Billy Talent - "Try Honesty"

What's the deal with this? I heard it in a shoe store once and kinda liked it, the nasal raspy voice, the call and answer, the rhythm but haven't heard it since. Anyone into it?

Big here in Canada. I'm not a big fan. It's largely generic pop punk, irritating singer, they are making small waves, but I don't quite understand it.

They have that one brown guy with the pompadour, which is cool, but the nasal voice that you like just drives me insane. The song has a somewhat indie-like jagged stop-and-go structure which is keeping them from being lumped in with canadian pop punk like Sum 41, which is fortunate, because Sum 41 are way better than this. Did you see Muchmusic Xposed with Sum 41? Those guys are great in real life: some of the most clearheaded, realistic opinions about the music industry I've ever witnessed, whereas most of the interviews I've seen on Much with fringe artists don't even register.

Typical Fuse material, but it's got a decent hook. Hate that guitarist's hair, though.

I reviewed the album for Blender (and they kept my Cinderella references)! "Try Honesty" is easily the best song on the album. It's just warmed over At The Drive In for the most part.

before 1998 or 1997, if you sang like that. you were probably just the drummer in the band.

yeah, pretty dull. no Flashlight Brown, that's for sure!

Funeral For a Friend is better.

It's a very catchy song. I am listening to it now actually and have been since..uh..yesterday! I love the voice and the style...so I guess I'm looking at it from a biased POV!

"The Ex" rules too! Don't tell me you prefer "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" to this, Anthony.

(Also enjoying: Blink 182 - "I Miss You" [sort of a sparser-Pumpkins thing], the guitars and beats in Yellowcard - "Ocean Avenue". And the new Pilate hit is probably my favourite Radiohead ripoff.)

I really don't remember "The Ex" but I'll check it out again sometime soon. "I Miss You" is great possibly BECAUSE of the goofy lyrics and faux-cockney shit - I'd probably break down crying if they didn't include some absurdity. I was almost worried that Simple Plan had released a song I enjoyed until I found out it was this Yellowcard group.

For some reason I confuse them w/Biffy Clyro which is even worse.

Oh My God!!!!!
Please Don't Tell Me Billy Talent Are Actually Becoming Famous
I Saw Them Live for $0.92 (Thats Right 92 Cents)
At Irving Plaza in NYC with A Completely Retarded Band Called Story Of The Year & Jet. And Man They Stunk Horribly
The Singer is A Whiny Little Asshole and He Got Mad and Left The Stage Before The Last Song Ended Because The Whole Crowd Boo'd Them

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Saturday, 24 April 2004 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, Anthony, "The Ex" takes faux-Cockney to a nouveau-level.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 24 April 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I knew Billy Talent was all about faux-cockney. In my review I noted that I found it cutes when they said "lies" as if it rhymed with "joys."

Billy Talent, [...] I Saw [...] Them Live At Irving Plaza in NYC with [...] Story Of The Year & Jet.

Worst...line-up...ever.

I still love this first Billy Talent album. It's kind of ridiculous, but it is the twistiest pop-punk I've ever heard. They have a great way of subverting little melodies where you don't expect it.

It certainly is punk of the Church of England to think that way (tangenttangent), Tuesday, 28 June 2016 08:48 (nine years ago)

Generally dislike pop punk but always had a soft spot for this song. Big chorus.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Tuesday, 28 June 2016 10:54 (nine years ago)
