the barron nights? come on. try harder please. Spocks beard, in case you don't know, are a latterday prog rock band, from the usa, who sell a lot of records, and who play live to a lot of people. I like progressive rock shitloads, like about 3/4 of the music I listen to is either progressive rock or krautrock. Lots of people I know who are into the same musick really rate these, I mean they love them, and think they are as good as yes, or genesis or whoever. I fucking cannot stand them. I mean, if I hear one of their rekkids, it's either got to come off, or I've got to leave. It's a real strong visceral reaction. I can see that by some standard or other, tehy're a "good" band, like they all play well together, and the singer can sing in tune and stuff, but still, I just find them unbearable. It's a combination of two things - the songs, ehich are a shirribly trite and unloveable as robbie williams' songs, and the instrumental breaks, which a good proportion of the time sound awfully familiar, like they took the intro to yes' tales from topographic oceans (for example) and shifted a few notes around (i know there is probably more to it than that really, but that's what it sounds like to me). People seem to love it though. Well, some people do anyway. This friend of mine did me a cd-r of all this modern stuff that he liked. Man, I never thought I'd say there was a prog band worse than pendragon, but christ there were all these bands doing these horrid trite songs in a similar style, and calling it progressive rock because there was a long mellotron break in the middle, or the intro was in 9/8 or something. Horrible, progressive music means more to me than that. The singer converted to hardcore xtianity, and left the band because god told him to (true!!!) but the band kept on going, and the singer just released a double album extoling his faith!! Argh!! twice the horror!!!

aw, don't they just have the most precious lyrics?

Everyone's so pathetic
Always talking all the time
What makes them think that
I give half a shit what's on their minds, minds, MINDS!

Only in defense of the drummer: I once saw drummer Nick D'Virgilio perform with the excellent singer/songwriter Jonatha Brooke. He tastefully played bass with his fingers and subtly handled all the percussion with his feet.
