepy' as, say, vol. 2, if there's a soulful luddite in kanye, i'd rather have him squeezing heat outta old motown hits than hi tek...

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 7 November 2003 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

if there's a real lack of any jay lyrical staples, it's bitches and pussy. do we really mind?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 7 November 2003 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I have "The Black Album" on booty in the car. I cannot wait for the authentic to hit the stores, the bootleg is just gonna hold me down until 11/14. This is his best lyrical album, moving Vol.1 to his 2nd best. At first I skimmed through the production, thinking he could have done a lil better. Then I listened deep into the verses. I see he has brought the game to a higher level. On my bootleg CD I have 14 tracks, but the authentic will only have 12. Jay-Z is the best rapper of all time. I love the blow he gave at 50 on the end of "What More Can I Say". I hate 50 and I truly hope him and Jay don't do any more music together. "My First Song" is a nice banga. It's about time he claim the crown and stop giving others his shine. "I am the best rapper alive" he quotes, I guess he's leaving the big picture to Pac or Big. We all know it, Jay is the best of 'em all.

Angelo Davies, Saturday, 8 November 2003 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

raju, Saturday, 8 November 2003 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

First thing after the Rapture show ended at First Ave, the DJ puts on "December 4". Ha! Right after I was thinking Echoes and The Black Album are probably gonna be a tie for 3rd on my Pazz and Jop. And I don't like it for the "typical rock critic reasons", but the fact that the beats are good growers (not out-the-gate ball grabbers -- that's the lyrics' job) and the feeling of "this could be it/make every album like it's your last while making every song like it's the first one you have to cement your rep with" is gripping.

I'm definitely buying it. Possibly on vinyl. REKID DORK AHOY

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 8 November 2003 05:36 (twenty-one years ago)

On my bootleg CD I have 14 tracks, but the authentic will only have 12 what's going to be missing? is there only going to be one version for sale?

you know, i just re-listened to blueprint in my car, (which really seems like his last "real" album - can we just pretend that blueprint never happpened?), and i appreciate it a lot more now than when it came out, the beats really grab you. but i think the black albums feels a little deeper based on the tracks i heard, and the beats being growers instead of grabbers is just a part of it. there seems to be more concentration, and just little touches of emotional resonance that come out of nowhere, that i didn't notice as much on the earlier albums. for example, on "my name is hov," the way his voice inflects just a little when he says "i walk like a ball player," then rises again for "no matter where you go ," and dips again for "you are what you are player," it really makes you feel what he's saying this time, and it's not just empty boasting. he's obv somewhat conflicted about leaving, and i don't even buy this retirement-forever nonsense, but his ambivalence is coming through on some of these tracks almost subtly - and i know thats hardly a word normally used to describe anything he does. hell, even the parts he's not on feel a bit darker and deeper this time around -in the same song, the PSA "interlude" part, for example, it's a nice break, and gives a sort of space to the track. it all works really well imo, and though i still have to hear the other half, i'm willing to wager that this might be regarded as his best album . now lets just hope he doesn't come out of retirement next year for a black album pt. II...

Vic (Vic), Saturday, 8 November 2003 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, this one really proves the 'every other album' rule with jay, huh? black album really feels like the next step from blueprint. i actually prefer it right now because it doesn't sag like blueprint does later on. plus he gets the eminem-goth-out over with halfway through with a much better beat this time, then clears the air with "99 problems."

rob geary (rgeary), Saturday, 8 November 2003 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

*also shares the general mark of jay-quality with blueprint 1: no guest verses!

rob geary (rgeary), Saturday, 8 November 2003 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

haha vic right on about the inflections. in "moment" he delivers that line, "truth be told/i'd probably be/lyrically talib kweli" he delivers the whole thing like kweli would do it, with slightly awkward pauses filling out the line and everything. then by the end of the verse he's back to classic jigga-style asides when he's comparing his mind to the rims (the throwaway aside "rims that is" being classic jay-drops-the-delivery-completey-to-talk-straight-to-you)

rob geary (rgeary), Saturday, 8 November 2003 07:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I should be in the absent-minded hall of fame, really. can we just pretend that blueprint never happpened = can we just pretend that blueprint PART II never happened, of course

Vic (Vic), Saturday, 8 November 2003 07:20 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck, "lucifer" is like crack. i'm listening to it at least twice a day right now.

rob geary (rgeary), Saturday, 8 November 2003 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

the intertwining guitars and piano are great.

rob geary (rgeary), Saturday, 8 November 2003 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah rob you're right about blueprint sagging - the 2nd half isnt as strong as the first imo, which is just riveting

Vic (Vic), Saturday, 8 November 2003 07:40 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, blueprint ramps up with every track until it's just unbelievable. then after "heart of the city" it goes a little gooey and oatmeal. midtempo quicksand.

rob geary (rgeary), Saturday, 8 November 2003 07:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i still think i could cut up something nearly as good as blueprint (1) out of blueprint 2 and 2.1. especially if you tack on "beware of the boys" or "crazy in love" as your special bonus b-side depending on your taste. but i haven't bothered.

rob geary (rgeary), Saturday, 8 November 2003 07:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Blueprint 2 had one classic album of great songs on it.

ddrake, Saturday, 8 November 2003 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Ya'll niggaz need to recognize, ya'll startin some beef with jay z. He my nigga and he's gonna shootup your homes for messin with money, Suckkasss!

PIMP McPIMP, Saturday, 8 November 2003 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

ya'll some scared ass bitches now. What ya'll gonna say now, huh? Bunch of crack smokin honkeys, i'll put trade marks around yo eyes muthafucka. 2Pac Lives!!! 2Pac Lives!!!

PIMP McPIMP, Saturday, 8 November 2003 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, I'm sick of people hating on The Gift & The Curse. sure, it wasn't a tidy little package and it could've been edited down, but he had some incredibly hot verses on Hovi Baby, The Watcher 2, Poppin' Tags, The Bounce, etc etc.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 8 November 2003 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the existence of THAT LENNY KRAVITZ COLLABORATION that detracts from everything good about Blueprint 2, I think (and, of course, the living-corpse-exploding "Bitches and Sisters" should have been part of the album proper, not tacked on in the slightly tacky way it was)

robin carmody (robin carmody), Saturday, 8 November 2003 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that I believe for a second that this is his last album.

What's the line after "When I come back like Jordan" in Encore?

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 8 November 2003 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"when i come back like jordan/wearin' the 45/it ain't to play games wit you/it's to aim at you/prob'ly maim you"

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Saturday, 8 November 2003 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

There you go. In seventeen months' time he will be releasing a 45 rpm record on a Washington label, possibly Sub Pop, that will kill either Nas or 50 Cent or whoever.

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 8 November 2003 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I will be so glad when this album drops. if people only knew how my boyfriend sits and concentrates on every lyric and beat. i have heard every jay-z song ever written. today when i heard the black album i noticed a drastic change in his whole state of mind. if 50 cent and the so called unit really think that thier album will overide this one they are in for a big disappointment.

TIFFANY, Saturday, 8 November 2003 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm only feeling about 1/2 of it but OMG is "my first song" the fucking hotness

strongo hulkington's ghost (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 8 November 2003 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i think all the song on the album is fire i mean off the meter.
couldn't do a better job. but the best song (lyrics beat and producer) was December 4th. maybe it the best because i can relate to it And thats my opinion.

What Happened to Big PimPin 2? They said it was supposed to be on the album

PeEdi CrAcK, Monday, 10 November 2003 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

C'mon people.....Has anyone figured out the sample in "what more can i say" Uni aint doin a 12", so the instrumental is tough to track out..ANY HELP OR GUESSES??

Chris Donnelly, Monday, 10 November 2003 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't stop listening...I wake up to this ish and bang it all day. It ain't never coming outta the CD changer! If this is it for Jay then he went out like the champ that he is...Ain't no N---a like Jay-Z! A true classic from start to finish, Jay puts forth his best effort ever as he singlehandedly touches every style and mood he has ever put on wax...Two bootleg copies already and I will cop the real one on Friday. Thanks S. Carter, it's your time.."this one's for the money!"

Tony Deals, Monday, 10 November 2003 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

THIS CD IS HOT!!!!!! I got a copy of it Friday (Nov.7th), and it hasn't come out of my cd player since!!!. "Lucifer" is the hottest track (in my opinion). Songs like that are part of the reason Kanye's cd is so anticpated. I know i can't wait for it. I don't think there is a weak track on here. "Change Clothes" isn't the best thing i've ever heard from Jay, but it's still tight. It's good that someone blew the dust off of Rick Rubin ass as far a RAP production goes. "99 Problems" brings back a sort of "License To Ill" feeling. I also like the fact that Jay is elaborating more on the feelings he had when his pop left him. Nothing draws people to you like personal experiences. I hope this isn't the final version. I've had early bootlegs of Jay's cd's since "...Vol. 3", and none of them have been the final versions. I definitely have to give this cd a 9 out of 10. It's going to stay in my cd layer well into the New Year. Good luck to G-Unit trying to out sell H-O-V-A!!!! IT WON'T EVER HAPPEN!!!!

Jay Hearn, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn i can't stop listening....... this is amazing. Every track is off the hook. i expected better from change clothes, but i'll deal with it. i hope the next single will be dirt off your shoulder cuz can't ya see everyone in the club brussin their shoulders? And i hope the last single (probably will Be) is my first song, cuz what a perfect way to end an era with a tight beat and tight raps about his own career.

jay hove #1, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 05:28 (twenty-one years ago)

from Connecticut.... i got 26 songs from the black album with the other 15 he did't put on the CD... He's close to a god.....!

East Coast till i DIE!!!!!!!
V/R
COOGI!!!!!!

COOGI, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

...3 stars
Threat (9th wonder is nice, almost Premier like)
Lucifer
Changing clothes
99 problems, flow lyrics sick
Encore
What more can I say (hate the beat, love the lyrics)
PSA (should have been longer)

...the rest(not the best)
Dirt off your shoulder
My first song
Justify my thug
December 4 (we've heard this all b4)
Intro
Allure(hate slo tempo Pharrell tracks)

what happened to Dre, Primo tracks? what happened to My name is Hova. there are like 5 tracks missing/replaced. I think he's gona reup with a white album.
jigga is jigga, lyrics okay, flows are good this time. beats are lame-o. nice attempt to get away from the blueprint sound, not too many old sample loops. just straight nyc boom bap. just not all that good. flows are incredible. i'm still lovin the neptune sound, kanye holds his own. timbo track is better than ususal. my fav jigga was primo stuff from first cd and unreleased stuff with jaz-o and sauce. he always kills posse cuts. he never really carried a whole track lyrically to me. his punch lines on features particularly the first and last were usually killer. oh well hip hop continues to fade miserably.

Chad Hugo, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.mtv.com/music/the_leak/g_unit/beg_for_mercy/

G-unit nice start, come on with it
poppin them thangs (more murderous sinster gunit sound)
Im so hood (not feelin)
How to Stunt (101) one of the catchier tracks, lyrics 'kay
*bestest *Wanna get to know u (four star song, they didn't even need to spit, banging track. loop)
Groupie love(should not have been after my fav song)
ask somebody(banks sounds good over bs westcoast sound)
*best*Footprints(low budget but i like it sound, track is above average, almost a * * * * * song)
eye for eye ...
Smile (sounds like 21 questions in a higher key)
Baby you got (from Queens or Compton?)
Salute You...
*good*Beg For Mercy (best lyrics, can someone say next single)
*better*Stay G'd Up( like the track)
Lay (are the West Coast Connection or wha-?)

i was hoping this would have a very mixtape feel, instead we get Get Rich Or Die Trying the Remix Album. hate when 50 sings the choruses/love when 50 sings the choruses. this is a tandem he and ja share.sometimes it works, mostly it doesn't. much of 50s appeal is flow and vocal charisma, content isn't a plus. dmx 2002, and we see how good x-man is nowadays. 50 will be yetserday's news real quick. that one dude from memphis has great voice, but wick wick lyrics, what a waste. whats up with the cali beats? and all the gangsta love songs? i remember when 50 had bank's buzz. by the time he comes out he won't have nothin good to say. i miss yayo. fabolous is starting to look like the future, pass the kleenex.

im not buying either record in the store. piracy prevails.
