amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 7 November 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

it is a boring list someone please post a more eccentric one

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 7 November 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

in descending order of preference it'd be something like

1 telstar
2 something i've got to tell you
3 just like eddie
4 have i the right
5 hey there stranger

the rest

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 7 November 2003 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"i take it that we're through" has some passages that don't work, the chorus is undeveloped... but the sound of it is amazing, the carnival organ and fuzzbox

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 7 November 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Telstar
Have I the Right (for its 'shouty' quality)
The Joemeek MQ1 compressor...I've just got one installed in my music PC, but haven't actually worked out how to use it yet...

why is d k in love with me again?

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 7 November 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

also everyone who doesn't post to this thread is a rotten egg (fact)

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 7 November 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"have i the right" has those huge "drums" which were actually bandmembers stomping on meek's stairwell

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 7 November 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I can listen to "Have I The Right" forever.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 7 November 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

you'd develop tinnitus

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 7 November 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i just bought 'the alchemist of pop'. can anyone provide a link to marcello's article on church of me?

the tornados: love and fury
honeycombs: love in tokyo

Myron Kosloff, Saturday, 8 November 2003 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

awesome

"dumb head" is scary

but it's not much different from the original except if i recall correctly the drums are stupid overmiked

amateur!st (amateurist), Saturday, 8 November 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

His version of Dumb Head pisses all over Ginny Arnell's version.. That heavy bass synth sound gets me every time..

Are there any more Gunilla Thorn tracks apart from the two on the 'lets go' compilation?

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 8 November 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

doo do do doo d-do d-do doo!! his version ownz

i hear a new world is one of the best songs ever but the chipmunk voices drive me up the wall :(

jones (actual), Saturday, 8 November 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-but they're not chipmunks, they're moonpeople (or something)

joni, Saturday, 8 November 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i think they are "saroos"

amateur!st (amateurist), Saturday, 8 November 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I've even heard ten of his productions. What I've heard is good though, particularly the production work.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 9 November 2003 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

well that's what he's famous for, he was a pioneer (of production techniques, of independent production and distribution) *and* a total eccentric. apparently he did write songs after a fashion, even though anyone hearing his demos will immediately notice that he seems completely tone-deaf. his erstwhile partner geoff goddard did write some great tunes, including "telstar" and "tribute to buddy holly."

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 9 November 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
the glenda collins ones are my favourites i think

but, opinion seems to be divided on geoff goddards sky men, was it pitched up too much? some say too novelty, others dont like the alien voices.

i like sky men a lot, but, i do wonder, if the vocals hadnt been pitched up quite so much...

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 13 January 2005 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

It might have been Goddard's West Country twang, noticeable even when speeded up - "me an' moi dahhr-lin'" - which in itself provides a link between ye olde Englishe ffolk song tradition and the imagined future circa 1962.

Oh, and for Joan Vich, here's a link to my Meek offering.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 13 January 2005 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Meek's stuff is just phenomenal isn't it. I mean really, really, great. Virtually all of it!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 13 January 2005 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

You know what's coming up next on Popular, don't you, Dr C? Ewing had better be bloomin' nice about it... ;-)

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 13 January 2005 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

His plaque on Holloway Road is constantly covered up by estate agents' signs, you have to search for it...

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 13 January 2005 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

its visible at the moment (its above the cycle shop?)

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 13 January 2005 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

**You know what's coming up next on Popular, don't you, Dr C?**

I've lost track of where Tom has got to without looking...erm, Telstar?

i would disagree w/this. he recorded a lot of crap, and a lot of stuff where the line between crap and genius is really hard to locate.

i still don't know who "d k" is or why s/he loves me.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 13 January 2005 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't imagine what "Sky Men" would sound like without the vocals sounding like that. I think the song is pure camp, which is my appreciation for most of Meek's stuff, but at the same time it's just so out there, it's like nothing recorded before or since. There's a Wondermints cover of "Sky Men" which I'd like to hear sometime.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Friday, 14 January 2005 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I think (somewhat bizarrely perhaps, because it doesn't really fit in with the Joe Meek Sound) my favourite Joe Meek moment is the guide track for Telstar where Joe sings the melody. It's warm and lovely and... human.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 14 January 2005 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

actually i'd love to hear brian wilson covering "sky men" sometime!

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 14 January 2005 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

no love for hobbies by jenny moss?

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I really like "Hobbies". I've also got a weakness for "Till The Following Night" by Screaming Lord Sutch, which I don't think anyone picked yet. One of the few things Margaret Thatcher and I agree on is that "Telstar" is in our all time top ten.

everything, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Definitely, Gareth! It's great.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
does anyone know anything about the portrait of a genius 4cd box? I've been meaning to pick up the alchemist of pop, but this looks staggeringly comprehensive. bob stanley liner notes, hmmmn.

etc, Monday, 25 April 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

the glenda collins ones are my favourites i think

oh hell yes.

my friend flicka (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 25 April 2005 04:05 (twenty years ago)

portrait of a genius 4cd box?

well holy mackerel!

i wonder how much of this stuff i don't have. although it's tempting to have it all in one place. though, admittedly, my heart only skips a beat for maybe 1/2 of even that two-disc anthology.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 25 April 2005 05:03 (twenty years ago)

i find "telstar" really sad--does anyone else?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 25 April 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

i think it's the back story. space-age techno-optimism colliding with fatal occult paranoia....

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 25 April 2005 05:07 (twenty years ago)

amst, have you by any chance heard the ysleta high school marimba band album?

my friend flicka (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 25 April 2005 06:14 (twenty years ago)

haha, i have heard the ysleta high school marimba band!

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 25 April 2005 07:45 (twenty years ago)

Bob Stanley liner notes

Castle Music, use other writers please.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 25 April 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

**i find "telstar" really sad--does anyone else? **

Yes! Even before I knew about Joe Meek's back story. "Telstar" is profundly melancholy, the sound of a lonely satellite.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Monday, 25 April 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

Out of the number ones Tom has done so far on Popular, "Telstar" would have been my only 10 - its ultimate failure endows it with perfection.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 25 April 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

I teared up listening to "telstar" around two hours ago, before heading off to work.

etc, Monday, 25 April 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

the ysleta high school marimba band album?

no, what's it all about?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 25 April 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Hmmm...the Portrait tracklist is up at Amazon - 104 tracks, to be released tomorrow. I'm kind of surprised that "Crawdaddy Simone" (by the Syndicats) and "Please Stay" by the Cryin' Shames aren't on the box, as those are two of my favorites. I'm kind of obsessed with "Please Stay" right now, having played it probably twenty times over the weekend. That organ sound! It's like either a graduation ceremony or a funeral. Those lead vocals are amazing, against all odds (the guy has a lisp!), and before I knew anything about the band, I had imagined the singer to be a black woman. Just now, I pulled out the Drifters version of "Please Stay" - no contest, the Cryin' Shames win. I haven't heard Elvis Costello's version...

Anyone heard the Joe Meek demo of Telstar from the boxset? How is it possible for someone to sing so badly?

Dr.C (Dr.C), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:53 (twenty years ago)

"Baby I Go For You" is a great little song that should accompany a domestic violence scene in a movie.

"Midgets" is delightfully offensive.

I want that box set.

rhw, Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:58 (twenty years ago)

I have heard that demo…I produced the Razor & Tie collection It's Hard To Believe It: the Amazing World of Joe Meek, and listened to TONS of his stuff…"OOOOH-LA-DUH, LA DEE DEE DAH DEE DUH, YEAAHHH…"

love me some Geoff Goddard, so I love "Skymen." never heard "Dumbhead," tho.

Did anyone ever see the BBC doc they did on Joe…wherein Maggie Thatcher sez that "Telstar" is "full of life."

boy was it tuff to work out licensing for that… there was one very shady character who appointed himself the caretaker of Meek-dom who was very difficult to deal with…

veronica moser (veronica moser), Thursday, 19 January 2006 21:35 (twenty years ago)

Haha...there's a "Telstar" demo on the Internet Archive, here...don't know if it's the same one, but yeah...yikes!!

Ernest P. (ernestp), Thursday, 19 January 2006 23:09 (twenty years ago)

god i love the production of the buzz "you're holding me down"
