uh yeah, click those links.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 8 November 2003 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

please don't go see the new "Don Caballero."

chooped liver, Saturday, 8 November 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i might, especially if damon che is playing stuff off of the new thee speaking cananries album. then again, i guess i'm just a bastard.

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 8 November 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think he'll play any of that stuff, would've been a lot cooler if he'd just toured as Thee Speaking Canaries rather than ripping off his old bandmates' name in some sort of cynical attempt at getting people to see him play.

chopped liver, Sunday, 9 November 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

so what's the story on that anyway? have you heard anything else besides what the Fork In Its Own Ass reported?

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 9 November 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know about him, but I really like Don Julio, and Don Eduardo, and El Tesoro, and Chinaco, and Cabo Wabo, and Petron. Even though I can't afford any of them anymore.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Sunday, 9 November 2003 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

last time i checked, sammy hagar wasn't in don cab, though he could be in thee speaking canaries.

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 9 November 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

jc, basically what I heard (from y'know other guys who could lay claim to the name "Don Caballero") is that Damon got some dudes from Pittsburgh who weren't in the original band (then again they had like 273 different bass players) to tour as "Don Caballero" without informing anyone else. I'm not entirely sure if they're playing older material, but I'm guessing maybe some? Anyway, if there's no Ian Williams, it seems pretty pointless to me.

hstencil, Sunday, 9 November 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

woah. I was wondering how exactly a friend of mine saw Don Caballero recently. I'll tell him about this tonight.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 9 November 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

the "How many Don Caballeros have you seen live?" thread in 5....... 4..........

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 9 November 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I never saw the trio lineup, but I saw about a zillion bass players and one lineup (opening for Atari Teenage Riot!) with ex-Bitch Magnet and current Coptic Light guitarist Jon Fine in the Mike Banfield slot.

hstencil, Sunday, 9 November 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Just saw the four-piece with Mike Banfield and S&S Eric once, and the "Don & Stress" trio lineup (arf arf). After all that, despite me liking the Don records a lot more than the Storm & Stress records, i thought the Storm & Stress live show was better than all of the above..

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 9 November 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

That's because modest drum maniacs are 1000 x cooler than arrogant drum maniacs.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 10 November 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah for some reason I can't see Kevin Shea wanted to pummel somebody for stealing his fifth of vodka or anything.

hstencil, Monday, 10 November 2003 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

That's one of the funniest mental images ever, actually.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 10 November 2003 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
DDB WHAT'S UP WITH THE NEW LINEUP?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

they played too much for respect shit. the band looked like mooks. i miss gum chewin' ian williams.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Did they let Lemmy and Diamond Dave back in the group?

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 4 March 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
So did anyone see Don Cab: The Next Generation?

I saw that Relapse signed the nu-Don Caballero to a contract and they have an album coming out in early 2006. It still seems weird to me that Che would form a new band around the old name. I guess it is a chance to capture in to the mathy-ambient metal that is selling some units on a sound that Don Cab had ten years too early.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 22 December 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

So its gonna sound more like the 1st album then?
The(e) Speaking Canaries are very underrated so why doesn't he do something with them? Have they ever toured?

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Thursday, 22 December 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

The Speaking Canaries did a short tour in May 2005 on the East Coast. I saw them play in Pittsburgh once around the time Songs for the Terrestrially Challenged came out. It was GREAT. I really loved the original incarnation with Damon Che, Noah Leger and Karl Hendricks. It would be great if Damon could keep a consistent line-up in any of his bands, though.

ng-unit, Thursday, 22 December 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

why did i sell 2

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

bad move

cutty, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

in a similar vein, the russian circles LP has been kicking my ass

cutty, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

I hope I didn't sell it but I think I did :((((((

Got it for like 6 bux in 2004?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 18:36 (seventeen years ago)

four weeks pass...

Got the new one in the post from Relapse today. If the last one was For Respect Revisited, this one might be Don Cab 2 Redux... With Vocals! It's an odd beast, especially since the last one was more straight-forward songwise.

MacDara, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 21:47 (seventeen years ago)

I got my lp in on saturday.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

Don Cab w/ vocals sounds pretty odd. What kind of sounding vocals do they use? Cookie monster? Hardcore yelps? Three part choral harmony?

earlnash, Friday, 22 August 2008 05:40 (seventeen years ago)

Did they hire Lars Hollmer to yelp?

Øystein, Friday, 22 August 2008 09:47 (seventeen years ago)

the(e) speaking canary type vocals

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 22 August 2008 11:59 (seventeen years ago)

great band!

QuantumNoise, Friday, 22 August 2008 12:01 (seventeen years ago)

(Speaking Canaries, I mean)

QuantumNoise, Friday, 22 August 2008 12:01 (seventeen years ago)

ZOMG new Don Cab

X-101, Friday, 22 August 2008 12:06 (seventeen years ago)

anyone going to Don Cab + An Albatross + Ponytail tomorrow?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Friday, 22 August 2008 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

meh really not sure bout the singing on this :(

X-101, Saturday, 23 August 2008 08:13 (seventeen years ago)

i think its a good album.

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 23 August 2008 14:43 (seventeen years ago)

I don't hate it, but it's going to have to sink in more than WCLP.

(Although to be fair, it took me a long time to get into American Don as well, and now that's my favourite Don Cab album. Those sample-looped guitars get me every time.)

MacDara, Saturday, 23 August 2008 19:14 (seventeen years ago)

Really? American Don was the album that made me stop paying attention to DC. I should find my copy and revisit. Everyone I talked to since then seemed to think the band went downhill after American Don.
Rock music needs less singing, not more.

Øystein, Saturday, 23 August 2008 22:08 (seventeen years ago)

two months pass...

they've good. Damon is high-functioning alcoholism in action. Reall, flabby and fat and nonsensical. But tight.

what U cry 4 (jim), Thursday, 13 November 2008 02:19 (seventeen years ago)

they're even

what U cry 4 (jim), Thursday, 13 November 2008 02:19 (seventeen years ago)

and obv. the number of wrongs i wrote there

what U cry 4 (jim), Thursday, 13 November 2008 02:19 (seventeen years ago)

now that i have heard a lot of stories about damon from ppl that have met him i can't like this band anymore

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 13 November 2008 02:24 (seventeen years ago)

Am I the only one that likes the new album? Okay, I love 3/4ths of it anyway - take out all the vocal songs and I think it stands up pretty well with the rest of their catalog.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 13 November 2008 04:37 (seventeen years ago)

I saw them on Friday and Damon's flabby obnoxiousness was basically the saving throw of an extremely-over-the-hill band's undistinguished set. (OK he is pretty awesome on drums too yeah.)

The Slash My Father Wrote (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 13 November 2008 08:50 (seventeen years ago)

is he really fat these days?

cutty, Thursday, 13 November 2008 12:53 (seventeen years ago)

the big chunklet article from a few years ago about the events leading up to the break-up of don cab v. 1 is still classic and hilarious/sad

metametadata (n/a), Thursday, 13 November 2008 13:02 (seventeen years ago)

looks like a scan of the whole article is available here, it's very long but worth the read: http://www.swanfungus.com/2007/04/don-caballero-final-tour-diary.html

metametadata (n/a), Thursday, 13 November 2008 13:31 (seventeen years ago)

I like the new album.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 13 November 2008 13:40 (seventeen years ago)

I'm going to see them tomorrow night. I wonder what the crowd hipster-to-metalhead ratio will be...

MacDara, Thursday, 13 November 2008 13:43 (seventeen years ago)

i would guess 100-to-0

metametadata (n/a), Thursday, 13 November 2008 13:51 (seventeen years ago)

i would guess 100-to-0

I would have too, but now that they're on Relapse and playing heavier music akin to their early stuff, I'm not so sure.

MacDara, Thursday, 13 November 2008 13:56 (seventeen years ago)

so, what's some other dirt on damon besides the stuff in that tour diary?

original bgm, Thursday, 13 November 2008 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

Back from the Dublin show, which was actually very good. They might be just a Don Cab tribute act to some, but if they are, they're a damn good one.

MacDara, Friday, 14 November 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

oh man, i love tour diaries

some know what you dude last summer (Jordan), Friday, 14 November 2008 23:34 (seventeen years ago)

Damon Che seems like a total arse, but I love the image of him talking to the insurance company on the phone, just after they almost died in a pile-up, IN A PAUL STANLEY VOICE.

Matt #2, Saturday, 15 November 2008 13:18 (seventeen years ago)

i love tour diaries too but that don cab one is easily the best i've ever read, since it's from an outside (ie critical) perspective

using a click track yanks you out of the realm of live drumming (n/a), Saturday, 15 November 2008 15:37 (seventeen years ago)

Track 3 from World Class Listening Problem is one of my favorite songs of the last few years. I Dj it constantly and it's always stuck in my head.

I avoided Don Cab the first time around, so the new band really isn't a problem for me. They've been awesome both times I've seen them.

And I've had both positive and negative personal experiences with Che. But I don't care. I judge him as a man separately. As a musician, he's pretty untouchable.
