Pitchfork Parody: Abbey Road review

Lovely satire or cranky troll?
Discuss.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Friday, 7 November 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

There wasn't really much bite to that, was there? Hey, Pfork frequently uses personal anecdotes to start reviews! Hey, they're frequently critical! Whatever.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i love the green though.
not as much parody as homage, like Scary Movie 3

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like Pitchfork, and even I'm sick of all of the hating on Pitchfork threads.

Nicolars (Nicole), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

in the way that Scary Movie 3 is an homage to Airplane!, yes.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 7 November 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Scary Movie 3 was made by the same people who made Airplane! Were they homaging themselves?
Can you homage the fire?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 7 November 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

can you fromage the fire?

Al (sitcom), Friday, 7 November 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to take a moment to clarify Pitchfork's official position re the haters:

(l, r) Ott, Schreiber

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 November 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm slightly ashamed to admit that I found that parody hilarious.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 7 November 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, jaymc, flip that shit.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Friday, 7 November 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

How long has Eminem had arthritis?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 7 November 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Coke fingers, Dom.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Friday, 7 November 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

But Schreibs looks so peaceful when I drive home from work and see him in the window of the Pfork office, typing away. You, on the other hand...

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 November 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a nightmare walking, psychopath talking?

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Friday, 7 November 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Erm, sure!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 November 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

This guy should do parodies more often. It's far more convincing than his real review of the album:
"the most stirring, beautiful, magical piece of music that the 20th century has ever heard."

And his review of Sgt Pepper seems almost like a parody in itself: "Easily the most revolutionary album of all time". Although that line is repeated so often that it must be true.

All the home-grown review sites have verrryyy bright background colours (such as the green). It's also usual for the text to span the entire screen. It's the Starostin-influence in full swing.

Not quite sure if it's entirely fair to call Bangs' influence a 'cancer', but I certainly hope Schrieber's taking notes.

Nomen Nescio, Saturday, 8 November 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a successive colour contrast effect. This screen now looks pinky-red, thanks to all that green.

Offtopic: Retina Singe, Classic or Dud?

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Saturday, 8 November 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Poor web design is one thing, but that's criminally negligent web design. There oughta be a law.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 8 November 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you sue for optic nerve damage?

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Saturday, 8 November 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Not quite sure if it's entirely fair to call Bangs' influence a 'cancer', but I certainly hope Schrieber's taking notes.

I don't read any Bangs or gonzo writing in Schrieber's style.

C'mon guys, it's like you're not even trying here ...

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Sunday, 9 November 2003 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Schreiber has a "style"? He's written 15 record reviews in two years. The criminality of that comparison is more than stylistic.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Sunday, 9 November 2003 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Although in terms of the article in question-- which does explicitly refer to Ryan's ugly Har Mar review (and my Evan Dando one was uglier, to be fair here)-- there's something to be said for the egomania and entitlement that's infected music writing. I'd agree that it's largely due to Bangs making critics look like "rebels" in the face of a mollifed "corporate music industry," but the prerequisite there is rockstars' detached egomania as something to rail against. With the accessibility we have to Radioheads and Britneys, and to the machinations of the industry, it's a tough sell trying to get your back up about it these days.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Sunday, 9 November 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm new. :(

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Sunday, 9 November 2003 08:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Rollie, don't apologize for a thing, you're one of scant few positive additions to staff in recent memory (and that was Ryan's decision, Ryan-haters).
