Can't say there's anyone I'm dying to see, but it should be a good time - and will answer the riddle of how many hipsters you can fit on the Queen Mary.

Sam J. (samjeff), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

...before you can sink the boat in good conscience.

(There are a couple of acts I wouldn't mind seeing but overall, eh.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

saturday is an alright day, I'll be at that. sunday is an absolute turd though. looking forward to seeing the shins and daniel johnston. will never beat seeing the boredoms though.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I really wish the Boredoms were back, that was awesome.

Sam J. (samjeff), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe we should rename this thread "let's make the poor fuckers jealous"

/me laughs while shoveling money into a furnace

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh. I'm just going to accompany my girlfriend, who really likes some of the bands (and I'm paying her back in installments).

Sam J. (samjeff), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

(Though last year, with Aphex, Boredoms, and Neil Hagerty, I think it was me twisting *her* arm.)

Sam J. (samjeff), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm just trying to find some valid way of spending all this money that i cannot get rid of.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

How was Modest Mouse? Built to Spill? Did the bands play on the boat somewhere, or on the docks? How many people were there? How was Sunday?

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah! I totally forgot about Modest Mouse. They were pretty good and the stuff they played off of 'Moon and Antartica' was a lot less dour than on the album.

I missed BTS because I wanted to see the Minutemen and Spoon. Glad I did too, because the Fire Marshal shut down the stairs during Spoon and you couldn't get the lower level where they were playing at that point.

re: the stages. The main stage was outside in a mini-park area and that was fenced in, so you have to check in with security to get in and out. Sounds bad, but only took more than 2 or 3 minutes early in the day. The smaller stage was inside the boat. There were three levels and the stage was on the bottom level, so you could see it from the other two levels if you were on the rail. Pretty odd and it made it all the more worthwhile when it was PACKED for the Minutemen duet and when it was EMPTY for Daniel Johnston.

There were not a lot of people there. Definitely enough, but not so many that you couldn't easily get to the front of the stage at any time. As the day went on the crowd grew obviously, but if I had to estimate the peak (during Sonic Youth and Spoon) I would say that it was around 6,000-7,000? I'm poor with estimates, but I can say that without a doubt, it was nowhere near Coachella's numbers and that was great. You could tailgate all day, bring in whatever you wanted and have a great time.

Dunno about Sunday. Rain?

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

sonic youth were tremendous as always, the four new songs were good and they'll get better, devastating "eric's trip", brutal "nature scene" encore. best live rock band in the world. deerhoof and the minutemen duet were really good.

dan (dan), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i missed deerhoof unfortunately.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

If anyone saw James Chance, I'd be interested in hearing about that too.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The Stooges last night - wow. I was fully unprepared for the assault of a shirtless, full-bore Iggy and boys playing all of "Fun House" (including a shred of "L.A. Blues") and several songs from the 1st album ("I Wanna Be Your Dog" TWICE), to a crazed, pogoing mass. They even had that guy Steve McKay playing tenor sax! It was an amazing treat.

The rest was OK. The layout of the outdoor stage was pretty good, while the indoor stage area was exactly like the student center at the world's noisiest college. (I was expecting some sort of ornate art-deco stage with sandalwood floors.) The 3-tier setup was neat; Spoon was really cool, playing down there as people hung off the stairwells and balconies, listening. It was like a cool movie scene.

Sam J. (samjeff), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

it was like bartertown from thunderdome.

Pretty outstanding. I wish I had picked up the box set there.

you must've been standing right behind me with that minutemen picture.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Friday, 14 November 2003 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Great pics, Elvis... thanks a lot. There should be more of this type of thing on Ilxor (photos posted, etc.), for people who would love to go to things that are thousands of miles away (erm, I live in L.A. but couldn't float the ticket price for this particular ho-down).

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a lot more photos here. Pretty much everyone I saw was fantastic, except for the horrid Mars Volta, but fortunately I only had to hear them from backstage.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Great ones of Iggy here (not taken by me - though I was almost this close!)

ARGH!

I'm sorry, that vaguely disturbs. Farmer tan AND buttcrack!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think it's farmer tan as much as the sun shining out of his behind (Iggy's a secret Smiths fan?).

hstencil, Friday, 14 November 2003 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's another great batch of Iggy pics (no crack this time)

Oh, crap. I skipped seeing James Chance when he came to town the week after ATP since I figured he wouldn't be very good...
