Roughly akin to my begrudging-but-dogged appreciation for maligned 80's band, the Fixx, I've always had a stubborn-if-lukewarm love for some of Percy Plant's solo work. A truly mixed bag, quality-wise, Plant both renounced and wallowed in his fabled legacy in equal turns, sometimes shunning Zep's big rock bombast in favour of more restrained, modern-sounding material, before eventually returning to the mothership, growing his hair back out and reclaiming his role as the cock-rock frontman prototype. I'd always hoped for a compilation of Plant's more reputable solo singles (notably "Little By Little," "Big Log", "Heaven Knows", "In the Mood", etc.), but went without for some time (I suppose I could've ripped'n'burned my own, but that would've meant a lot of extraneous work). There were also a deplorable amount of clunkers like "Tall Cool One" and...er..well, everything after the punnishingly-titled Now and Zen album. Plant also has the distinction of foisting the worst ever album cover on the world. That being this....

Just rolling down the pike this week comes his new compilation, Sixty Six to Timbuktu, which features many highlights (and lowlights) from his hill'n'valley-ridden solo career (along with an extra disc of 'rareities' that stand much lesser a chance of being played on my stereo). While I applaud being able to spin "Big Log", "Heaven Knows", "Little By Little" and the Honeydripers' "Sea of Love" on one single disc, I lament the absence of "In the Mood," to say nothing the absence of a single track from his first solo album, Pictures at Eleven (though maybe that's a good thing after all, in retrospect).

Also, as great a song as "Heaven Knows" is (to me, anyway) it contains some of the worst lyrics in all of human history.

Prompted by having listened to freakin' Manic Nirvana, off all things. It hasn't aged too well. I didn't even realize this new best-of thingy was coming out until I went to look up some info on him.

His first band (Pictures, Principle, Shaken) was great. Robbie Blunt is a real accomplished guitarist. Loved his tone on those records. Then Plant sacked them and the next three records were populated by a bunch of hacks. Horrible move on his part.

Yeah, it's actually really embarassing. Especially given how well-crafted the first three solo lps were. Like, he seemed to be growing old gracefully, kind of extending the mature sound of In Through the Out Door, then he totally just decided to make really dumb atavistic rock records (and the 80s production sheen only made things worse).

What was his most recent album called? I very nearly bought that...I saw him on VH1 doing a live thing with his new band, and they sounded fucking great. The guitarist was not at all wanky, the keyboard player was using some really modern tasteful sounds, and the drummer was Clive Deemer, who did Portishead's stuff (he's amazing, and sounded really classic with Plant).

Pictures of Eleven is really a pretty good album; I can't believe they didn't include anything from it on the best-of. "Burning Down One Side" and "Pledge Pin" are both worthy (and I'm pretty sure they both got regular radio play back in the day).

Hmmm... Percy solo, let's see... putting aside "Walking into Clarksdale" (90% of which I adore)...

While "FofN" does have a dreadful cover (and the last track "Network News" is an appallingly bad song), the rest of the album probably represents the best collection of songs amongst his solo albums. "Down to the Sea", "Come into my life", "Calling to you" - all good.

"Tie Dye on the Highway" from "Manic Nirvana" would rock like a behemoth if it wasn't for that godawful 80s drum sound... Elsewhere, I'd go for "I cried" and "Nirvana". "Hurting Kind" though goes straight in the bin alongside "Tall cool one".

"Now and Zen" I've never been over the moon about... I mean "Dance on my own" for heaven's sake! Oh dear. It does have "Ship of Fools" though, a solid track, and a few other decent tunes, but Phil Johnstone's influence is a little too pervasive in places. "White clean and neat" is one song I have always had a soft spot for.

"Shaken 'n Stirred"... hmmm, never really been able to get my head around this one. Plant goes new wave synth pop? The video for "Little by Little" is a bit of a trip.

"The Principle of Moments" - some good tracks, eg. "Big Log", "In the mood". Great videos for both of them also.

"Pictures at Eleven" - what? No "Slow dancer" on the new comp? They must be kidding! I have a bootleg somewhere with a cracking live version.

I never heard that Coverdale/Page record. I bet I'll probably hear it before I die, though. Then again you never know. I've gotta believe there are at least one or two well-constructed riffs on there somewhere; it's Page, after all. About half of Outrider was actually really good.

Man, this track-listing for the Plant best-of is pretty wack. How the heck can you leave off "In the Mood"? And they should have put "Far Post" on there ("Big Log" B-side, and a good tune in its own right), instead of like 5 (?!) tracks from Fate of Nations.

Still I'm pretty curious to hear that early track recorded with Alexis Korner.

Completely correct, Steve. For some reason, I inexplicably deleted "iron". I'm losing my mind. In any event, it's still an abjectly crap lyric. That particular track is littered with similarly cringe-worthy couplets.

I think Dreamland is quite good, though it's not something I play all the time. Very creative and expressive arrangements of folk and blues songs, mostly. Very solid band, with a variety of instruments, including strings, some electronics, guitar noise, and Arabian instruments. "Skip's Song" is good almost in a LZ III way and is my favourite. "Song to the Siren" is beautiful. I like the versions of "Morning Dew" and "One More Cup of Coffee" a lot. He actually manages to do something surprising and scary with "Hey Joe".

I totally loved "Tie Dye to the Highway" at the time (Grade 6/7). I really liked "Hurting Kind" too. I also remember "Liar's Dance" being good. Some of the rest too. I remember writing a review of Manic Nirvana for a Gr 7 English assignment and saying that it was pretty good but leaves the listener wanting a little more.

I think the coolest thing about his 80s solo career was how he reinvented his persona as this button-down shirt-wearing English gentleman artiste, sort of a hippie Peter Gabriel.

whatever the quality of his solo music, mr. plant always gave props to alternative/indie/whatever bands that he liked (and almost all of which sounded rather unlike led zeppelin) -- the cure and depeche mode (maybe even the pixies?) come to mind from memory, though i am sure that there are others. for being an exception to the "dinosaurs" who acted as if punk/new wave never happened, plant deserves respect.

and yes, some of his solo stuff is pretty good ... i always liked "in the mood," "little by little," and "heaven knows" (though the lyrics are sorta c-grade bryan ferry [OF ALL PEOPLE FOR MR. DOES-ANYONE-REMEMBER-LAUGHTER TO TRY TO IMITATE COULD YOU SEE THE FAVOR BEING RECIPROCATED?!]). the honeydrippers "sea of love" remake is silly, but it lead me to the original version so it's all good in the end (plus the video was prime mid-eighties cheese and the chick therein looked like a high-school teacher i really crushed on big time).

I just played Dreamland, having just picked it up in the used bin. It's really good! Nice arrangements and song selection; I agreee with Sundar above. On a whilm I bought Shaken 'n' Stirrled a few hours ago for dirt cheap...to call it strange would be an understatement. How does an album sound simultaneously dated (the keyb sound) and like nothing else (samples atop polyrhythms and weirdly textured guitar). Was he listening to Big Audio Dynamite?

I'll have more to write when I've absorbed it, but this proves that the man was NOT coasting (I checked this album's sales, just as a by-the-way; it's his lowest-selling '80s album, and the Zep fans didn't forgive him until he made Now & Zen.

Big Log is the biggest WTf moment of the past few weeks. Guitarist tone is so awful, his pull-offs amateur. Whole song sounds like some lounge effort. Drums and pads are almost modern sounding. "...and the coming of night time" ok
