Right, I want some ridiculously big RnB songs. Ones that are so overblown you feel in awe of them. Two examples;

TLC - Red Light Special
Mary J Blige - I Don't Wanna Do Anything

I want my goddamn ears crushed by their stupid gerth and density.

From my small knowledge of New Jack and New Jill Swing, I'm guessing they will feature fairly heavily.

Nick H, Monday, 10 November 2003 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

mary j blige - i'm goin down, love is all we need, all that i can say
jodeci - feenin'
lauryn hill - ex-factor
jade - don't walk away
en vogue - don't let go
toni braxton - unbreak my heart
aaron hall - i miss you
wayne marshall - ooh aah g-spot
r kelly - down low
boyz II men - i'll make love to you

a few ballad types in there (bleh) but sounds like what you want

I would recommend En Vogue's "Funky Divas" as a whole, but if I had to pick only one song, "Free Your Mind" would be it.

Miggie (Miggie), Monday, 10 November 2003 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I have "Funky Divas" and it is indeed fantastic. "Free Your Mind" is the track I'd pick too, although "Don't Let Go" is more like what I'm looking for.

Cheers for those, Steve, Soulseek will be busy tonight.

Montell Jordan 'this is how we do it'. THE bassline!

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Monday, 10 November 2003 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Ghetto Jam by Domino
Freak like Me by Adina Howard
I've Been Thinkin' About You by some british group I can't remember but maybe that was more pop-house than R&B

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 10 November 2003 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

what, no "no diggity" by blackstreet?

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 10 November 2003 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Whilst I would put "No Diggity" probably in my top 3 songs of the 90s, I wouldn't have said the production was that huge; in fact it seems very minimalist for the times, perhaps what made it stand out.

"This Is How We Do It" is more like it I we're coming from a party jam slant.

I got Boyz II Men's "End Of The Road" last night and godammit it's been stuck in my head ever since.

Nick H, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh, don't go NEAR "I'll Make Love To You", then.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

like you want me to
and i'll hold you tight
baby all through the night

geeta, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I think my favorite thing about that song was the bit in the video where the guy copies out the lyrics for his honey. Now that was honesty!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"I BELIEVE I CAN FLY"!

r. kelly fan, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I also don't think they get much more bloated than Whitney's version of "I Will Always Love You"...that was produced by R. Kelly, wuddnit?

da nza, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone said "Unbreak My Heart" yet?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

TLC: No Scrubs
Ginuwine: So Special
I'd say Justin's 'Cry Me A River', but that is of course too new.

En Vogue Don't Let Go OTM

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

yes Dan. the trouble is we're really more in ballad/torchsong territory here. however i feel compelled to mention H-Town's 'Part Time Lover' and whoever did that 'Knockin' Boots' song - neither were big hits in the UK but seemed to do well Stateside?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Braxton's 'You're Makin Me High' has luxurious production if not particularly overblown

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

might as well throw in SWV's 'Right Here' and 911's 'Only You' as well - and OF COURSE Faith Evans' 'Love Like This' which is the best song on this thread by instant default

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i meant 112 not 911

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

SWV!!!!! YES!!!! Don't forget "I'm So Into You"!

And Jade's "Don't Walk Away"!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Case ft Foxxy Brown 'Touch Me Tease Me'

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Blackstreet 'U Blow My Mind'

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

goddamit i don't like this kind of stuff THIS MUCH do I??

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Ginuwine 'Pony' - minimalism never sounded so huge

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm looking for pre-Timbo stuff really, he was the one who put a stop to the stuff I'm looking for. I love Timbo, but not on this thread, although "Pony" is as close as he gets.

Nick H, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

BELL BIV DEVOE

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

actually i think Tim comes closer with 'Cry Me A River' but obv. thats way too recent (tho still already mentioned)

nick h i suggest you search for the 'S/D early 90s r n'b' thread which was fairly recent

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Brownstone - "If You Love Me"
Changing Faces - "Stroke You Up"
Johnny Gill - "Rub You the Right Way" get undressed and slip on this robe. ooooh
Keith Sweat - "Nobody"
Michel'le - "No More Lies"

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)
