Deadbeat vs. Stephen Beaupre: It's a Crackhaus Thing

New on Onitor, distributed by Kompakt. Microfunk glitch w/occasional house keyboards and Akufen-ish cut-up things thrown in to leaven it out a bit. It SHREDS. On one listen, potentially as good as the Pantytec album from last year.

Discuss.

the new gustavo lamas on that label is fantastic as well. i will have to seek this one out.

I was going to start a thread on this one, but first I wanted to think through why I like it so much more than Akufen's My Way (not sure yet.) Great record, fanastic basslines.

The basslines are ace! Weird repeats of notes that wait a beat or two longer to change than intuition would dictate...very Matthew Dear.

I saw Crackhaus play with Akufen a few months ago and they pretty much wiped the floor with him.

Andy is correct--Akufen sounded really sick of his My Way stuff and mostly played fairly rote tech-whatever, while Crackhaus had it ALL goin' on.

great. just what I need, another genius German label. I have abstained from throwing on Crackhaus so far, but the Sid Dithers & Johny Larue 2nd City ep is a solid.

I'm listening to this now. Seems to take most of its cues from Akufen (apparently Stephane and Marc Leclair are friends), but it somehow manages not to be derivative. Has a big plump sound with fat sweeps; on first listen this seems more floor-friendly than Akufen.

So, anyone have much to say about Deadbeat's new album?

Wildlife Documentaries is among one of the closest to perfection of all albums I've heard, but I haven't really been big on his subsequent straight-up dub/reggae stuff. I'm really loving his dancefloor dubstep/techno stuff of the last year, though, am thus am curious as to what it's like.

Have heard the new album in company of others but haven't got it myself yet. Sounds pretty good: he's going for more a basic channel tribute vibe on this one (less dancehall influences than on the previous album) but he's such a good producer that you don't tend to mind.

I saw him live last weekend and he was amazing, totally slayed.

I regret skipping over (the first 2/3rds) of his set at the last Mutek. The way that man's music can fill a room is mesmerizing.

mehlt, Thursday, 12 February 2009 04:38 (sixteen years ago)

Not sure if it was the same basic set but when i saw him the first half (where he concentrated on his dancehall-ish sound) was the strongest part.

I got it, it's a doozy.

This dude (Deadbeat) is just too much.

How do you mean? Are you talking about Roots and Wire?

mmmm, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 21:38 (sixteen years ago)

I just mean in general, I love this dude. Although I should say Roots and Wire is great, a bit of a sleeper hit, but if you let the subtlety fade away it destroys.

Seen him live 4 times, and each set is better than the last. When I last saw him at Mutek, he played a lot of stuff I presume is unreleased, with a (female, non dub) vocalist, that sounded really great.

And The Heckler is without a doubt one of the best tracks of last year.

'Something Borrowed Something Blue' the best thing he's done I reckon.
