So. Have any of you gone over to jam with a guy for the first time, and you met him once before, at which point his extensive knowledge'collection of gear made you think that he was a musical monster

whuh?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 06:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, like, a guy who who meet at a BBQ thru a friend, and you guys talk about gear for a long time and he talks about his "jazz influences" and how he's into Jeff Beck and stuff, and then you go to jam with him, and you're in awe of all his stuff, and then he just wants to play some Tool ripoff shit.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

You lead an interesting life, Producto.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 06:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I just have interesting friends who golf with "Dropped-D" guys. "Dropped-D" guys with guitar/keyboard/recording tools collections that make you envious.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 07:05 (twenty-two years ago)

somehow i can't see a "dropped d" guy having the sort of gear i'd be in awe of

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, here's my deal:

I got a Fender 40th Annv. Strat and a Korg MS2000. That's the "pro" gear I have. Other than that I'm working with 2 Squier strats, an Ibanez GAX70, a DeArmond Jetstar SPC, a Danelectro Innuendo (which the FX don't work on), a Fender P-bass lyte (which needs work), a Squier 5-string P-bass, a Yamaha PSR-225 (one of those $130, get it for a kid's piano lessons deals) a Johnson J-Station, the Korg Electribe EA-1 and ES-1, and one of those TASCAM tape 4-tracks you can get for $225 new nowadays (and like 15 stompboxes).

This dude has 2 ADATs and this controller thingy going to a computer with some kinda Pro-Tools thing, 3 Gibson LPs, a few custom-made strat type things, a few nice basses, and a few custom-made acoustic guitars with really awesome abalone inlays, and also one of those 88-key Alesis Q. keyboards with the weighted keys that costs a grand. And he has a drum set and it's all mic-ed up.

But instead up being all funky crazy with it, he just does a bunch of Tool ripoff shit.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

People who talk about gear and influences are collectors, not players.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

ive got a huge nob

sean., Wednesday, 5 November 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

prove it

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

come round and jam with me sometime, i promise i won't drop the d

sean., Wednesday, 5 November 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Quite the reverse, I went to play with a bunch of guys I'd met regularly at the pub, only to find out that they're all freakin' brilliant, despite "just wanting a jam, we don't really know what we're doing".

But then I suck.

Sasha (sgh), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

'Tool rip=off shit'? That's better than most of the fucks I know who own a warehouse full of gear and don't even touch it. "(Whine) I just need one more piece and then I'll have the whole set-up I want, but until then I don't know wh-u-u-u-u-t to do!!!" There seems to be an inverse law here as to amount-gear-owned/ability or motivation to use it! DQ: "You've had that thing for 3 years and haven't even put a battery in it! Can I use it for a month?" ShitAss: "Cost me £250. I'll 'lease' it to you for..." (As for 'dropped-D', I know more than one person who wouldn't downtune cuz they "couldn't figure out how to get it back in tune ever again afterward". Fair enough, altho why they answered my 'stoner-metal players needed' ad I don't know)

dave q, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Dropped D guy is bad, but is "Jimi Hendrix cover guy" worse?

Last guy I played with wouldn't stop playing Jimi and Stevie Ray songs. I mean, he had no interest at all in playing ANYTHING original.

What's the point?

Sicily, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Gear sucks.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

don't make me drop the d on you sicily.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! Gygax...You Tool head, you.

I think playing in dropped D is kinda fun sometimes (not in a "metal" way though), but what's even more fun is playing in a straight up open D. Especially on a shitty guitar.

Dirty blues!

Sicily, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

slint's "good morning captain", pajo is in open D
also the descendent's "sour grapes".

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Grebtest tunings ever. Though I'm not quite sure about the uptuning he does. Especially the E-to-A.. ouch!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't bear to tune up more than 3 steps

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

nick drake has some good tunings but hardly the best ever (fahey, jansch, et al).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Me neither...

I usually downtune to the required notes if possible or start with a "normal" guitar tuning, but down a step to D, G, C, F, A, D and work the new tuning from there. If that makes sense...

Too many broken strings with tuning up.

Sicily (Sicily), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

uh, what other tunings should I not be using, lest some techie nerd scoff at me?

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 6 November 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd more likely scoff at someone who only uses standard tuning

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 6 November 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

well, you missed your chance to scoff at me then, cuz it was only recently that I learned how to deal with any other tunings. But that's what I get for learning everything on my own I guess.

for what it's worth C6 is probably my current favorite.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 6 November 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

shakey mo... don't make me drop the d on you too.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 6 November 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I tried Dropped D a few times but I got nowhere with it - Open D was much more to my liking...

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 6 November 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Tuning up can warp the guitar's neck because of too much tension.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 6 November 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

which is bad if you have a straight-through neck like my rickenbacker for instance. set aside your bizarro tuning experiments for bolt-ons

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 6 November 2003 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

wait... surfacenoise, were you formerly electricsoundofjim..? You're from New Zealand, correct?

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 6 November 2003 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

yes and no. from australia.

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 6 November 2003 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah. Damn. I'm gonna be in New Zealand for a few weeks and was hoping someone could hook me up with places to see some shows. Alas.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 6 November 2003 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I like jazz. I like Tool. I play in dropped-D. And I'm a gearhead. Did you all really not think it could be done?? Cunts.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 6 November 2003 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah. Damn. I'm gonna be in New Zealand for a few weeks and was hoping someone could hook me up with places to see some shows. Alas.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 6 November 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

you have a keyboard too though.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 6 November 2003 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

And you've made records that are liked by people other than dropped d guys.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 6 November 2003 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 6 November 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)
