Oh, and "Daytona 500" by Ghostface if you're talking bass guitars as well. Check it out anyway, it's awesome.

DESTROY: BDP's "Dope Beat" which samples AC/DC

oops (Oops), Friday, 7 November 2003 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Scribe "Stand Up", but it's from NZ so probably no-one's heard it. You should! It's great!

search: Run-D.M.C., "Rock Box," "King of Rock," "Walk This Way." They started this shit, and in some ways still did it best.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 7 November 2003 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

One of the two versions of "Phonkie Melodia" off that first Mexakinz LP has a glorious screaming guitar sample all over it. But I can't remember which one, sorry.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 7 November 2003 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

No mention of Public Enemy? You're all high.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 7 November 2003 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Non Phixion - Rock Stars
RJD2 - True Confessions

Mil, Friday, 7 November 2003 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

No mention of Public Enemy? You're all high.

Damn straight: "Bring The Noise" with Anthrax is fab.

Also, 2 Live Crew's "Fuck Shop" and Saint Etienne's "Filthy", for very differing reasons I guess.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 7 November 2003 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

new kingdom's "paradise don't come cheap" album sounds like funkadelic meets the butthole surfers or black sabbath doing isaac hayes numbers

bob snoom, Friday, 7 November 2003 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"No Sleep Til Brooklyn"!!!! That had a SOLO even!

dave q, Friday, 7 November 2003 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Schoolly-D, the amazingly appropriately titled "No More Rock and Roll"!

dave q, Friday, 7 November 2003 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

(also "Signifying Rapper" - which was (not-)sampled over "Kashmir" [ie they used live gtrs] ten years before Puff Daddy!)(I liked the sequencing on 'Smoke Some Kill' - "We Don't Rock, We Rap"/"Signifying Rapper"/"No More Rock and Roll" !!!)

dave q, Friday, 7 November 2003 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Outkast - 'Bust'

Flyboy (Flyboy), Friday, 7 November 2003 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Brothers Are Gonna Work It Out by Public Enemy.

I heard a rumor once that that wanky heavy metal solo sample was from ex-Kiss man Vinnie Vincent's Invasion. Does anyone know it that's true?

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 7 November 2003 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

the guitar in 'brothers gonna work it out' is from prince's 'let's go crazy'

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 7 November 2003 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

minna (minna), Friday, 7 November 2003 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

WAAAAAAAY to many recent examples to list (hip-hop my fave place to hear guitar now) but MUST mention:

Nappy Roots - "Awnaw Hell No"

50 Cent - "In Da Club"

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 7 November 2003 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

NWA and Eazy E had their own guitar player named Stan.

Talib Kweli - Soul Rebels

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 7 November 2003 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd rather listen to All About The Benjimins (rock remix) than any other song that Puffy/Diddy has been associated with (even though it is a B.I.G. track)

fred burrows, Friday, 7 November 2003 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Search the fuck outta: Talib Kweli "Rush" & Non-Phixion "The CIA's Still Trying to Kill Me"

TS: sampling guitar riffs vs. guitars

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 7 November 2003 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

In the non-distorted geetars dept. a search could be recommended towards:

TCQ's "Jam" among like a billion jams (geetarist Spanky = da sheeyit)
The Roots' "What They Do" & "You Don't See Us"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 7 November 2003 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

>>search: Run-D.M.C., "Rock Box," "King of Rock," "Walk This Way." They started this shit, and in some ways still did it best. <<

"Rock Box" was best of those; "Can You Rock It Like This" was better than "King of Rock." And Adventure ("Phantazee Eyesland") and Lightnin Bolt with Jimi Hendrix ("Doriella Du Fontaine") started the shit even before Run DMC did. As did Aerosmith, obviously. And wasn't Public Enemy's most metal song "She Watch Channel Zero"? Maybe I'm wrong. I wonder how hard the Gettovetts album is to find these days; that was Rammelzee's big metal move. Best metal rap of the '90s was almost definitely "Saturday Night Fever" by Lordz of Brookyln, at least until Kid Rock's *Devil Without a Cause,* which I suppose doesn't count any more. Best recent meta-rap I can think of was "Rock N Roll Ass Nigga" or whatever it was called by Trick Daddy, but I'm doubtlessly forgetting some, and as the "Cadillacs on 22s"s fan among others above pointed out, "guitars" = a lot more than just "metal."

chuck, Friday, 7 November 2003 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, that Trick Daddy song may or may not be "meta-rap"; I meant to say, though, that it was metal-rap (as you may have already deduced.)

chuck, Friday, 7 November 2003 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Jay and R. Kelly's "Fiesta" plus the whole Freeway album, almost.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 7 November 2003 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Search KMD for excellent use of mellow funk/ 60s Soul guitars esp. "Nitty Gritty"

Matt--no, the "No Sleep" solo was played by Slayer's Kerry King

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 8 November 2003 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, check that new MARK RONSON album. it's dope, and has a really nice early run-dmc/beasties rockin production aesthetic!

donkeyho-tee, Saturday, 8 November 2003 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"She Watch Channel Zero" uses Slayer's "Angel of Death" -- Kerry King again. PE, Beastie Boys and Slayer were all on Def Jam by then.

PE's "Sophisticated Bitch" uses an original guitar by Vernon Reid from Living Colour.

But what's that 80s track built on loops from "Whole Lotta Love" and "Purple Haze"?

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Saturday, 8 November 2003 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard a song (don't know the title) by the JVC Crew, it had a nice garage rock-y feel to it.

"pump that bass" original concept
"stet troop 88" stetsasonic (except it's beatboxed by wise, which makes it even better than real guitars)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Sunday, 9 November 2003 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

argh computer crashed just as I was about to post. quick recap:

"Superthug", "We At It Again" by Tim&Mag, "Speedballin'" by OutKast, "Welcome To The Terrordome", "Hey Papi" by Jay-Z (Timbo prod), "4-Alarm Blaze" by M.O.P. w/Jay-Z and uhmm... Teflon? Samples Eye of the bleddy Tiger!

hmm... uh, the "Southern Fried Intro" from new Luda record uses several Isaac Hayes samples to pretty brutal effect. fantastic. lots of Dr. Dre could probably fit here too - I always liked this really moody guitar that comes in during one of Em's verses on "Forgot About Dre". "My Muzik" by Knoc-turn'al (typing that name is terror), Kanye West prod I think - it's pretty trashy, which is exactly why i love it. "My Tone" by Bubba sparxxx as well. grumble, I had a lot more than this before. selah. :-/!

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Sunday, 9 November 2003 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)
