Daft Punk - "Rollin' & Scratchin'"

WOW I don't think I ever made it past the two minute mark of this song before! Who knew all those screamy squelchy bits were in there?

It's still a little static and boring, though.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay Dan, it's about time you came around! That and "Rock 'N Roll" are my favorite cuts! I think "RnR" gets even more gloriously ridiculous. But then I'm just a noize boy.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

If they chopped off the first 2 minutes of "Rollin' & Scratchin'" I would never have complained about it in the first place.

I can't believe I'd forgotten how fantastic "Teachers" is!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

well, dan, maybe you just need to hear the live version on "Alive 1997"

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

my capitulation to daft punk = the vokodered "doc-tor dre is in the haaauuuus" in "Teachers".
(another great vocodered shout-out - the intro to the first LFO's Frequencies)

etc, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, If you like the squealin' you need to get ahold of Neil Landstrumm's first album on Peacefrog. It is nothing but tracky 909 workouts with squealing pro-one grooves over the top.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Same thing happened to me recently - I was always like, hm. 'rollin' & scratchin' - wasn't that was a single or something?

Then, I actually put it on about two months ago: immediately, how the fuck did I miss that? I can't even remember this being played out in clubs...

Definitely draws out the PUNK element.

Michael Dieter, Thursday, 6 November 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

when my friend started going to dj stores to buy vinyl, he'd sing 'teachers' to himself so he would know which artists to look for 12's from. pretty good method. paul johnson...lil louis...etc etc etc...

tylero, Thursday, 6 November 2003 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

that's fantastic!

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 6 November 2003 06:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"Musique"'s also got some nice hard-hitting filter freakouts towards the end. I wish they'd put out of more of that noisier/more abrasive stuff

Elliot (Elliot), Thursday, 6 November 2003 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Get the live album Dan. For the love of god get the live album.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 November 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i need the live album too! i had the Daft Club downloads once but they're on a dusty cdr somewhere i can't be arsed to search

i still say 'Rollin' & Scratchin' and 'Rock n' Roll' are the most boring tracks on 'Homework' but that's me - i like 'High Fidelity's bad jazz funky workout, 'Indo Silver Club's bouncy warped rollerdisco vibe and 'Alive's sheer relentless drive sense of self more.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 6 November 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Everybdoy OTM. 'Teachers' (and esp the Dre part) rocks hard. And 'Alive' is pretty fantastic too

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Thursday, 6 November 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve, I think that's kind of my point; the rigid, static march of the first 2:30 of "Rollin' & Scratchin'" always put me off to the point where I would either skip the track or take the CD out of the machine altogether. Yesterday I made myself actually sit through it and realized WOAH the last 4 minutes of the song is actually great! So, that drawn-out go-nowhere intro really messes things up if you aren't mixing into another track.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 November 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

the build up in 'Phoenix' was always a bit too long for me too. but then there's the Basement Jaxx mix, heh heh

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 6 November 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing about "Phoenix" is that it's a swing beat buildup and due to my personal preferences, I will always give a swing beat that goes on forever without payoff more slack that a straight martial beat that goes on forever with no payoff.

None of this explains why I think The Chems' "It Doesn't Matter" is one of the greatest songs ever, though. (Actually, that intro isn't nearly as long plust they've got that vocal sample stuttering over it, so there's enough to keep me satisfied until they completely lose their shit, so maybe that's not the best example.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 November 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

'It Doesn't Matter' I didn't really like until I saw and heard it live, then it was very much like whoa

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

How about the live trancey-dub version of "Setting Sun"???? Man I adore the Chems.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

very probably my favourite live act ever (fuck stage presence eh?) - not seen them for a while now but judging by the mp3 i downloaded of one of their shows from last Summer they still got it.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

the opening Come With Us/Music:Response/Block Rockin Beats/Song To The Siren melange is predictable and inevitable but it still kicks all kinds of arsola

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I love how all of the _Surrender_ tracks except for "Hey Girl Hey Boy" and "Out Of Control" are all flat and lifeless on record but you can HEAR how they'd be massively HUGE live.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

flat and lifeless?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I really dislike _Surrender_. I completely gave up on the Chems after it came out, and then they put out "Galaxy Bounce" and "It Came From Afrika" and I had to go crawling back to them all sheepish and repentant.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Surrender is great. Prob. not as good as the previous two but a damn sight better than 'Come With Us'

oh wait this is a Daft Punk thread. have any of you seen Interstellar 5555 yet?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve you're letting your memory of Come With Us be clouded by "The Test"!

I tend to think they're about equal.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 6 November 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, "The Test" is actually kind of great.

There's no way _Surrender_ can be a damn sight better than _Come With Us_ when the latter has "It Came From Afrika", "Star Guitar", "Hoops", "Come With Us", and "Galaxy Bounce".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 November 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i love rollin' and scratchin',its my favourite daft punk track
it works really well in techno sets...
and ronan is completely otm about the live album,if you like daft punk at all you'll love it

robin (robin), Thursday, 6 November 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I for one LOVE "The Test."

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 7 November 2003 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Man does that "Teachers" song sound like Ween.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 7 November 2003 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I suspect practically everyone had this sort of thing happen with "Rollin' & Scratchin'." Hard as hell pounding the first two minutes until slowly but eventually the warmest of all possible throat-clearing tenor synth washes over everything. I never used to get past them, but even the first two minutes of "R&S" have that great, rotating alarm clock counterpoint thing going on.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 7 November 2003 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

ok i think Surrender and Come With Us are pretty even after all (my memory is clouded more by the fact that Surrender was my favourite album of '99 save for Remedy)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 7 November 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)
