I need a Jazz Buddy!

I'm 19 years old, and i don't know anyone at all who likes jazz! Everyone i know is into metal etc. I'm very close to london, the jazz capital of the world! But *sigh* with no one to go with. On a positive note i am a student at quite a large university (so perhaps i could find a 'jazz buddy' there). Any suggestions?
Thankyou (from a lonely jazz heart).

Serious ans: I think Ray's Jazz Shop, now part of Foyles bkshop on the Charing X Rd, holds a regular 'jazz appreciation' group, tho' knowing Ray's ("they've never even heard of a Fender Rhodes!") it cld well be a pretty trad affair.

This year in London I've had the pleasure of seeing Sunny Murray, John Zorn, Uri Caine, Wadada Leo Smith, Joe McPhee, Han Bennink, Matthew Shipp, Evan Parker, William Parker, Tony Bevan, etc. etc. play live: I'm off to London Jazz Festival gigs by Tim Berne and Ken Vandermark next week, and Pharaoh Sanders plays the Jazz Cafe in Dec. If I'd had the time/money/inclination I could also have seen Jarrett/Peacock/Johnette, Derek Bailey, Keith Rowe, Eddie Prevost, Dave Holland, John Scofield, Kenny Garrett, Wayne Shorter, Supersilent, Courtney Pine, EST, the Bad Plus, McCoy Tyner, Bob James, David Sanborn, Shakti, Joe Lovano, Herbie Hancock + Bobby Hutcherson etc. etc. etc.

London certainly runs New York a v. close as world jazz capital, fer real

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

no, London is just a very big city that has lots of clubs.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

(I actually have no idea what I'm talking about, don't mind me)

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

But how many of those people live in London?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

or are *from* London? it's a bit like saying "New York is a broken beat town"--sure, there's a scene there, but how much is it intrinsic to the city itself?

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I think there's a diff between a 'scene' and a 'jazz capital'

Andrew L (Andrew L), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 07:05 (twenty-two years ago)

All the jazz cats are from london, like Sun Ra, Albert Ayler, Arthur Doyle, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, etc -- therefore, London is the World Capitol Of Jazz. Case closed. Next . . .

Jimmy's just getting into jazz so i'm not ragging on him. Andrew, on the other hand, seems to have gleefully lost his mind. It's a major tour spot, sure, but how many of those people play in London more than once a year? Roughly half of your list *live* in New York.

Dave M. (rotten03), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

they have jazz. we have improv. 'we' are 'better' than you.

but 'seriously' now: we have AMM. they have borbetomagus.

so its a draw.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)
