if it wasn't for him, then there never would've been a song with polish lyrics that ever made it onto the american pop charts.

I dislike his first big hit "Roses are Red" but for some reason, wound up owning the first version or the album by the same name (since then, another album has been released with the RAR title but it IS different).

Anyway, that first version of RAR was a favorite and frankly, I've been meaning to buy it again since I've lost the first. Why? Because I actually like his versions of such songs as "Mr. Lonely", "Sentimental Me", "I Fall to Pieces", "Crying", etc. His use of vibrato on several tunes is very good.

Just about everything he did after those tunes on that first album that I liked is decidely unforgettable to me....

ps. Beware any album named Roses Are Red that have Blue on Blue or Blue Velvet on it....it is NOT the album I speak of...

"There I've Said It Again" was actually quite nice. But that's it, really.

Blue on Blue, heartache on heartache...

this is all I know of him, on a old Bacharach compilation.

My old blue-haired aunts used to oggle him at shows he'd preform back in his 70's heydey.

Best reference to him is in that ep. of Fresh Prince where Carlton is singing along to "Mr. Lonely."

My op: I luff him. Good for those late, dreary nights (which there are a lot of in my case). Only negative thing I can say about him is that he retreads a lot of lyrical motifs such as that of the on-duty soldier("Mr. Lonely" and "Coming Home Soldier").

six months pass...
Wow - some real winners here. If you don't know anything about the guy, it's probably best not to comment -- you look like fools! He's one of the most successful and most loved performers around.

(P.S. - y'all need some spelling lessons too!)

Among those early-1960s wuss-rockers that my Mom liked, he's far from the best (Gene Pitney), but probably not the worst (Bobby Curtola.) "Blue on Blue" and that Polish song ain't bad. "Roses Are Red" is godawful. "Blue Velvet" I'm indifferent to.

In a most perverse way, all of these early 1960s late 50's crooners are great.

My mom went to college with the Bobby Vinton -- aka The Polish Prince. Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.
