Rhys Chatham--open strings to infinity

Just bought the " an angel moves to fast to see 71'-89' " retrospective on Table of the Elements. Simply cannot get enough of disc two , especially Guitar Trio(1977). Anyone else heard this set ? I love it! Anyone know of other recordings ?

Isn't there a 60 minute track of nothing but gongs on this? I haven't heard the box set but I've got "Die Donnergotter" and "Factor X" on vinyl from ages ago. Those albums are amazing, it's kind of at the Neu end of Glenn Branca for want of a better description, apart from a couple of tracks that head off into a sort of avant-garde marching band kind of thing. He doesn't have quite the same physical impact as Branca I don't think but there's more interplay between the guitarists, I can hear a Television / MX80 influence coming in. I think all the material from those albums is on the box set though, the only other album I know of is called "Hard Edge" that came out on the short-lived Wire Editions label a few years ago. I saw him live at the time supporting Casper Brotzmann in London but he wasn't too good, it was heading off into Bitches Brew territory but the band weren't really getting there. The one track I heard from the album sounded like more of the same so proceed with caution I guess.

yeah, it's great stuff. i like it more than branca, really, whos recorded output never sounds as 'rock' based as chatham. guitar trio is easily the best thing on the box, though - just one note and that's all ya need.

yeah I like to hear this: I have Band of Susans' cover version of guitar trio and its really great.

...and I was listening to the BoS's version of "Guitar trio" yesterday afternoon while cleaning the car (it drowned out the sound of the hoover quite effectively).

I got the "Guitar Trio Is My Life" three disc box set last week (just released on Table Of The Elements) and it's been absolutely rocking my socks off. I love the simple, straightforward massed guitar army repetition, repetition, repetition. Open strings to infinity indeed.

Last years 'Red Grail' is outstanding. A less annoying Glenn Branca ftw. For some reason I intellectually partner the Chatham releases with last years collections of Loren Connors. Connors is on the other end of the spectrum sonically, but equally spacey, more poetic.

Hoping Kevin Shea will break out the wacky drum antics

So I really wasn't too pleased with that set, fwiw. Chatham was doing amazing stuff on trumpet but burying it in highly unimaginative and muddy use of a looping pedal. Shea is sick on drums but his style didn't exactly fit and it was more interesting to watch him than the film.

saw a bunch of cool albany, ny people do the guitar trio a couple weeks ago. six guitars and drums and bass. it was great. drummer was amazing. it was all about the drums and bass for me, actually. (eric from century plants on bass had it locked down. so cool.)

Same group is doing it again 11/20 in Saratoga Springs, NY at the appropriately-named Saratoga Arts Center.

Was listening to The Bern Project a week ago, something that came out just last year that I totally missed. Pretty good jazzy drone rock pieces done with a small band, lots of stuff that starts small and then builds and builds until you get ten minutes in and realise your chair is levitating.

rhys mentioned the eminem thing in a facebook post and i kinda couldn't believe it! hope he got good money for it.

Is there ANYTHING better than Die Donnergötter? It's so epically thrilling, so sonorous and clanging, that whole first movement is one satisfying, rushing drone-out to infinity.
