"Teacher Teacher," by Rockpile.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 8 November 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

If it's a Catholic school they're going to teach in, might I recommend "Catholic Boy" by hardcore band CH3

Father Flynn, dressed in black, splinters from his ruler lodged in my ass. Catholic Boy in a Catholic school...live and die by the same ten rules!

Yay!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 8 November 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

3mb - Jazz Is The Teacher
Daft Punk - Teachers

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Saturday, 8 November 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Shouldn't there be a lot of songs like this from that "Stay in School" period in Hiphop?

Maxwell von Bismarck (maxwell von bismarck), Saturday, 8 November 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"headmaster ritual" by smiths.
"happiest days of our lives" by pink floyd (with great helicopter "search and destroy" rotor-speed wind-up, and also the screaming/wailing seque into "brick #2")
"baggy trousers" by madness.
"remember" by john lennon.

(with the exception of lennon, most of these songs have at least a partially sharp axe to grind with the peculiarly english "tradition" of corporal punishment, while "without using hands" explores various french alternatives)

george gosset (gegoss), Saturday, 8 November 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

"without using hands" is by sparks, btw.

george gosset (gegoss), Saturday, 8 November 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, "happy hunting ground" is another great sparks song, more generally about school (but quite possibly about "certain teachers" too).

george gosset (gegoss), Saturday, 8 November 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Dead Prez "They Schools"

Lynskey (Lynskey), Saturday, 8 November 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"Fuck my school" by the Replacements

Cacaman Flores, Saturday, 8 November 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

ABBA's 'When I Kissed The Teacher' is surely all one needs?

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 8 November 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Young MC, "Principal's Office"
Black Box Recorder, "The School Song"

Jeremy (Jeremy), Sunday, 9 November 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh come on, that Police song, "da doo doo do da da da da" or whatever it was called.

4kflka, Sunday, 9 November 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

For pop-pap;

Busted - 'What I Go To School For'

Michael Dieter, Sunday, 9 November 2003 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Venom, "Teacher's pet"

tod (tod), Sunday, 9 November 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and Louis Philippe has a "Teacher's pet" too.

tod (tod), Sunday, 9 November 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

but you wanna go with Venom because they actually mention a teacher. several times. and they use dirty language. a lot of it.

tod (tod), Sunday, 9 November 2003 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't there some goofyass teacher song from .38 Special associated with the movie Teachers in 1984? Some Nick Nolte vehicle that everyone's forgotten along with Legal Eagles and other such mid-decade yawnfest films? (And if anyone seriously watches Terms of Endearment and Out of Africa these days, I must weep.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 9 November 2003 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

who did that song about having a strange teacher who wears dark glasses? that one.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 9 November 2003 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"Future's so bright (I gotta wear shades)" by Timbuk 3 is the one jel is thinking of.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 9 November 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, why don't you think 38 special is something to be avoided ? and Cybele, why ?
(i haven't heard it)

george gosset (gegoss), Sunday, 9 November 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Wake Up Everybody~H.Melvin+Bluenotes
Marionette~Mott

thomas de'aguirre (biteylove), Sunday, 9 November 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

(And if anyone seriously watches Terms of Endearment and Out of Africa these days, I must weep.)

i weep also. i saw both those this summer. both! "Out of Africa" was the one that put me off movies altogether. it just wouldn't end. i couldn't believe it. haven't seen a single movie since. seriously.

tod (tod), Sunday, 9 November 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Heaven, "Rock School." "Don't need to be an Einstein to know that rock will last!!" I mean, Tenacious D couldn't have said it better.

mike a (mike a), Sunday, 9 November 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

might as well add one more Venom song to that: "School daze".

tod (tod), Sunday, 9 November 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

wait, didn't WASP have a "School daze" too? this has to stop.

tod (tod), Sunday, 9 November 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, why don't you think 38 special is something to be avoided ?

Haha! I will never abjure the memory of my first ever concert. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 9 November 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

cybele (cybele), Sunday, 9 November 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Not really funky but quite rockin';

Super Furry Animals - The Teacher

Is it stretching it to say "I Don't Like Mondays"?

Nick H, Sunday, 9 November 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Jonny Mathis "Teacher Teacher"

It's on his greatest hits Vol II, I believe. Green cover. I dunno where you would find it on CD, though.

paige, Monday, 10 November 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Freddy Boom-Boom Cannon's "Abigail Beecher, Our History Teacher."

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Monday, 10 November 2003 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Elton John: Teacher I Need You
Sting (I know!): Don't Stand So Close To Me

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Rage Against The Machine: Bullet In The Head

"The teacher stands in front of the class
The lesson plan he can't recall
The students' eyes don't perceive the lies
Spread against The fucking wall!"

Ahhhhh, great ... these were the times.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh wait, that's not 'Bullet In The Head, but rather 'Take The Power Back'! Great track, magnificent album. All the nu metal dorks could have saved their efforts, they accomplished nothing that this band didn't.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Pulp - P.T.A.

Poppy (poppy), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

the kinks, schoolboys in disgrace. pretty much the whole album, including "schooldays," "education" and "headmaster." and maybe even "jack the idiot dunce."

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

hel-lo: rock n' roll high school. listen to it. then rent the movie. then watch it 100 times. then think more about the ramones.

scout, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the entire soundtrack to Teachers has songs about teachers. E.g., Bob Seger's "You Got Me Understanding"

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Redd Cross-"I Hate My School"

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The title track to "Teachers" was by Ian Hunter, and has a hopeless chorus rhyme of "Pleased to meet yer / I'm the teacher" where "Meet yer" is pronounced "Meacher".

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

six years pass...

Revive with songs about teachers, teaching, learning, schooling, and education in the broad, 4th-season-of-The Wire sense?

Boogie Down Productions, "You Must Learn"
The Clash, "White Riot" and "Clampdown"
Mary J. Blige, "Work That"
De La Soul, "Trying People"
K'naan, "ABC's"

And the inevitable love metaphors:

Count Basie/Joe Williams, "Teach Me Tonight"
Sam Cooke, "Wonderful World"
Daryl Hall & John Oates, "Adult Education"

The Coup: "Wear Clean Draws"

You my daughter, my love, mo' than kin to me
This fo' you and the women that you fin to be
Tell that boy he's wrong, girls are strong
Next time at show and tell, play 'em our song
Tell your teacher I said princesses are evil
How they got all they money was they kill people
If somebody hits you hit 'em back
Then negotiate a peace contract

Tuomas, Thursday, 27 May 2010 09:41 (fifteen years ago)

Lou Reed, "Coney Island Baby"

You know, man, when I was a young man in high school
you believe it or not, I wanted to play football for the coach
And all those older guys
they said he was mean and cruel, but you know
I wanted to play football for the coach

Lou Reed, "My Old Man"

When I was a young boy in Brooklyn
Going to public school
During recess in the concrete playground
They lined us up by twos
In alphabetical order, Reagan, Reed and Russo
I still remember the names
And stickball and stoopball
Were the only games that we played

Wenlock & Mandelson (Tom D.), Thursday, 27 May 2010 10:04 (fifteen years ago)
