Talk to be about the early 90' ambient-electronic duo B12.

Allmusic.com gave them 5 stars for their Electro-Soma album.

Are they really that worth it? Or part of the high populairty ambient-craze of the early 90's?

Oh, and Search & Destroy, Classic/Dud, every other cliche here as well.

Do Tell!!

It's part of the ambient craze, definitely, but I still like that old stoner music. They're quality enough, but nothing as special as, say, Black Dog.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 10 November 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Henceforth all early-90's IDM shall be referred to as "old stoner music."

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 10 November 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

well they're sure as hell not worth the $230- some schmuck paid on ebay for one of their CDs.

yes, you read that right. 230 bucks for A COMPACT DISC!!! i've seen other discs of theirs go for 100-150 bucks every time.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

That's when you REALLY need to be pirating music.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

definitely the domain of IDM fanatics. decent stuff, but definitely not worth the ebay prices Vahid mentioned.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a beck track off "stereopathic soul manure" that starts with a b12 sample.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I disagree with each and everyone one of y'all. IDM and ambient at times sure, but they were the purist detroit techno knockoff's across the pond and some of their 12"s still stand up as killer dancefloor techno...the Musicology ep namely. I've rocked dancefloors with Obsessed...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

so you would pay 230 bucks?

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

the main reason i say this is that i know the albums really hard to find and i found it used somewhere for $23.50. . . still in nice condition but still.

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

if you're talking about electro-soma or time tourist you should be able to get those on ebay for not more than 5 bucks. if you're talking about the b12/stasis split cd or the b12 promo cd - hooray! you're rich, andrzej!

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

it's just electro-soma. but is it still good??

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I paid 2 dollars for the B12 record at Holy Cow in Park Slope, Brooklyn. I was just responding to the fact that everyone was saying they were just an "ambient" band, and not even as good as Black Dog at that. I think they were doing something quite different, and definately more dancefloor at times.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I can sell a B12 record for $230? Time Tourist is decent-enough Warp/Bladerunner/Videogame music, but "Dave Brubeck" on 3EP was their high point for me. The first album is awfully thin on ideas. All that 1st-gen Warp stuff aged terrible, like Authechre's first album.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

...except for "444" which is still classic.

L(E^24) (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

both incanubala and electro-soma are still great. you're just not getting high as much anymore. (btw andrezj, 23.50 is a rip-off)

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry i misspelt your name

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

how odd, been listening to "Time Tourist" at lot at work this week. was struck by how the arrangements and sounds *hadn't* dated. i guess not everyone agrees on here.

incidentally my ex-boss had boxes of old B12 12"s in her old office. *checks his collection* The Stasis and Redcell ones in fact. individually worth a lot on eBay, considering they were still sealed, but collectively they might reduce their own value. money eh? odd concept...

martin (martin), Saturday, 15 November 2003 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

time tourist is really good, actually. if memory serves right it's mostly alternate mixes of lesser-known stuff under the redcell and cmetric and other aliases. "silicon garden" and "void comm" are particularly awesome examples of one genre-that-never-was, sort of a downtempo take on cybotron-era electro.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 15 November 2003 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

eight months pass...
yeah. well. getting ripped-off sucks.

ah well, on going back to old threads that are at least a year old. i'm still happy with this. as i'm listneing to it right now agian.

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Saturday, 14 August 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The Time Tourist CD case has different console controllers along the inside of its spine, doesn't it? I remember it being really good, but in an enormous cliché I lent it to a Swedish casanova web designer named Andreas and never saw it again.
