Strokes Residency on Conan: Musical Nightmare?

And I thought Conan O'Brien had actual taste.

As quoted on NME:

CHAT ROOM ON FIRE!

THE STROKES have kicked off a month-long residency on an American chat show.

Last night (November 4) marked the first of four performances the band will perform in November on a popular US late night talk show, 'Late Night with Conan O’Brien', in promotion of their latest LP, 'Room On Fire'.

The programme's host, O’Brien, triumphantly declared November "Strokes month" before the group played new album track 'Reptilia' to the tiny New York studio audience.

Lead singer Julian Casablancas, whose past US television appearances included performances in which he’s tripped and fallen over amps, appeared to be in top form, clutching the microphone while garbling song lyrics in classic Strokes style.

One word: why?

a whole MONTH?
tiny New York studio audience?
maybe they're only playing between songs?
and also, I guess this means they won't be touring?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 6 November 2003 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Because enough of Talk-Show Format! Now you can Talk and Rock and Chew Gum at the same time! and it still does not lose the taste! Another "notch on the bedpost overnight sensation" for Conan!

jazz odysseus, Thursday, 6 November 2003 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

to piss off very easily piss-offable people, which they seem to be excelling at

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 6 November 2003 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

SO I CAN SEE THEM PERFORM WITHOUT HAVING TO SHELL OUT THE CASH

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 6 November 2003 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

(short vers.) The Strokes = tasteful old gum

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 6 November 2003 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

How are they not going to run out of songs?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 6 November 2003 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"the first of four performances", hello?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 6 November 2003 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

(which I think means "one Strokes performance a week", which is sort of a "monthlong residency" if you wanna fudge things)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 6 November 2003 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I also apologize for ending a sentence with "hello?".

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 6 November 2003 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

How are they not going to run out of songs?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 6 November 2003 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it's just every tuesday night

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 6 November 2003 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps they'll cover one of those bands they sound exactly like, such as Television or the Velvet Underground

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 6 November 2003 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

it would be pretty funny if the took the Max Weinberg 7's place for a week.

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 6 November 2003 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Huckleberry Answer = Max Weinberg drum solos

jazz odysseus, Thursday, 6 November 2003 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

haha me l3rn to reeeeid 1 day

what nickalicious and mike tyson have in common (nickalicious), Thursday, 6 November 2003 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the Strokes.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 6 November 2003 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Nickalicious Answer = Mike Tyson drum solos prolong "School of Rock"-taste of old gum concert

jazz odysseus, Thursday, 6 November 2003 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Hucklberry, is
that Conan O'Brien with
Journey's Steve Perry??

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 6 November 2003 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

that would seem to be the case

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 6 November 2003 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

and also, I guess this means they won't be touring?

Huckleberry, read on and weep:

The same evening the band played a ‘secret’ gig at the New York Bowery Ballroom. Members of the band’s ‘Alone, Together’ fan club were invited down to see an intimate performance as something of a thank you for their support. At the show the band played a mix of both albums, but focused on newer material.

The Strokes wrap their US tour next week before preparing for their European tour in December, which includes two nights at London's Alexandra Palace on December 5 and 6.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 6 November 2003 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe they'll do one of their performances claymation-style!

anyway, why would anyone object to this?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 6 November 2003 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

because things are radically different when a band doing the exact same things other bands often do is a band you dislike

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 6 November 2003 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

they did this with the white stripes

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 6 November 2003 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

you can't stop the shining

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 6 November 2003 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

but there are bands i don't like on conan all the time! who cares?!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 6 November 2003 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah-i liked it when jack ended a song by walking over to conans desk, placed his guitar flat on the desk & then played some more slide

ke[hm, Thursday, 6 November 2003 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
this looks like an appropriate thread to remind people that the strokes are tonight's musical guest on SNL. although if you live in nyc, you've already seen the posters plastered all over downtown...

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 22 January 2006 02:18 (nineteen years ago)

New York needs to be told about the Strokes and/or SNL?

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 22 January 2006 02:50 (nineteen years ago)

are there any good songs on the new strokes record?

jimmy cooper junior, Sunday, 22 January 2006 02:52 (nineteen years ago)

New York needs to be told about the Strokes and/or SNL?

it's a busy town. we forget.

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 22 January 2006 02:54 (nineteen years ago)

They look really awful on the cover of SPIN. It's the only time I've seen Julian look the best. Fab's got some creepy moustache, Nikolai Fraiture's gone amish and Valenzi seems to think he's Steve Tyler. Hammond looks like a spin on that old Kids In The Hall Joke - "and this is what Peter Buck would look like if he freaked out and got a perm."

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 22 January 2006 03:06 (nineteen years ago)

The nice part of me hopes they play "You Only Live Once" second, but the mean part hopes they play "Electricityscape."

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 22 January 2006 03:07 (nineteen years ago)

This is a fucking retarded idea with no possible good outcome.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Sunday, 22 January 2006 03:36 (nineteen years ago)

I did not notice - I have been blinded by love monkey posters.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Sunday, 22 January 2006 04:05 (nineteen years ago)

UGH WHY ISN'T SNL DEAD YET

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 22 January 2006 04:46 (nineteen years ago)

they should can the writers and just get assorted UCB members to stand up there and be funny every week.

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 22 January 2006 04:47 (nineteen years ago)

classic performance! those adenoidal high notes really make the song.

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 22 January 2006 05:16 (nineteen years ago)

Three months on (approx), I'm still not feeling "Juicebox" (or whatever that song is called) in any way.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 22 January 2006 05:16 (nineteen years ago)

i'm feeling it very much.

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 22 January 2006 05:17 (nineteen years ago)

I actually think he's got a terrific midrange, his croony stuff, but the ahem "high notes" are poor

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Sunday, 22 January 2006 05:25 (nineteen years ago)

I can't get around the thudding bassline and Julian's strained screaming. And I know that playing "spot the reference" in Strokes song is sooo 2001, but that bassline (actually, the entire song) reminds me of Blondie's "Underground Girl", which isn't exactly their finest moment.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 22 January 2006 05:37 (nineteen years ago)

the song is like an alternate-reality appetite for destruction where billy idol and an on-key jeffrey lee pierce are singing lead.

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 22 January 2006 05:44 (nineteen years ago)

i guess i could have just typed "velvet revolver" instead of all that.

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 22 January 2006 05:48 (nineteen years ago)

To my ears, the Strokes' guitar lines are too sparse to evoke anything like GNR. Maybe that's where your "alternate reality" comes in?

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 22 January 2006 05:53 (nineteen years ago)

The second song was fucking great -- a lot like their first two albums, though (not a bad thing).

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 22 January 2006 05:54 (nineteen years ago)

one without slash, where izzy's rhythm guitar is more prominent?

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 22 January 2006 05:55 (nineteen years ago)

I got really annoyed by their New York Magazine cover feature -- it almost seemed like the subtext was "Come on, why don't more people like them?"

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 22 January 2006 06:22 (nineteen years ago)

The second song was fucking great -- a lot like their first two albums, though (not a bad thing).

I thought that might be the case with the first verse -- then I realized that it was every bit as piss boring as the previous song. Total disappointment.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 22 January 2006 06:23 (nineteen years ago)

I don't dislike them, but does anyone really LOVE them?

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 22 January 2006 06:28 (nineteen years ago)

Well, "Juicebox" is my favourite Strokes song so far (which isn't necessarily a spectacular achievement but I like it fine). It's always reminded me more of In Utero-era Nirvana than anything else, which is a good thing. During tonight's performance I was reminded a tiny bit of Unknown Pleasures, maybe just because of how his voice sounds on some of the verse bits. I can sort of see the G 'n' R thing wrt the drawn-out "coooold".

xpost

Sundar (sundar), Sunday, 22 January 2006 06:32 (nineteen years ago)

(xpost) i don't love them, but i think they're really good at what they do and i'm always interested to hear what they're up to.

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 22 January 2006 06:35 (nineteen years ago)

first impressions (which i'm listening to now) is more of a production record than a songs record, but that's cool. i like how everything sounds, even if it all meanders a bit more than a strokes release should.
