Inspired by the curious case of De La Soul is Dead.

Tusk! which I still haven't heard apart from "Brown Eyes" (thanks Nate)!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

YOU HAVEN'T HEARD TUSK?!!!

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 10 November 2003 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm too busy yelling my name into the phone and basking in Ned and Donut Bitch's sycophantic glow. Oh wait.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

plus I'm waiting for it to be remastered

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

(haha that's gotta be the lamest excuse ever, doesn't it?! but it's true!)

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, you could have been lamer if you were waiting for it to come out on a Gold Disc.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Monday, 10 November 2003 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

the yelling into the phone bit i believed, the remastered bit...from a man putting all his albums on mp3???

gaz (gaz), Monday, 10 November 2003 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

the rolling stone review covers it pretty well, though it makes "Tusk" sound weirder than it is

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 10 November 2003 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

the reaction to de la soul is dead was actually people reacting to "ring ring hey hey"

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 10 November 2003 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

For the past couple years I've known Rhino's gonna put it out again, so I'm just waiting for that to happen.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

for the longest time I thought only I understood how parade was prime grade prince and thought the cw was it was second tier prince like around the world in a day or controversy but it turns out I was wrong

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 10 November 2003 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

matos if you know people at rhino I got alot of e-mails I need you to forward for me

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 10 November 2003 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"waiting for it to be remastered" = "waiting to get it in the mail for free"

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Monday, 10 November 2003 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

[rubs hands together]

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of "Around The World In a Day", I thought the critics hated that and "Lovesexy". Both are doing quite well on the Acclaimed Music list though, so I guess some critics must have liked them.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 10 November 2003 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I've met one person in my entire adult life who dug ATWIAD. Her name is Lynn Taylor, she lives in Columbus, OH, and she is an otherwise trustworthy individual.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Monday, 10 November 2003 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say that most heavy metal classics (or alleged classics) suffered a long period of neglect or abuse before being allowed into the canon. "Paranoid" seems like a good example. "Appetite for Destruction," to a lesser degree.

Pavement, "Wowee Zowee"
Donny Hathaway seems to enjoy greater esteem these days than ten or twenty years ago.

dylan (dylan), Monday, 10 November 2003 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Around the World in a Day is good.

dylan (dylan), Monday, 10 November 2003 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Very very good.

I'm too busy yelling my name into the phone and basking in Ned and Donut Bitch's sycophantic glow. Oh wait.

We seek to provide the perfect brain tan.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 November 2003 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you fellas ought to take it over to the "Albums Generally Regarded As Rubbish" thread...

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Monday, 10 November 2003 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I heard at a party once that Lynn Taylor is also a great fan of Klaatu. But I still like Around the World in a Day. 'Course I haven't listened to it in at least ten years.

dylan (dylan), Monday, 10 November 2003 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Psst, I know a secret about the guys in Klaatu...

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Monday, 10 November 2003 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Really? 'Cause I heard that the bassist used to date one of the guys from Supertramp.

dylan (dylan), Monday, 10 November 2003 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Around the World in a Day was the first record I ever bought on its day of release... and it didn't disappoint.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 10 November 2003 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

did any of yngwie malmsteen's records ever get good reviews?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 10 November 2003 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I gotta echo the Tusk- love upthread...
I've long felt that Lindsey Buckingham deserved at least a fraction of the attention heaped on fellow Cali-pop maven Brian Wilson, specifically for his work on this record.

My only complaint re: Tusk is that Buckingham's songs are noticeably superior (his best ever) to Nicks and McVie (calm down, it's only an opinion), resulting in a more disjointed effort than Rumours.

He may be a twat, but he's a terribly under-rated guitar player and producer.

Will (will), Monday, 10 November 2003 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Lindsey could be a twat til the end of time and he will still be nothing less than a god to me

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 10 November 2003 05:44 (twenty-one years ago)

what jim said.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 10 November 2003 05:52 (twenty-one years ago)

OK: Empirical evidence time. Could someone please produce two negative (ie. under three stars or verbal equivalent) reviews of De La Soul is Dead from respected publications? Reviews that merely claim it isn't as good as Three Feet High don't count. I recall the record being almost universally accepted at the time of release (although, again, not at the level of 3FH). "A Roller Skating Jam Called Saturday" was unavoidable for half-a-year.

ATWIAD was also highly praised at the time. Though it didn't age well. And then aged back into favor again. -- dS

musicmope (musicmope), Monday, 10 November 2003 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

But that's the whole point of this thread--that everybody THOUGHT nobody liked DLSID but everybody was wrong.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Monday, 10 November 2003 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I have yet to read a bad review for Dodgy. Sure, I didn't read NME at the time (NME are pathetic anyway), but the review I read for "Free Peace Sweet" were largely positive.

Deserved, of course. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 10 November 2003 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Btw. you guys all realise that Kula Shaker's "K" did receive mostly rave reviews upon its initial release?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 10 November 2003 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I always heard that Marc Bolan's later records were horrid, but "Futuristic Dragon" is quite possibly the most listenable record T-Rex ever did.

Adam Bruneau, Monday, 10 November 2003 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't Q give it a really shitty review at its time of release?
