Jay Z - The Black Album C/D?

Kanye proves he is king. Eminem proves he cannot produce more than one song. Classic most definitely.

D Aziz (esquire1983), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

It's pretty good.

d k (d k), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh. My. God. Has culture really accelerated to this speed already?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick, have you been living under a rock for the last 15 minutes?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to the toilet and it leaked and everyone heard it.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The Black Album, that is. Not my dick.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

that's the funniest thing i've ever read!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha.

But yeah, Eminem can produce more than one song...his beat on this album is excellent.

ddrake, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael Ng (Mike Ng), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It deserves a classic just because of "Lucifer".

Miggie (Miggie), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

so how many people have put out a Black Album now? Are there more Black Albums than White Albums?

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.genesis-publications.com/gallery/putland/marc.jpg

Miggie (Miggie), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Whooops! Wrong thread, people, sorry...

Miggie (Miggie), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

haha!

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

it's lucifer!

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

so how many people have put out a Black Album now?

Metallica, Prince, The Damned...

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The eminem beat would not be on there had Jay Z not wanted to pull in a few more bucks through the draw of eminem's name. What i want to know is how could Primo not come up with a single beat that was suitable for this album, it's not like every song on here is amazing.

D Aziz (esquire1983), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, and why no Quincy Jones either?

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard Phil Spector wanted to work with him too

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

has anyone noticed that jay-z is a shitty, lazy, bone-headed lyricist? i think it's the eminem track where he rhymes "sense" with "sense" about 25 times in a row.

shut up, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah absolutely Jay Z has no talent whatsoever. Him and that no-mark stevie wonder guy.

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 05:51 (twenty-one years ago)

has anyone noticed that jay-z is a shitty, lazy, bone-headed lyricist? i think it's the eminem track where he rhymes "sense" with "sense" about 25 times in a row.

Just making sure...this was sarcastic right?

ddrake, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 06:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Just finished listening to it; v. good, unsurprisingly. For me it really kicks into gear with "The Threat" and after that all is bliss. I think the reason that Dizzee Rascal might not get anywhere in America could be that "99 Reasons" sorta trumps the "Fix Up Look Sharp" move pretty well, doesn't it? (And John D. proven right again, Eminem is such a fucking goth these days. Nicely done on his part.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 06:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the reason that Dizzee Rascal might not get anywhere in America could be that "99 Reasons" sorta trumps the "Fix Up Look Sharp" move pretty well, doesn't it?

aaah aaah I was going to say this and you got there first. Now you look better than me!

*sulks*

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 06:39 (twenty-one years ago)

No, but really, the two songs are VERY similar, the tempos are almost identical.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 06:39 (twenty-one years ago)

But Dizzee DOES have the ineffableness of Billy Squier's direct vocals. If that's the correct word to use.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 06:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"Public Service Announcement" sounds at home next to MURS and Mr. Lif "Sneak Preview."

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Dizzee Rascal will never catch on in the states because it's boring, and the only boring music they like here is that shit known as "frat rock" and what appears on CMTV.

D Aziz (esquire1983), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

well not the ONLY stuff, but you get the idea.

D Aziz (esquire1983), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah yes, emo is so much more interesting than dizzee rascal, silly of us brits not to notice.

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

which track was it that eminem did?

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

track 8, the best one

sean., Wednesday, 5 November 2003 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

wuzzit called (my iTunes have named them automatically)

Lucifer is pretty great.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Just finished listening to it; v. good, unsurprisingly.

Replace v good with mediocre and I feel the same way. I think it's just *wish washy*.

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

moment of clarity?

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

It just sounds totally generic. The beats are hot and he's just as hot as ever. It's just so pedestrian.

The best plus the best plus the best plus the best plus the best. The best beats, the best rhymes, the best cars to brag about, the best girl to brag about, the best the best the best the best the best life of all time. Adds up to. Really boring.

I'm not sure if that sounds like, 'He sucks because he's too rich.' I think it's very clear what I mean. I don't mean that. Most rappers get better as they get richer. It's not about being rich. Or, it is, a bit. I'm not sure how that works into how I feel about it. No! It doesn't work into it at all. It's just really pedestrian. That's all I mean. It doesn't have anything to do with rhyming about Maybachs instead of GS 400s.

d k (d k), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the sound at the start of 'Justify My Thug' and I think the title is kind of funny.

d k (d k), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

he's had so many great single verses or guest verses this year (crazy in love, flip flop rock, it's on from the state prop cd, what we do, his s carter mix tape..) that hearing him on whole songs is a bit too much now. he sounds really half hearted on most of it, maybe that's just the recording i have though (wishful thinking). it's like, would you really want to listen to an entire ludacris cd, or big gipp cd, or lil flip cd? personally i prefer the excitement of an unexpected guest appearance with these mcs cos that's what they do best and i think jay z since blueprint 2 has just spread himself about too much doing bare remixes and guest verses all over to point where it's just enough to hear him go "young!" and then you're satisfied. as for the beats well em, kanye west, just blaze, neptunes, timbaland and buchannans have made much better one's this year.

sean., Wednesday, 5 November 2003 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

so, is it 'moment of clarity' that em produced, or what?

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes!

d k (d k), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

very easy to hear, huh? pretty moody, but also v. generic.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone what jazz trumpet song is sampled on Encore?

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 6 November 2003 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The haters will fall away with time...except for those who hate CHange CLothes and Go. Its good, but its so average compared to the greatness of everything else.

ddrake, Thursday, 6 November 2003 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The haters will fall away with time...

Yes, clearly they lack perspective. Mm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 November 2003 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I can see why people hate Change Clothes... it's kind of light. but I like it a lot. Nice melody.

I'd say better than Blueprint, overall. The tracks I thought were average are growing fast. The tracks I thought were great are now really great. Top notch lyrically.

So yeah, boring. The best MC gets all the best producers and drops another great album. People think the Yankees suck if they only get to the World Series, too.

bugged out, Thursday, 6 November 2003 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

he sounds really half hearted on most of it

I've only heard two songs (My Name Is Hov & What More Can I Say) but he sounds pretty intense on those (to me). Whereas before he was relaxed sometimes verging on disinterested

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 6 November 2003 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i feel that the yankees comparison is apt. but on the other hand hotness is hotness. what if the nu-roc roster formed like voltron into a wu-style collective, but glitzier, w/ free, beans, peedi crakk -- aren't MOP signed to rocafella nowadays??-- w/ kanye and just blaze on the boards?

fskfhldk, Thursday, 6 November 2003 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

the state property: chain gang cd is a bit like that. it's probably my favourite roc album this year actually.

sean., Thursday, 6 November 2003 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate it when ILM discussion of a record is played out weeks before I even get to hear it.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

ODB is signed to the roc, as is Twista and MOP.

ddrake, Thursday, 6 November 2003 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Imagine 'Lucifer' with M.O.P. Beans and Peedie and Freeway on 'Justify My Thug.' Foxy on '99 Problems.' Ma$e on 'Change Clothes.' Nas on 'Encore.'

d k (d k), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Personally, I think it's rather silly of you all to assume that Jay, Em, Rubin, etc. *haven't* heard the Streets and Dizzee. That people who are obsessed with combing the world for the freshest beats might notice what's going on on the exotic island of Britain does not exactly seem outside of the realm of the possible. Or probable.

flightsatdusk (flightsatdusk), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

(err, that is to say that I think it's not only possible, but in fact probable that the people in question are aware of what's going on in UK hip hop, in case that isn't obvious from my atrocious syntax)

flightsatdusk (flightsatdusk), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think any of those three people are really obsessed with combing the world for the freshest beats. Jay listens to Talib and Common and De La Soul. Eminem is the boringest producer ever. And Rick Rubin isn't exactly about freshness. Are there any fresh beats on this album?

d k (d k), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Jay has a great history of bringing in unknown producers, actually. Noone knew Kanye West when he did half the Blueprint. 9th Wonder is still relatively unknown, but after his slot on the Black Album you can bet he'll be getting a lot more work.

The fallacy in the Brit-hop presumption is not that Jay-Z et al would be listening, but that the beats are fresh...

bugged out, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, I'll concede that "fresh" was probably stretching things a bit, but I still think it's ridiculous to assume that Jay, et. al. aren't paying attention to UK hiphop. if it's on our radar, i think it's rather likely that it's on the radars of people who are in the business of making hiphop records...

flightsatdusk (flightsatdusk), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Why would American hip-hop people be interested in jacking beats from a poor copy of their own music? ("No, you see, it's not hip-hop!" "Well, we don't have a name for it yet, mate.") Really, no one in America cares. Apart from a small percentage of music critics and a certain class of hipster.

d k (d k), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course no-one in America cares. No-one in America has heard of Dizzee et al in the first place. That has little to do with quality, and everything to do with marketing budgets.

bugged out, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Right. Same thing happened with Robbie Williams.

d k (d k), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a simple difference. Robbie Williams sucks. Dizzee Rascal is good. Not the second coming, but not a poor copy either.

bugged out, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

wshat of the fact that these new producers (the one who did " my first song" and buchanans on "what more can i say') are just aping the sound put forth by just blaze and kanye?? what more can i say has those kinda flailing drums followed by insistent beat a la "what we do" or "oh boy" or "thru the wire" --- anyone else think that this is the case??

fdsfsdlk, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, you can argue that for the Buchanans, but not really on "My First Song." Kanye and Just Blaze didn't originate the style they are known for, either...cats were doing this stuff in the early 90s, its really just a modern update of that Pete Rock sound, horns and Motown basslines and all.

ddrake, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

>>>okay so i just heard "change clothes" and saw the video - i can understand why so many will be hating on it, but it could be a lot worse for a neptunes track after some of those tired ones on clones - i just think the timing is sort of overkill

OTM. i saw the video this morning. thought to myself 'jesus another video with pharell in it.' that plus the beats makes it hard to differentiate it with everything else on mtv right now.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

dizzee rascal supported jay-z in london didn't he?

robin (robin), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

change clothes isn't great but it's been very good at getting stuck in my head. i found that the way to get it out is to get the chorus of milkshake stuck in your head instead.

scissors (Honda), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

nothing on google for the dizzee/jay thing, but i'm sure i read it mentioned somewhere before

thom west (thom w), Thursday, 13 November 2003 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Jay-Z do an interview on the evening news tonight talking about his plans to retire, and it seemed like he placed a lot of emphasis on the words "solo artist" - like he kept saying that he felt like he had done all he could do as a "solo artist". So this made me wonder, maybe he's planning on starting a group.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 13 November 2003 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

hiphopsite.com is reporting some last minute changes to the album - apparently there'll be 2 bonus tracks, including a dre production. don't know how, uh, founded this is.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 13 November 2003 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

well, didn't Jay say something when he was previewing the album for the press along the lines of that he was about to fly out to LA finish up a track with Dre? I guess they got it done, but too late to make it part of the full package.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 13 November 2003 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

hiphopsite.com is reporting some last minute changes to the album - apparently there'll be 2 bonus tracks, including a dre production. don't know how, uh, founded this is.

I read that too, and usually hiphopsite is very reliable...but someone I know got the album, and it was exactly the same as the bootleg.

ddrake, Thursday, 13 November 2003 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there anyone out there that you like besides Dre from OutKast? Do you even listen to rap?

I like fucking Coldplay and shit. And I'm still on Jill Scott's whole album. And I like John Mayer, surprisingly. I think that's fresh, I'll fuck wth him.

d k (d k), Friday, 14 November 2003 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

well that's depressing (where's it from, d k?) but hey anyone actually cop the real album and, if so, can you tell me if there are bonus tracks? it probably won't be out here for at least a week.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 14 November 2003 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

what's depressing, that he likes Coldplay? the man has taste! i think this proves again that all smart people like Coldplay haha. anyway, this is from hiphopmusic.com, from the message board:

okay..i see you guys are discussing this "fade to black" that jay-z supposedly has dropped to be his final album. i work for the promotions department here at universal records. im not an a&r, or anything special. i am a runner(basically a "gopher"). but in my everyday work, i sometimes get into casual conversations with record label honchos, a&r's, etc...i will not profess to be the biggest jay-z fan..but i thought the following would be interesting to know.."The Black Album" is technically not jay-z's last album...sometime next summer (the word around here is mid-july)..jigga will drop another album that will consist of some his tighter collabos, unreleased material, and 4 to 5 new songs..in the vein of NAS "lost tapes" album. the album is tenatively titled "THE ENCORE: roc-a-fella records presents FEATURE PRESENTATION"..the marketing ploy will be, dame dash releases this without jigga's approval, because he felt the public demanded it. so on and yadda yadda..i was given a tentative tracklist from one of the a&r's in the office. this could be total bullshit for all i know..but it sounds very legit and has actually came from more than 3 reliable sources at the def jam offices in new york and an a&r at the los angeles office.

There's no bonus tracks.

llamaskool, Friday, 14 November 2003 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

It's from the new XXL with him on the cover.

You always said you hated the term "rapper" and you didn't like being known as one.

Oooh, yeah.

What did you mean by that?

"Rapper" is like what we're doing. It's what's happening right now in music. People are just rapping. People aren't even making albums anymore, they're making this type of song. They're making the "club song," the "girl song" and the "hardcore" song. Rap is supposed to be about bucking the system, being that voice, you know what I'm saying? Being what's going against everything.

...

The gaime ain't even fresh. It ain't fresh. That's gotta be the best word to use for it-- fresh. It ain't hot. I love it when other people make hot albums and shit like that. I mean, I love it. I'm loving the Dre [from OutKast] CD right now.

And you used to say you didn't even "get" OutKast.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"99 Problems", of all songs, is blowing up on the radio here -- they played it 3 and a half times in the space of an hour on the same station. i kinda wish Jay had the balls to release it as a single.

and man, d k, quite trifling with sub-trifean "he likes rock music" = "he is a traitor to rap" bullshit.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 15 November 2003 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I doubt they'd have a tracklisting of a greatest hits/rarities already worked out a year ahead of time.

"Dirt Off Your Shoulders" is supposed to be the second single.

adam west (adamwest), Saturday, 15 November 2003 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, Jay said probably "Dirt" on 106 & Park tonight.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 15 November 2003 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

did anyone see 106 & park then? i thought it was great that they put g-unit on thurday. but i'm still not feeling this album on the whole. (though the last 2/5 is pretty damn great. [everything from "99 problems" on.])

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 15 November 2003 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

actually re-reading that it's obvious that al did.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 15 November 2003 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

damn I like totally missed this thread and only just heard the album today.
Oh well...
I thought the backing was generally weak.

Eminem just remade that 8 Mile track,
Neptunes tracks are both Gay
Timbaland is siply a rehash of stuff he's done sooo many tiems beofre

the 99 reasons tracks is kinda cool. - more punk than Run DMC ever were ;)

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The Eminem track is by far the worst. Other than that, everything from "Dirt Off Your Shoulders" on is good to great. (I don't know what else Timbaland has done, so if it's a rehash, I couldn't tell - and still great)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 06:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The Timbaland track grew on me a bunch. Once it becomes a single, I think appreciation for it will rise.

The Eminem track is one of my favorites. The lyrics are incredible. Can we look past the fact that its a standard Eminem beat in terms of mood an to the fact that it is a great improvement over previous Eminem beats in terms of execution? Never mind the fact that, once again, lyrically this is one motherfucker of a track.

ddrake, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

em's track sounds like a triton run thru a sega genesis. but it does bang!

that said, this album is exactly what i expected. like the blue print, it gets an 8.7. or maybe an 8.5 or something. remember before the blue print and after reasonable doubt? the tone was like "buy this album while sucking my dick, or else!" the blueprints kind of backed off with that, but this album has the tone of reasonable doubt. jay-z is being an artist again and really trying instead of just talking (albeit formally flawless), though with much more maturity than in 96.

i am listening to kid 606 while i write this.

if i were listening to the black album i would probably get excited about kanye west's solo album, dropping in january. the title is supposed to be "college dropout." and if you think about it, the reason he's so good is probably because he's so much smarter than everyone in rap. maybe even jay-z. i really want another ex-crack dealer to reference rainer maria rilke. this probably is never going to happen. maybe kanye west will fantasize about a crack-dealing past and also reference rilke. or maybe he will produce rainer maria. but i digress. this is getting wishy-washy. maybe whimsical. i hate myself and i want to die.

godbless jay-z.

asfdzxc (asfdzxc), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Definitely the best since Reasonable Doubt. This album covers every sound Jay did and adds some new ones. 'Encore' is Kanye's best beat to date. I think the end of 'My 1st Song' is like the end of a movie. Thats some sad shit - you can hear how serious he is about this. I think this might really be Jay-Z's last record. I hope it is too, just so that looking back twenty years from now, hip-hop will have at least one artist who quit when they should have; didn't release a bunch of albums after being washed-up. The scary thing is he's STILL getting better on the mic - his flows and such. He's so smooth sometimes that he just sounds like he's sitting there talking to you instead of rapping. "...I came, I saw, I conquered..." who else could say this and... just retire??? The greatest of all time indeed.

BOW TIE BEFORE I DIE NUCGA

Last summer Jay-Z took the first vacation of his life. "Went to the south of France, Sardinia, Corsica, Monte Carlo. For a month I didn't do anything," he says. "We saw some things. We lived life. And that pretty much sealed the retirement." The use of we is as close as Jay-Z comes to talking about his relationship with Beyonce, but he says he sees a future in which he has kids ("the biggest thing missing in my life"), runs Roc-A-Fella and maybe even takes over as president of his corporate music parent, Universal Records. "I really want to make music that lasts. People in the business are chasing hot records, but a hot record is only hot for six months," he says. "Sing me the lyrics to The Thong Song," he challenges.

The problem is that Jay-Z may not be able to outrun his legacy. He begins any criticism of the state of rap with "You know, I love hip-hop ..." but he believes that the numerous rappers behind him on the ladder lack his style and have turned rap into a much crasser art form. Jay-Z has always had fairly catholic tastes, but he now finds himself listening more to John Mayer and Coldplay than to rap. "There's not a bunch of hip-hop artists that you can relate to once you hit 30," he says. "I think, unfortunately, rap music is made to destroy itself. You have to be fresh and sell to an audience that's 16 to 25. They demand that you 'keep it hood,' 'keep it real.'" He says this sadly, but he can't deny responsibility. Today's records show: rap artists are doing it his way.

I've been reasessing this in the car lately, and it hit me like a ton of bricks this morning that Jay Z really is the greatest of all time.
