Pink - "Try This"

Got this yesterday. Have played it four times today. It sounds like mid-80s Billy Idol, From Elvis In Memphis, or the Chi-Lites, depending what track you're listening to ("Humble Neighborhoods," "Walk Away," and "Catch Me When I'm Sleeping," respectively). You can't hear Tim Armstrong on it anywhere, and the Peaches track is totally ignorable. And she calls some guy a "stupid fuck" for not coming to her show on track 3. This is a great, great album.

i hate you?

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

You can't hear Tim Armstrong on it anywhere

It's already a genius album.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I just hope for her own good that the rest of the album is better than the first single.

Miggie (Miggie), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

With the exception of the second track, it is. If somebody really brilliant is working at Arista, "Humble Neighborhoods" will be the next single, and it will take over the world.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait a minute, wait a minute. Is Linda Perry anywhere on this thing?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"Trouble" is over produced and has too many parts. I don't mind hearing it on the radio because I completely dig Pink's enthusiastic
vocal performance on the track. If I'm not mistaken there's a line in a verse about her fingers being "bejeweled." Of course I have a comical history of mishearing lyrics. In any case, I'm very much anticipating this record.

>Is Linda Perry anywhere on this thing?

She may have worked on a few tracks, but Armstrong was the major collaborator (10 of 14, including the hidden bonus track, which is one of the best things on the disc). None of it sounds like the last record, though. There's none of that weepy diary-entry lyrical tone.

>"Trouble" is over produced and has too many parts.

Agreed, but there's a really great almost-metal guitar sound that I didn't hear when watching the video on MTV. Maybe it was mixed down lower for pop consumption, or maybe the sight of Pink battling to escape her bustier distracted me.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I disagree entirely. The fact that you can't hear Tim Armstrong's influence is too bad, the album could've used a bit of Rancid's bounciness. Humble Neighborhoods is the worst song on the entire album, it's really really bad "dance rock". Trouble is the best track, besides Feel Good Time ofcourse. William Orbit should have produced the entire album. Now it sounds like boring grown up Blues Brothers type soul/rock. With David Paich from Toto on organ. Really. The lyrics are pretty bad.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

There's none of that weepy diary-entry lyrical tone.

That's the best news, yes.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

You can thank Linda Perry for that.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Linda Perry should be shot out of a canon into a roiling vat of tepid dung.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, yeah. Take this as good news or bad, your call: "Feel Good Time" is not on the album.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

>the album could've used a bit of Rancid's bounciness.

Rancid need to be bounced under a moving train. Their most recent single is the worst thing since "Ruby Soho," which was damn near the worst thing ever.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Trouble is the best track, besides Feel Good Time of course

Pity.

Miggie (Miggie), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

(it's on the itunes music store a week early)

maura (maura), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"Feel Good Time" is not on the album.

Well it is on my euroversion...

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

hooray for europe!

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
Man am I behind the curve, this had already been out almost six months! Anyway, I just got it and am slightly disappointed, although a lot of it is good. I think Tim Armstrong's sound is clearly audible, if not in the production style then definately in the melodies. I mean "Trouble" is clearly his. "Waiting for Love" is probably my least favorite; it sounds like big-ballad era Heart. There should have been a Courtney Love duet. This kind of willfully disposable stuff should grab me stronger right away, but I'll give it a few more spins. At the very least, good doing-the-dishes music.

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 7 March 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy crap! Why didn't I let it play last night!! The bonus track is amazing!!!!!! I actually heard it at the Hole in the Wall a couple weeks ago and wondered who it was. I'm floored.

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 7 March 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Linda Perry should be shot out of a canon into a roiling vat of tepid dung.

Wow. I was mad in November, wasn't I. Oh well....it's still a good idea.

P!nk? Time's up, it seems. Thanks for playing.

My Vietnam by Pink

Daddy was a soldier he taught me about freedom
Peace and all the great things that we take
Advantage of
Once I fed the homeless, I'll never forget
I look upon their faces as I treated them with
Respect
And

This is my Vietnam
I'm at war
Life keeps on dropping bombs
And I keep score

Momma was a lunatic, she liked to push my buttons

She said I wasn't good enough, but I guess I
Wasn't trying
Never like school that much, they tried to teach
Me better
But I just wasn't hearing it because I thought I
Was already pretty clever
And

This is my Vietnam
I'm at war
They keeps on dropping bombs
And I keep score

This is my Vietnam
I'm at war
They keep on dropping bombs
And I keep score

What do you expect from me?
What am I not giving you?
What could I do for you to make me OK in your
Eyes?

This is my Vietnam
I'm at war
They keep on dropping bombs
And I keep score

This is my Vietnam
I'm at war
Life keeps on dropping bombs
And I keep score

This is my Vietnam
This is my Vietnam

Just seconds ago, I was thinking about how good it is that Pink seems to have disappeared.

Funnily enough, I was thinking the very same thing. I was in our company bookstore earlier and spotted this album in the "marked down" section.....from four dollars to one! HAHAHA! Try that!, P!nk!
