Church organists who think they are Rick Wakeman: Classic or Dud

Classic of course. i havent been to church since i was like 12, but the organist was too prog for school, sure he'd play the hymns, but at the end, as soon as the vicar had processed out, he's digress somewhat, not too much, but his playing would get more strung out and my dad would always point it out to me when he slipped in a bit of "shine on you crazy diamond".

I'm sure he will be invited to Canterbury Cathedral forthwith, then :).

Yeah, totally. Usually involves the final verse being overstuffed with descending scalar progressions on the bass foot-keyboard.

And the congregation smirkiing.

Does your organist also kick off their clunky organist shoes when they're preparing to let out all the stops (literally)?

ooh i dunno. its been nearly 8 years since ive seen him play. and he was up in a little organ cubicle higher up than the congregation. with all the incense in that church im guessing no one would have noticed if he did a j or 2, but im not sure if thats what he was doing or whether he was just a complete ex-progger burnout, whatever he always looked very laid back and didnt say too much.

This would have been so classic back when I actually went to church.

this was basically a rather contrived Rowan Williams joke on my part, Bob - I wouldn't have made the Canterbury Cathedral reference if he wasn't Archbishop thereof :).

Well - and this NO lie, I promise - our Church organist played everything on Black Lace's Agadoo single (and subsequent album)...he also taught me piano, btw.

I thought Rick Wakeman plays like he thinks he's a church organist?

Joe (Joe), Monday, 10 November 2003 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

My father always called the organist at St. Andrew's in Little Rock "Vincent Price." Understandably, Vincent Price wasn't an organist, but you know where my dad was coming from.
