It doesn't happen too often, or does it?

Pussy Galore - Einstürzende Neubauten's "Yu Gung"
Big Black - Kraftwerk's "The Model"
that Trio medley the Jesus Lizard did, and so forth. What else?

Damian (Damian), Thursday, 6 November 2003 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess you can't call "Planet Rock" a cover version, can you?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 6 November 2003 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, perhaps, but I guess I am interested in German bands being sampled too.

Damian (Damian), Thursday, 6 November 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Zoot Woman - The Model
Calla, Loop - Mother Sky
Thin White Rope - Yoo Doo right

willem (willem), Thursday, 6 November 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

SF Seals - Faust's "Flashback Caruso"
Q Burns Abstract Message - Faust's "Jennifer"

Damian (Damian), Thursday, 6 November 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The Philistines Jr. have covered Blumfeld's "Draussen auf Kaution"; the Walkabouts covered Blumfeld's "So Lebe Ich" as "That's How I Live".

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 6 November 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Besides TWR, Masaki Batoh of Ghost also covered Yoo Doo Right on one of his solo records, then Damon & Naomi did it with Batoh & Kurihara on the b-side of a 7".

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 6 November 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Autechre - Neu!'s "Weissensee"
the Walkabouts - Neu!'s "Leb' Wohl"

Damian (Damian), Thursday, 6 November 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Yngwie Malmsteen - Scorpions "Sails of Charon"

dave q, Thursday, 6 November 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

So there are covers of Scorpions songs! Perfect! But I digress.

Damian (Damian), Thursday, 6 November 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

there's plenny of Kraftwerk covers out there. i've done one meself.

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 6 November 2003 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Ectogram did a cover of all or most of The Faust Tapes, as I think was mentioned on a thread a while back. Covering the canonically cool bands is a bit obvious, though. Some Berlin cabaret or Die Toten Hosen is a bit more challenging, innit?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 6 November 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I was awaiting your response, esoj. :)

How easy is it to get hold of that Ectogram thing? We wantss it.

Damian (Damian), Thursday, 6 November 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

also there is a cover of Can's "i want more" by GBVG (underground lovers side project) but does it count that the lyrics are all in english?

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 6 November 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I believe so.

Damian (Damian), Thursday, 6 November 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

.....but all of Can's lyrics are in English - apart from the Japanese bits

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 6 November 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't think of any more covers beyond the canonically cool bands, but even so, any covers of them are welcome.

the Divine Comedy (live) - "Radio-Activity"
Gary Lucas - "Autobahn"
Siouxsie and the Banshees - "Hall Of Mirrors"
OMD - "Neon Lights"

Damian (Damian), Thursday, 6 November 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

it is to my genuine surprise that i can't think of more K'werk covers than that (other than really obscure ones)

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 6 November 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

There are a number of Kraftwerk tribute albums (there's a Japanese one, one in Slovenian which has Laibach on it) and then there's that Balanescu Quartet thing I've never heard which has a few arrangements of Kraftwerk songs.

Damian (Damian), Thursday, 6 November 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the album you really need:

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 6 November 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to ask about Accept too, given the Scorpions mention...

Damian (Damian), Thursday, 6 November 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

And there's tribute CDs for Kreator, Sodom and Destruction too.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 6 November 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Gate did an amazing meta-cover of Faust's "Jennifer" on the 'Mono Lake' CD.
Jesus & Mary Chain did Can's "Mushroom" on a b-side somewhere out there... (Getting the lyrics fabulously wrong.)

jwd, Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

chris whitley also did a cover of kraftwerk's the model. and there is a phantastic cover of neu!'s weissensee by autechre. but that's an instrumental, does that count?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

How about the zillions of Brecht/Weill covers out there?

Maxwell von Bismarck (maxwell von bismarck), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Th' Faith Healers also did "Mother Sky"
and
Love Tractor also recorded "Neon Lights"
and
Snakefinger also reworked "The Model"

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

After The Fire - Falco's "Der Kommissar"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 6 November 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

luna, "neon lights"

Annouschka (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 6 November 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

'Autechre - Neu!'s "Weissensee"'

I've never heard this one, what is it like and when did Ae make it?

earlnash, Thursday, 6 November 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Hanover Fist were Canadian, Felcher, so that = I don't know. 51st state thing, maybe.

jazz odysseus, Thursday, 6 November 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Turbonegro/Accept = 'Will & Grace'/'Cruising'

dave q, Thursday, 6 November 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

don't forget señor coconut's kraftwerk festdisc!

cyndy cyn, Thursday, 6 November 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Judging by the 50 or so Kraftwerk covers that are out there... urf!
Throw in all the metalbands that are arguably just rewriting Helloween songs and "EXCITING NEW EXPERIMENTAL ROCK BANDS" who aren't even rewriting Halleluwah. Then throw in everyone covering "Rock me Amadeus" because it's the finest song on this side of "It's a long way to Tipperary" (which was originally called "The holocaust never happened, ach")

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Thursday, 6 November 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never heard this one, what is it like and when did Ae make it?

Well, there's actually a whole Neu tribute album that came out some years back -- this is one of the tracks from it. Haven't listened to it in a while...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 November 2003 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

barbara manning - "marcus leid" (fantastic cover of amon duul 2)

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 7 November 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

A French band called Kat Onoma covered "Radioactivity", The Cardigans did "Das Modell" recently.
Eric Polaire covers "Eisbar" by Grauzone, in a english translation : "Ice bear" (I recommend the Shakedown Dub version of thaht track)

Sami (Sami), Friday, 7 November 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

New Waver did a whole album of Kraftwerk covers.

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 7 November 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

was this in addition to the Kraftworks comp?

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 7 November 2003 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Barbara Manning (well, S.F. Seals, actually) also did a nice cover of Faust's "Flashback Caruso".

Then there's the seventeen hour long (or thereabouts) output which constitutes the Neu! tribute band that is the despicable early career of the wretched Stereolab (as opposed to the despicable Sergio Mendez tribute years of latter day wretched Stereolab).

sabala, Friday, 7 November 2003 07:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael Rother, after seeing Stereolab live, allegedly said: "It is like I am listening to myself." And yeah, I mentioned that cover of "Flashback Caruso" upthread.

Damian (Damian), Friday, 7 November 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

*cries*

Falco was Austrian.

Does the old Ariston advert count as a Trio cover?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 7 November 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that can count - there's also an ad for Sakata rice crackers in Australia and NZ that uses Da Da Da. Stereolab insults also make-a me cry.

Damian (Damian), Friday, 7 November 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

that "Flashback Caruso" cover was done by the Somerville Players (featuring Barbara Manning of course)

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 7 November 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

nine months pass...
The Members also recorded "The Model."

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Gary Lucas - Aguirre (as in Popol Vuh)

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)
