So, in the piece on Tracks magazine (http://www.nytimes.com/2003/11/10/business/media/10tracks.html?8dpc) the author sets the new pub apart from the competition with the claim that "Tracks pays little heed to of-the-moment bands like The Rapture and Killing Joke that are a staple of Spin."

WTF? Did they just pick KJ's name out of a hat?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 November 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

haha "of-the-moment"

goato mountington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 10 November 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

that's either a really back-handed diss at the rapture or really high praise for kj

goato mountington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 10 November 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Rollins, Tracks' chief executive, likes the job description. "We are just dudes who grew up listening to music in our parents' basement and now we listen to music in our living rooms," he said.

This says so little, and yet so much.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Monday, 10 November 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Killing Joke a staple of SPIN?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

What the fuckin' fuck??

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 November 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Who wrote the story?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 November 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

david carr.

geeta, Monday, 10 November 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there an e-mail address along with the article?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 November 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha this poor shmoe

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 10 November 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

you want his home address while we're at it?

goato mountington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 10 November 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

David Carr, the quarterback for the Houston Texans?

scott m (mcd), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, all of it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I have his cell number, but you'll have to email me privately for that

no not really (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

and yes, I did the very same spit-take.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

david carr = steve bartman

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

not to mention this: "There is a smattering of newer artists, including My Morning Jacket, the Strokes and Bright Eyes to give older rockers insight into bands whose musical references include the 21st century."

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

this new US mag sucks it's like a yanky version of our duff Word magazine http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"There is a smattering of newer artists, including My Morning Jacket, the Strokes and Bright Eyes to give older rockers insight into
bands whose musical references include the 21st century."

Fuckity fucking fuck fuckness fuckosity!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no. This is making me cringe. I met Alan at a friend's wedding and he was super-nice and cool. I wanted his new mag to be great.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

don't blame Alan for the Times writer's story. (I won't, anyway. I've got a couple reviews due them soon.)

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not Alan Light's fault, it's the Times' fault.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, for chrissakes, even my Mom knows Killing Joke are anything but an "of-the-moment" band.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

of course, Alex, she's been listening to you yammer on about them for 20 fucking years now!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe the confused Times writer got the idea that KJ are an "of-the-moment" band because they played the CMJ kickoff show? Lazy journalism, for sure, but maybe an honest mistake if the dude doesn't know anything about music.

hstencil, Monday, 10 November 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil's theory seems reasonable enough to me, actually.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

of course, Alex, she's been listening to you yammer on about them for 20 fucking years now!

True. Good point.

Lazy journalism, for sure, but maybe an honest mistake if the dude doesn't know anything about music.

I think you just nailed it there, Stence. I was going to fire off an incredulous e-mail to the guy, but it's kinda ultimately pointless.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe he's the guy who wrote the piece on "grunge fashion" a few years back?

hstencil, Monday, 10 November 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

no, I think that was a woman

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I know, just making a joke about the accuracy of the Times' cultural reportage.

hstencil, Monday, 10 November 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

swinging on the flippity-flop

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

TIMES IMPLICATED IN FACT-CHECKING SHOCKAH!

scott m (mcd), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

The next level: have Killing Joke ever been mentioned in SPIN?

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

TIMES IMPLICATED IN FACT-CHECKING SHOCKAH!

Hehehehehehehehehe .....

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the new one got reviewed recently. and "Eighties" made their 100 Best Singles of All Time list in 1989.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The next level: have Killing Joke ever been mentioned in SPIN?

Probably only in passing at most (and invariably inaccurately, if so).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC's "inaccuracy in Killing Joke reportage" = NOT HONORING FIRE

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps someone should email the guy the link to this thread.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Monday, 10 November 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

for what? it's one fraction of one sentence in an article about something else entirely anyway. if anything, the fact that he didn't know who Killing Joke were just CONFIRMS his story--this is a music magazine for people like him!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

But Matos! We are smarter than him! We have to let him know!

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 10 November 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe he meant to say Rage Against the Machine.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Monday, 10 November 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

or the Beatles

Felcher (Felcher), Monday, 10 November 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Big boated ball of bloatation.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 10 November 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

David Carr was once the editor-in-chief of the Washington City Paper. For the City Paper he had a media column where he talked about news coverage (and a bit of entertainment coverage) in the Washington Post and Washington Times and NY Papers. Later he moved to NY where he ended up covering magazines for the NY Times. At the City Paper he left the writing about music to others...

Steve Kiviat (Steve K), Monday, 10 November 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

to be fair this was in the 'business' section so he was still in the role of media critic

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 10 November 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Alan Light lives in my very unrockcritic-like neighborhood in New York. Sometimes I pass him by on my way to work. I suppose I could say hi to him or something, but really, we're just two ships passing in the rockcrit night, or however the cliché goes.
