Queer Eye for the Metal Guy: How do I organize/store 2,637 cardboard promo CDs fabulously?

Ugh, I'm just simply drowning in Immortal, In the Woods, Vader, and Ulver cardboard advance CDs. Isn't there an XLarge-sized Case Logic way to make sense of all this mish-mosh? *Wink*

those are for people who secretly hate music.

You could give them to me. But I'm greedy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 November 2003 06:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm having trouble shoving my big CDs into those tiny little slots. They just don't fit.

And Ned, I want to get organized, not plunderized.

you mean pluNEDrized

I had this problem too. I had so frickin' many slipcase promos that I just couldn't sift through them and thus I might as well not have owned them at all.

So I Case Locic-ed the the whole damn lot, discarding generic label slipcases and, inserting the specific slipcases which fitted and "archiving" (read: putting in a big shoe box) the rest. It's worked really well, and I can now flip through and listen to loads of stuff I'd pretty much forgotten I ever had.

those are for people who secretly hate music.

??? this is unreasonable thinking.

OTM!!!! Case Logics, too.

Pick the best 100 and throw the rest away.

Seriously, you'll be far happier for it.

Actually, take the excess 2537 to Wacken or Milwaukee Metal fest and give them away, like a little metal anti-tooth fairy.

The sad fact is this is IMPOSSIBLE :(

mei is right. We're moving house soon and my cardstock metal promos underwent a very serious purge. The Carnal Forge albums? Sure, I enjoyed 'em, but are they gonna get any play within the next year? No: to the bin! Suspiria's second album? I loved the first one, but the second didn't do anything for me even though I loved the cover art: goodbye, second Suspiria album! "Emperial Live Ceremony"? Later!

Also, iPod.

Awhile ago I bought some small Tupperware-style plastic boxes that those cardstock promos fit into just about perfectly. I have one that's entirely filled with them, and another that's entirely filled with BYG and other jazz reissues in mini-LP packaging. (Hat titles, in those annoying orange sleeves, fit quite nicely, too.) I need to buy more boxes, though, because the one is full and I've got another box-and-a-half stacked on the shelf.

hey! hey guys! these are the things! ikea kassett cd storage boxes. i finally have most of my stupid cardboard sleeve cds mostly in the same place (four of these). plus they fit stuff up to digipak size. they're cardstock, but pretty sturdy.

Just rip them all, put them on a hard drive, and give them away. They are taking up space and if you really loved those albums enough to physically own them, you would buy them in a real format.

Also, the digital versions will be organized and easier to sort/use/enjoy.

Metal promos are worth selling if you find the right shop. You should definitely get at least £1 each for them, which certainly adds up, if you do want to get rid of that many.

here's my entire CD collection. the wooden boxes are from ikea and cost $10-20 apiece. the prices seem to fluctuate depending on the type of wood used. the ones with the metal tabs are more expensive than the ones without.

i take the CD booklets out of the jewel cases, fold the back cover, and slip the booklet, cover and CD in a little plastic sleeve. the sleeves cost $0.05 apiece, less when i buy them bulk. i think i get 500 for 20 bucks or something like that.

any cardboard-sleeve promos i have go right in there too with the CDs.

that's ~2000 albums (there are a surprising number of 2-cd sets crammed in there) in the boxes. not sure how many digipaks/boxes are sitting out but you can see the benefits of the system. i'd have a ragget-style wall of jewel cases if i didn't have this system.

please pardon the mess, i've been busy

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 18 July 2008 21:32 (seventeen years ago)

Ah, I'd forgotten that. Anyway, enough about me. Back to these metal promos...

krakow, Friday, 18 July 2008 21:35 (seventeen years ago)

not sure if it's clear from that photo, but the wooden boxes are rectangular and about one foot wide by six inches tall. each box holds two drawers, or about 200 CDs in plastic or cardboard sleeves. they are big enough to drop jewel cases into but when you do that it's pretty hard to pull the jewel cases out when they get tight. i can stuff these to 90% full with plastic sleeves and still easily flip through, record-crate style.

they get dusty as hell (just like my fingers LOL)

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 18 July 2008 21:38 (seventeen years ago)

do you have like every numero group cd? damn.
