geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 06:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Yeah the Rapture, I forgot. They have that one song where the drums go "Bump-Tah, Bump-Tah, Bump, Bah-Boomboomboom (x4) TickatickatickatickPAHtickatickatickaBumptickatickaBumpPAHtickatickaticka"

"Olio" or somthing like that.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Circle X!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Totally second Ex Models. That album is the greatest.

Jason J, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the "New York Eye and Ear Control"(lousy, sloppy theft of title) compilation on Matador has Circle X, Steve Fisk, Cop Shoot Cop, other grubby/arty NY-ers. Try looking for Blurt, Ut, Bogshed, "I Hate The Pop Group" compilation bootleg...

When I think of "angular post-punk" I think of things like Devo, Pere Ubu, Wire, the Fall, stuff like that. But I guess Jesus Lizard goes with your list.

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

what makes something 'angular'?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

If you like Shellac and McLusky, there is a good chance you might like these bands.

Jesus Lizard
Six Finger Satillite
Brainiac
Don Caballero
Unwound
Mule

earlnash, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

angular = dance in jerky movements with bent elbows...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

angular = bass and drums in mid-up tempo synch with hi hat action, and guitars doing lots of harsh sounding 2 note chords in a flangy way

mig, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

James White and the Blacks-Contort Yourself.

Polvo. Kerosene 454 too, but that's more on the DC hardcore tip.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 6 November 2003 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

shudder to think's "pony express record" has angles on top of angles and good songs too.

dan (dan), Friday, 7 November 2003 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, i saw Ex Models last night for the fourth time and was giddy and blown away. Also another kinda interesting band opening for them was the Dance Disaster Movement... an Orange County/Long Beach two piece that's a drummer/electronics and keyboardist/weirdo moonwalking freako dressed in white who shouts a lot in le Guy Picciatto stylee.

Theoretical Girls

Darth Nader, Friday, 7 November 2003 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"angular post-punk" makess me think of Josef K, but based on your list I'd suggest A Minor Forest, June of '44 and Rodan. Maybe the Crownhate Ruin.

Jeremy (Jeremy), Friday, 7 November 2003 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe the actual definition of "angular" is in the chord structure and note selection..."angular" usually refers to a prevelence of intervals of a fourth. But I like it when reviewers use it to refer to anything that sounds remotely dissonant.

ddrake, Friday, 7 November 2003 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Public Image Ltd. "Second Edition". Has that come up yet?

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Friday, 7 November 2003 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

the scissor girls, the first gang of four album, everything but the last record by the minutemen, the ex, dog faced hermans (although the clumsy politicking sometimes rubs), the first stretchheads record, all bogshed but especially step on it, the shrubs, upsilon acrux (super sharp hyper math prog instrumentals that rock hard), phantomsmasher (glitched up ambient grindcore) , harry pussy, harry pussy, harry pussy, nomeansno, ruins, koenji hyakkei, korekyojin, harry pussy, beefheart's mirror man & lick my decals off baby, the flying luttenbachers etc etc

bob snoom, Friday, 7 November 2003 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

and Nillson.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 7 November 2003 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a great L.A. band called The Mae Shi that I heard on KXLU and picked up their EP... very interesting post-punk with great melodies. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they started getting bigger...

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, and oxbow. wreck were good in their day, too.
"junkyard" by the birthday party?

bob snoom, Saturday, 8 November 2003 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks for the ans to my q.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 8 November 2003 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice! Thanks for so many recommendations. Alot of this stuff is what made me ask the question, alot of it I've never heard of.

> "angular" usually refers to a prevelence of intervals of a fourth.

This sounds right but I'm asking more about angular rhythm structure kind of stuff. Minimal, herky-jerky kind of not quite math stuff. Semantics and what not.

Shaun (shaun), Sunday, 9 November 2003 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

bob, is all that stuff really angular, or were you answering geeta ?

george gosset (gegoss), Sunday, 9 November 2003 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

angular as the corners off a cylinder?

bob snoom, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

ditto on mae-shi.
