calstars (calstars), Thursday, 6 November 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Butterfly, aka Ishmael, aka Cherrywine just released a live instrument album that despite the reviews on amg, i really like, a lot

Blowout Comb is still one of my top 10 albums of all time.

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 6 November 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

oh man, I really wanna hear that Cherrywine album - was there a vinyl release (fingers crossed?)

Ditto big ups to Blowout Comb. Masterpiece of a record.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 6 November 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just figuring out the beat from "For Corners", the last track on BC a few hours ago on dee drums. It's kinda fucked up, the timing of how it loops back on itself. Anybody know what was sampled?

I live to serve!! or i'm bored. one or the other.

scott seward, Thursday, 6 November 2003 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool thanks! That must be a somewhat recent submission cause I know I checked for it there before.

Hey wait. I know the Skull Snaps beat and that ain't it.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 6 November 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

allegedly Mecca/Ladybug has a solo record out, and IIRC Doodlebug had/maybe still has a big funk band in the D.C. area.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 6 November 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Blowout Comb is a great great album.

Ladybug should definetely be doing something. She was amazing. The best of the three.

Debito (Debito), Thursday, 6 November 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

that's definitely skull snaps

ron (ron), Thursday, 6 November 2003 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 6 November 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Cherrywine is good.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 November 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, she's dressed up like a Ladybug, that's not so weird.

http://img321.imageshack.us/img321/5541/jcope5nr.jpg

But what does it sound like?

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

The Ladybug album is pretty good: I described it in this week's Voice Choices previews as a "streetwise kid sister to Lauryn Hill's Miseducation." She's playing S.O.B.'s in NYC tonight, if anyone's curious.

Had never heard the H rumor before, but I interviewed her two years ago and she seemed perfectly, entirely together, if a bit indifferent to the business of the business.

Joe McCombs, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

saw the Digable reunion show a few months ago. all of the Ladybug tracks were terrible. awful. they were really boring sub-lauryn hill, sub-jill scott neo soul tracks. and she couldn't hit any notes she was trying for.

she has a site with soundclips, http://www.ladybugmecca.com/ but i don't have speakers on this computer

Jah Pastafari (jaxon), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Uh, answering the really old question up'air:

I was just figuring out the beat from "For Corners", the last track on BC a few hours ago on dee drums. It's kinda fucked up, the timing of how it loops back on itself. Anybody know what was sampled?

Shuggie Otis's "Aht Uh Mi Hed"

PappaWheelie B.C., Wednesday, 14 September 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

the ladybug is BEYOND AWFUL

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Really, Pappa? I'm gonna have to go and listen to both of them cause my memory is playing two different patterns.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Shit...I think it's Island Letter now that I think about it, but yeah, mos def Shuggie Otis.

PappaWheelie B.C., Wednesday, 14 September 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

It is Island Letter that's sampled, but just the guitar intro, not the drums.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 27 October 2015 21:28 (ten years ago)

Surprised cause iirc the last time they did a reunion show, Ladybug was terrible to work with and the other two were like "never doing this again."

The Reverend, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 16:15 (ten years ago)

But now they're money hungry coat-tail riding has beens and happy to say 'yes sir' while Ish is basking in critical glory.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 16:59 (ten years ago)

Ish is basking in critical glory?

Really?

austinato (Austin), Wednesday, 28 October 2015 17:29 (ten years ago)

yeah

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 17:30 (ten years ago)

Haha, okay.

austinato (Austin), Wednesday, 28 October 2015 17:33 (ten years ago)

I didn't see any bad reviews for the Shabazz Palaces stuff, that def generated a lot of critical buzz

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 17:34 (ten years ago)

Fair enough.

austinato (Austin), Wednesday, 28 October 2015 17:44 (ten years ago)

But now they're money hungry coat-tail riding has beens and happy to say 'yes sir' while Ish is basking in critical glory.

Last time they attempted a reunion was 2011, after Black Up was out, so not sure what's changed since then. They still had to cancel because Ladybug fucked it up.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 19:41 (ten years ago)

Yeah, me neither. I wish I was gonna be here for the show, actually. I just typed that response because it popped into my head and I thought it was funny. I'm sure they're happy, well adjusted individuals who are excited to rekindle their old magic.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 20:26 (ten years ago)

nine months pass...

Saw 'em for free Saturday night in the rain in Brooklyn's Prospect park Bandshell with Camp Lo opening. A bit of the hour and a half set dragged, but I enjoyed myself. They have a good, funky band--drummer; percussionist; bass; guitarist & keyboard player. They all looked happy together.

curmudgeon, Monday, 1 August 2016 17:22 (nine years ago)

three weeks pass...

as if anyone thought the band wouldn't drop out to let the crowd take over for 'we be to rap what key be to lock', but still so satisfying

5 piece band backing them up, very sparing use of the original sample arrangements made it all very loose and live. new arrangement of 'black ego' & added 'jungle boogie' riff for '9th wonder' should come out somewhere.
