geeta (geeta), Friday, 7 November 2003 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i would rather soak a tampon in aqua regia and stuff it up my arse than ever listen to this dreck again

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 7 November 2003 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

And no, The 25th Of May's Lenin & McCarthy is the worst title ever. Good album tho, as I recall (some fuXor nicked my copy in 1997).

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 7 November 2003 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Great album indeed. I like the pun though, even though it's bad in the worst way (KNOWINGLY). I saw a whole pile of them for $5 in a sale a few years back.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 7 November 2003 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i KNEW THERE WAS A WORSE TITLE, AND i JUST REMEMBERED IT "MOTHER NATURE CALLS" IIrc by cast.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 7 November 2003 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

surely you are all quite reasonably forgetting "onka's big moka" or whatever tf it's called

Damn, someone got there first.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 November 2003 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I LOVE Will Ferrell!
oh wait, ELF

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 7 November 2003 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors" by Fish.

That's just horrible.

39 Steps + 40 Winks (39 Steps + 40 Winks), Friday, 7 November 2003 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

for a short time in elementary school my third favorite band of all time was EMF (behind REM and INXS - evidently I really loved capital letters).

I'm really embarassed by this. Why did you bring this up, Geeta? Why?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 7 November 2003 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I've noticed that CDs of that color look really sad now that they're old and scratched.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Friday, 7 November 2003 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The Memory of Trees. Awful.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

To see my run-in with Schubert Dip, read here...

Most Humiliating Critical Mis-Step?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I hated _Schubert Dip_ vehemently until I finally actually heard the whole thing. At which point I reluctantly decided it was pretty fabulous, an opinion I still hold.

As for the title, I'd put it at no more than the 50th percentile of dumb as pop albums go.

ara, Friday, 7 November 2003 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

EMF's cover of "Search and Destroy" is on loop in the 9th circle.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Friday, 7 November 2003 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

What about limbizkit's Chicken & Stars & the Hot Dog Flavored Water?

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 7 November 2003 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

That's on loop in my bedroom. For the ladies.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Friday, 7 November 2003 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

no love for Fiona?

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 7 November 2003 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Eno sampled the drum loop of Unbelievable for a song on Nerve Net/My Squelchy Life, giving them far more credence than they deserved.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 7 November 2003 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, the breakbeat which underpins Unbelievable was not the creation of EMF or their producer, Pascal Gabriel. It's a sample from Ashley's Roachclip, recorded in 1974 by the Soul Searchers. A number of well-known tracks utilise that same loop - most notably, PM Dawn's Set Adrift on Memory Bliss.

Palomino (Palomino), Saturday, 8 November 2003 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Fiona? What's the hell's wrong with Heart Like a Gun?

ara, Saturday, 8 November 2003 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

that's funny, eno credited EMF for it. I hope they didn't get any money then. because I'd rather they die pennyless and alone.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Saturday, 8 November 2003 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

One of them already did.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 8 November 2003 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The guy's vocals... they're quite thin aren't they?

Eat to the Beat is a pretty bad name for an album.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 8 November 2003 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

er... what's the pun in Schubert Dip? I cannot see it. I just cannot see it.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 8 November 2003 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

He was probably talking about the title in the preceding post.

OleM (OleM), Saturday, 8 November 2003 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

well now I feel like an asshole!

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Saturday, 8 November 2003 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, so he is. What actually _is_ a Schubert Dip anyway?

Oh, my 3 year ol daughter has just arrived and insisted I write her name. So here it is:

Sarah-Jane

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
That Alex in NYC story about the interview is prizeworthy.

Today I came across a NY Times article about EMF written by Simon Reynolds in 1991!:
