Can you portray movie characters in music videos? J. Lo/Flash Dance Wierd AL

I heard the creators or who ever from Flash Dance wanted some sort of payment for using their idea.
Did J. Lo get sued for that or did they need permission to do that?
What about Wierd Al, I know there is some law that protects parody, but did he need permission to make his videos or songs?

Any lawyers out there?
