Drummer & Bassist wanted for the world's worst-ever nonexistent band.

Anyone want to send me 25 minutes of recorded drumming for an band/experiment? I'm not sure that I want to reveal the details of it yet.. Not because it's a stupid idea and it'll suck .. that's a given (and the point, in a way) .. .. All I'll say right now is it's for the concept of "sponteneous non*-musician bands"..

So - a competent drummer would be best .. not too showy, but able to carry a rhythm. And if you don't have drums, that's OK too . I mean, if you're really good at finger-tapping and can do it for ~25 minutes, then record it and send it to me... But full-on drums are what I have in mind, really.

.. Then, I need a bassist too. Or rather, someone to play the low-register rhythms - so any instrument capable of that would be fine... And an ability to sort of play a decent bassline would be good, but you don't have to be good. (Right now I'll settle for "interested".)

It's possible that this could turn into spontaneous live performances in various cities someday, but there's no hope of a world tour because that's antithetical to the idea.

This has something to do with the last 20 seconds of 5:15, Half Japanses records and John Cage's "Indeterminacy" liner notes.

*by non-musician, that is: non-professional or non-semi-professional. Someone who plays along with records alot would be ideal.

Sounds like fun - I can provide you w/drums - but is that 25 min straight??

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

It doesn't have to be straight 25 minutes. It can be broken up. I'd like it to be a new "song" every ~3 minutes (doesn't necesarily have to be timed perfectly..) .. But you can play whatever you want - change tempo, dynamics, style every 3 minutes. They can be slight changes or drastic .. it's up to you - you're the drummer, you've got the lead. (That's where the final 20 seconds of 5:15 come in. Keith Moon owns The Who in that song.) You can make up your own songs or play someone else's.. It's up to you.

But I would like it not to be too broken up.. At least a few "songs" that run together. I hate it when bands stop between songs. But stopping whenever you need to is fine. Also, I'm not looking for perfection.. so there's no such thing as a "bad" part. Nothing needs to be filtered out. Part of the idea is that everything is live and there are no second chances.

I'm beginning to think this would work a lot better live - just so the drummer can react to the bassist and guitarist .. but for now, it's just a proof of concept...

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Half Japanses = Half Japanese. Has nothing to do with that awful band, Japanses.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

OK cool, I'll record this Saturday - I guess email me if you have more things in mind.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I can do the bass... do you want a fluent bassline, or fragments of "songs"? And how will I send it to you? I can fragment a .Wav file with Winzip and send it piece by piece by e-mail or MSN Messenger...

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Hold on for the bass... I want you to play along with dleone's recording... The deal is - you don't listen to it ahead of time - but you play along with it in real time and record it. So I'll send you dleone's part when he's ready... You play whatever you want, and you decide what's appropriate as far as "fitting" with the drums. But the important thing is, you can't "fix" it if you don't like what you played. (You can do multiple takes if you want - as long as you preserve them all.) But you shouldn't be familiar with the drum part - just react to it.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

By the way - if anyone found this thread too late and wants to participate, we can do multiple versions.

Also, if anyone wants to play any other instruments or sing or talk or has lyrics or stories, those will be needed too eventually.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh - and dleone - can you please give 8 beats before you start playing - just to synch the recordings.. ?

Thanks ..

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

sure - before each section or just the beginning?

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mind doing bass (or guitar or play an old Roland analogue poly synth) on any other upcoming versions. You'd have to send me the music as a CD-R though. I presume you'll be recording on PCs somehow?

Rob M (Rob M), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

dleone -

.. Just the beginning...

Rob -
yes this will be CDRs (although "musicians" can send tapes or minidiscs or files if that's all they've got.) You can probably get in on this round. I'm not sure what instrument to have you play yet or at which stage in the recording, but I'll let you know ...

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, Dave. The only part that I'm scared of is the media support part. I guess you could send a cd-r by mail to Portugal, but I would prefer if you sent it on chunks by e-mail or messenger.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I can put it in chunks up on the internet somewhere .. But I'd like it if you could download & reassemble it before playing. (As opposed to playing along with each chunk separately.)

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, of course, I'll assemble it before listening to it.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

google index: hijklmno

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

H to O? ;)

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Hadn't thought of that, actually. Kinda neat!

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a dream of having a metal orchestra once. Something about a pit of 40 guys whose sole purpose is double base drums....and 27 fuckers finger tap soloing at the same time. If my dream were ever realized, we would take the world by storm. And the name of the band:

"20-grit Sandpaper"

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

You had me until the name.

dleone (dleone), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, its never going to happen anyways because its an unrealistic goal and im an unmotivated mofo with 2 jobs and school. I give you permission to run with it. I dont even want royalties...

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry dave, how do I get to Google index: hijklmno?

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

- that's just so I can find this thread again .. If I search ILM for that string, it'll give me this thread. Sorry for the confusion.

But if you feel like searching for something, search Google images for "bert ernie ebert" (Ha!)

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I finished the drums for this. How do I send it?

dleone (dleone), Monday, 10 November 2003 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Great ...

Either CDR via mail (USA) or send/post .mp3s ...

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 10 November 2003 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Or Soulseek

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 10 November 2003 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

What is soulseek? Ive heard this mentioned before...a friend of mine got me the new iggy pop a while back through it...i think.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Monday, 10 November 2003 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

dave225, I'm at work now, but if you log into slsk, look for user dleone. I'm on via my computer at home, and the track "ILM drum track" should be there in a folder under my name. It's a really big file, so I can't really post it somewhere.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 10 November 2003 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know much about how to use Soulseek - but I keep getting "Error trying to get file list" when I search your files.

Your user status is "Away" - I'm not sure if that means you're unavailable or not ..

Any ideas...?

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 10 November 2003 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

who knows - I can send it to you via AIM (just email me your AIM name) when I get home, or if that doesn't work, just email me your address, and I'm mail it on a CDR.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 10 November 2003 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

you can always install msn messenger...

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, Dave, I have now the tracks in my computer. I'm guessing these are Dominique's drum parts. My idea is to burn them into a CD, and record the bass while listening to it. Now, some questions:

- Are all the mp3 separate tracks? Do I need to assemble anything (apart from listening them in order)? I'm going to use a 2-sec gap between tracks when burning the CD, so I need to know if there exists any kind of segue between tracks.

- If I understood correctly, the 1st track begins with 8 drum beats, and I'm supposed to double the last 4, right? Just checking.

If everything's alright, I guess I can do all the recording until the next weekend. Then to find a way to send it back to you.....

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Each mp3 is just a random break.. There shouldn't be any space between the tracks. But if your CD Burner can't burn with no gap between tracks, that's OK - however, you may have trouble playing along with unnatural breaks..

You are correct about the 4 beats ...

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 20 November 2003 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

nine months pass...
hey
