this is a thread about Kelley Stoltz's "Antique Glow"

and what an awesome album it is. Known in SF and maybe beginning to be known among TapeOp afficionados and fans of weird psych music, he also just played CMJ with Spiral Stairs doing all of Echo and the Bunnymen's Crocodiles straight through, complete with fog. But back to Antique Glow. It takes balls to start a record with a direct lift from Abbey Road, veer immediately into a bizarre venus in furs pastiche, and then rip off San Tropez. But it works, and the result is a record that sounds like it could have been recorded in 1970. It's amazing. I don't throw shit like that around lightly. You will either hear much more from him soon or never hear from him again. Please tell me someone else out there has heard it.

I got this record
from his publicist--it's cute,
catchy, hook-laden

Influences: Beck,
Robyn Hitchcock, GBV;
who'm I forgetting?

?!?!!

Uh, recording by anyone? Anywhere?

I'm not sure if there are any recordings. He did the same show twice in SF though, and someone might have recorded one of those. There is, though, an actual 4 track version of him playing the whole album, I'll see if I can scare that up (oh, there are some mp3s on his ugly site: http://www.electriccity.org/mp3page.htm). Will Carruthers was at the NYC show and was apparently blown away. It says something maybe that his EatB shows in SF were sold out the same week Ian McCoullough half-filled a venue in town.

But I don't want to make him to sound like a cover artist. And though his solo songs recall a lot of stuff, they do this in the best possible way; his songs sound like old familiar things you've hummed your entire life (well, if you lived your whole life with an extensive music collection). Swirly, weird, "cute" (maybe), sometimes dark, every song a thoughtfully worked out and a winner. My front-runner for favorite album of the year even though most of it was recorded in 99.

(Speaking of the Bunnymen, should I go see them in London? nordicskillz says NO it would be a depressing nostalgia fest, but I saw YES because I am a depressed nostalgia fiend.)

some of it is too Doors-influenced for my ears, but "jewel of the evening" is so completely lovely it almost makes up for it.

He's in Melbourne at the moment, and I think he's going to do the 'Crockodials' thing in a couple of weeks at the Rob Roy with Spiral Stairs (who is also touring Australia at the moment). woo!

Hayden Nicholls (Pop the Weasel), Friday, 14 November 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i was wondering why everyone in melbourne was talking about him. i have my head in the fucking sand

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 14 November 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
weird. i saw a mention of him on the web and it said he was from SF, so i went to myspace to see if i recognized him. i recognized the record store from his photo before i recognized the fact that he was in the picture. Stoltz works at Grooves, my favorite store in the city and i always chat him up. i had no idea he made music.

jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:07 (twenty years ago)

you would like this record

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:25 (twenty years ago)

also, dude whose name I forgot who works at amoeba plays bass in his band. it is a veritable trove of record store employees (can two be a trove? maybe not)

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:28 (twenty years ago)

he has just been through melbourne again. I saw him twice (once acoustic, once with tight band of melbourne scene people) and he was fantastic. can't wait for the new record. he's on sub pop now too, hopefully he gets a bit more well-known.

controversial buffalo stance (haitch), Thursday, 26 January 2006 09:10 (twenty years ago)

The new record on Sub Pop is pretty cool. KS is a craftsman. Writes great hooks, the occasional brilliant song, and it all sounds so GOOD! There are some awesome arrangements on the new album.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Thursday, 26 January 2006 15:46 (twenty years ago)

Been meaning to check this out since I read about it on The Monks website, but never got around to it.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Thursday, 26 January 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

I've really enjoyed The Past was Faster (picked out of a used bin a few months ago). Would never have imagined some of his other projects based on its sound, however.

patita (patita), Thursday, 26 January 2006 16:02 (twenty years ago)

the other albums don't sound much like that one; they've gotten increasingly better produced. that record is pretty scarce now though, and it has a couple of great songs on it

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 26 January 2006 16:34 (twenty years ago)

funny timing. he's on the front page of the SF Guardian this week

team jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 2 February 2006 18:40 (twenty years ago)

i was dissappointed by Antique Glow, but I'd check out his other stuff.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:15 (twenty years ago)

the new record is great.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:44 (twenty years ago)

upthread who says he's doors influenced - otm. its mostly with how the psychedelia is combined with obvious hit you over hte head hooks - that worked in the 60's, but only b/c hte psychedelia obscured the heavy hooks and the heavy hooks weighted the psyche. that combo now? i'm sure there's a timeless way to work it and maybe psychedelia need not be exotic/mystical, but something ain't right -- mabye just b/c it was so derivative of old stuff in gneral. again, i'll listen to the new one. I felt faint promises of goodness with Antique Glow even though I threw it out he window of my car in disgust.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:54 (twenty years ago)

you are taking it too seriously

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 2 February 2006 22:16 (twenty years ago)

anyway, here is the bay guardian story

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 2 February 2006 22:19 (twenty years ago)

i'd never heard this guy before but i'm really liking this album - much MUCH better than the Elected record Sub Pop sent me along with it.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Thursday, 2 February 2006 22:29 (twenty years ago)

xpost-you're probably right.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 2 February 2006 23:07 (twenty years ago)

loving it, beautiful record. CD comes in nice faux-vinyl packaging, too.

weekly handle change (haitch), Monday, 13 February 2006 04:51 (twenty years ago)

it's weird that they picked "the sun comes through" (which pashmina slagged on another thread as "Nothing. Exists.", ouch!) as the teaser single though, there's much more immediately catchy songs on there.

weekly handle change (haitch), Monday, 13 February 2006 05:10 (twenty years ago)

i feel bad that my first post on this makes a big deal about the influences, and it seems to be what every article on him focuses on these days, because i think he's much more than that

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 13 February 2006 06:13 (twenty years ago)

my whole or major problem with this may have been with the production (on A. Glow). i remember not really understanding why the lyrics were bothering me so much. maybe b/c the vocals weren't really mixed in right.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 13 February 2006 09:41 (twenty years ago)

CD release show at 12 Galaxies in SF on Friday, February 17.

I'm going to be in SF all week, and I was pretty happy to see this show is happening.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Monday, 13 February 2006 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Heard "Words" from his new album on the radio today. Beautiful.

inert false cat (sleep), Saturday, 18 February 2006 00:01 (twenty years ago)

I got this from his publicist a couple days ago, and am yet to listen to it. I have too many CD's. I'll give it a spin when I get home.
