Tell me about schaffel

so? Monstertruckdriver is schaffel. Superpitcher (who I've never heard) does lots of schaffel mixes.

Is all schaffel in 6/8 time? What are the good tunes? How do you mix it into a regular set?

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 07:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Good tunes:

Thomas Fehlmann - Gratis
Michael Mayer & Reinhard Voigt - Unter Null
Borneo & Sporenburg - Boys in Shorts
Akufen - Psychometry
2Raumwohnung - [something I can't remember] (T Raumschmiere Mix)
Superpitcher - Grace
Wighnomy Bros - Bodyrock (this is one I recently discovered, and it's utterly lovely)
Quark - I Walk (Superpitcher Mix)
Mikkel Metal - Nepal
Goldfrapp - Train (Ewan Pearson 6/8 Vocal Mix)

I guess it's all in 6/8 time, though for the purposes of deejaying it can be treated exactly the same as any old 4/4 house track - the mixing with normal house doesn't seem to be that much more problematic than with, say, 2-step and speed garage. Either cross-fade the beats sensitively or wait for a drop-out.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Which of these are available on comps?

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 08:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno. 2-step is in 4/4 so when you mix it with house at least the beats tend to complement.

I've tried mixing both monstertrucdriver and psychometry over regular house (and 2 step, actually) but find it always sounds a complete mess - 6 kicks overlaid on 4 kicks just sounds horrible. I suppose I could try 1.5 bars of 4/4 music to every bar of 6/8, but that would be tricky...

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 08:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Jacob maybe I'm wrong but as far as I can tell most shuffletech only really has four kicks - the waltz effect is created by listen to it as if it were twice as fast as it really is (I usually follow it in 4/4 in my head).

If you follow in 6/8, only the first of every three beats actually uses a kick drum, and the other beats are usually an (absent) implication created by the snares, hi-hats, bass-line and melody being programmed "out of time" with the kicks (my over-used analogy for this is that it's like treating a house track like a rubix cube and twisting it into diagonally juxtaposed square-layers).

So if you beatmatch a shuffletech track's kicks to a normal house track's kicks, only the snares and hi-hats etc. should be conflicting.

Of the tracks I mentioned above, "Gratis" and "Psychometry" are on Michael Mayer's Immer mix, and "I Walk", "Grace", "Unter Null" and the 2Raumwohnung remix are on his Peel Sessions mix (not available on cd). "Nepal" is on Total 5.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I always thought it was just 4/4 with a really extremely "swung" 8th note/ offbeat/.

its not really 6/8 is it? I mean the melodies / bass and everything aren't in triplets and I imagine its all composed in 4/4.

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 05:11 (twenty-one years ago)

it's 6/8 but the 1-2 pulse (boom crack) of house is still there; the snares should match (right?). it's mainly in the hihats, but the basslines and melodies follow the same swing.

typo acapulco (gcannon), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

thomas fehlmann's superbock is a good illustration as it shifts from a house rhythm to a shuffle one as the track progresses.

Elliot (Elliot), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

My favorite thing I've heard from all of this is "Frei" by Freiland, what would someone recommend to me?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

get the schaffelfieber 2 comp that came out this year.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried when it came out but none of the bastards on slsk would let me have it.. I'll search again. thanks

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 05:44 (twenty-one years ago)

thomas fehlmann's superbock is a good illustration as it shifts from a house rhythm to a shuffle one as the track progresses.

Thats what I mean, that its like a house rhythm but with the 8th notes: the tick (of the boom tick, boom tick sound) and all accompaning sounds bass etc shifted late* really late...

In the same way that 2step is a really "swung" 4/4 music.

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah exactly, it's like a weird photo inversion of two-step.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

psychometry is much more lkike a 6/8 rhythm than a lot of the other stuff ive heard of this stuff, like 'i walk'. there are triplet beeps all the way through the psychometry tunes, and the feel of 6/8 is much closer maintained. whereas the monstatrukdriver stuff is more of a 4/4 stomp. i mean, these time signatures are just facts, are they? eg the difference between a 3/4 and a 6/8 is just as much to do with individual perception and feel, as 'number-of-beats-in-a-bar' style counting (cf all those knobs who go about obsessively counting out the beats in stereolab/tortoise tunes...."hey! its in 9/8 and then moves to 7/4!!!!)

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

As pointed out by Mr Stelfox, Rachel Stevens's Sweet Dreams (My LA Ex) is the first schaffel pop hit.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

six months pass...
Can we have an updated search and destroy session for schaffel tracks? I haven't heard anything in a while.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 10 June 2004 05:58 (twenty-one years ago)

The Kohncke mix of Freiland's Frei on Kompakt 100 is wonderful. That's the only new one I've encountered.

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 10 June 2004 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I am guessing of tha above that the Akufen "Psychometry" is actually 3.1 from the psychometry series? Cos sure as hell a lot of the tracks on the series aren't schaffel.

Me, I am sick of scaffel being done pretty average. I can't believe that Superpitcher - Irre has been ignored upthread. Goldfrapp's own we are glitter remix of Strict Machine is great. The Orb and Jimmy Cauty on Spiecher 16 or something is not.

___ (___), Thursday, 10 June 2004 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

the orb on speicher 16 is fantastic

metaboman - role für kale is nice and mixes perfectly into unter null, if you keep it in the mix there are horn fanfares, curdling synths and two basslines all stomping along in unison.

konfekt - drive (cont) is good too, completely emaciated schaffel for a change.

nebbesh (nebbesh), Thursday, 10 June 2004 07:55 (twenty-one years ago)

B...b...but the Orb on Spiecher 16. Orb and Jimmy Cauty do schaffel = it is over.

___ (___), Thursday, 10 June 2004 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

who gives a fuck? - jimmy cauty only gets a name check coz it samples ever pulsating brain. it's a rocker, it gets people lively on the dancefloor = winner. everyone knows that.

nebbesh (nebbesh), Thursday, 10 June 2004 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

T.Raumschmiere - Zartbitter: ambient schaffel

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Robag Wrumhe - "bodyrock" oh yes!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

it gets people lively on the dancefloor = winner. everyone knows that

So does ABBA.

jed OTM.

___ (___), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

again? don't get carried away now!*

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Orb does schaffel" basically means "Thomas Fehlmann does schaffel, Alex Patterson tags along because he's run out of his own ideas", right? And I think Fehlmann has every right to do schaffel since "Gratis" is one of the best schaffel tracks ever made oh my god yes.

Yeah "Bodyrock" is brill. So ungainly and yet so emotional!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 11 June 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

it's one of those songs that is teaching you how to dance to it while it plays.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 11 June 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha that's so spot-on! I imagined a video clip for it which starts with a camera watching some hippopotamous tripping over and landing heavily repeatedly, and then the camera zooms out and you see all these other weird things happening in connection to this, further and further, until you see the entire earth wobbling and pulsing in time with the music.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 11 June 2004 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Exoexpress - A Piece of the Action !!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 11 June 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, the first schaffel hit was Gary Glitter's "Rock & Roll Part II".

Diego Valladolid (dvalladt), Friday, 11 June 2004 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanna see that video Tim!

jed_ (jed), Friday, 11 June 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone know what the snippet of the track that appears a couple of times through "International Snootleg" is from? it goes something like "one day you'll/ return to/ the one you left behind" or something....

jed_ (jed), Monday, 14 June 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"Monstertruckdriver" is in 4/4.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It's "Leaving Home" by International Pony, Jed.

That International Pony-Bass Is Boss compilation is really good btw.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i am thinking t rex's 'hot love' might have just beaten garry glitter as the first schaffel chart hit.

any uk ilm'ers who remember the 70's may remember the AWFUL rock dance that boys used to do to glam rock or rock in general. the one finger in each pocket of the jeans and swinging from side to side. i was playing a bit of schaffel on sunday night and all these guys on the dancefloor started doing THAT dance. it made my night!

stirmonster, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

As pointed out by Mr Stelfox, Rachel Stevens's Sweet Dreams (My LA Ex) is the first schaffel pop hit.

Tim Finney to thre- oh wait.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

stir, that dance is used to great effect in the "Tiger Feet" TOTP appearance!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

also Thankyou Ronan!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

t rex schaffel!

stirmonster, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I am almost scared to click that link.

i wish they all could be california giiiirls!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

that's awesome, stirry.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"Monstertruckdriver" is in 4/4

if this is the case then all schaffel is 4/4. Surely it is 4/4 but has some other time signature in the undertow.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

it's 4/4 with triplets. I listened to it like 5 times in a row last night to confirm.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

how about "the way you make me feel" by michael jackson and
"the whole world" by oukast. I know Mayer's mixed in "the whole world" before...

also Rachel Stevens' "My LA Ex" which Britney passed on like a fool. That would have been a huge hit for her. That is, until she covers White Town's "Your Woman" ...

david day (winslow), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

David, Rachel's been covered upthread. Her 'Some Girls' is poised to be the 2nd ever schaffel pop hit.

As for MJ, the beat doesn't quite match the requirements.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

it kinda does.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone know what the snippet of the track that appears a couple of times through "International Snootleg" is from? it goes something like "one day you'll/ return to/ the one you left behind" or something....
-- jed_, June 14th, 2004 6:02 PM. (jed)

It's "Leaving Home" by International Pony, Jed.
-- Ronan, June 15th, 2004 6:50 AM. (Ronan)

no no! "leaving home" is the rhythm track! the vocals on "international snootleg" are from "warriors" by losoul (feat. malte schlorf, the vocalist) on playhouse.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks to you too vahid!

in fact the thought of "the way you make me feel" being schaffel makes me happy - barima, obviously, is a creative listener. Nice one.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah ok my mistake! Vahid, is no doubt, as ever, otm.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i cuold swear i just saw that mix mentioned in a blog.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 07:10 (twenty years ago)

how we all feeling about schaffel now.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 24 April 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

it's over! next fad please k thx bye.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 24 April 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

I think that the hard glam component totally peaked with the Alter Ego mix of "Spiel Mit"; I don't think schaffel is dead but it has to regroup with a different emphasis. I still listen to the winsome pop stuff, and the trancier hypnotic stuff like "Amabile".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 24 April 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

great, with the "fad" over the rest of us can go back to appreciating it for what it is - a killer, malleable rhythm that's got plenty of life left in it, no matter what michael mayer or michael f gill might say.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Sunday, 24 April 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

I do think though that the hard schaffel stuff has (temporarily?) been superceded by that super-straight grid-grind sound that labels like Sender specialise in. There was an avalanche of post-"Monstertruckdriver" tracks and that particular incarnation of schaffel now has to work a lot harder than it used to in order to be effective.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 24 April 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I still love schaffel Philip, but you can sort of tell it has fallen out of favor recently.

Anyway here's some good schaffel from 05:

Vitalic - The Past
Markus Guenter - Jellyfish
Markus Guenter - Hi-Jacked
Quasimodo Jones - Good Cock / Bad Cock
Isolee - Enrico

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 24 April 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

ok so if the glam thing is one side of schaffel, whats the other?
the brutal techno driving thing?

cos thats the stuff i like. eg: wasserman "ende der schonzeit" just came on winamp. i dont see that as glam. whats a brutal schaffel top 10? i dont like the glam stuff esp. Quarks remix

ambrose (ambrose), Sunday, 24 April 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

(sorry michael, i was hungover and cranky this morning...)
i have to admit i haven't heard many great schaffel tracks yet this year - though the isolee that opens w/ triplets is one hell of a track. i'd like to hear more people go back to the lurching, unpredictable sound that wighnomys and pastamusik have done - not really glam at all, but not the brutal techno either.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Monday, 25 April 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone have Sherburne's Finger Flicks mix available? It's not up with the other sets he has for download, and Schaeffel Is Stronger Than Pride launched bottle-rockets of awesomeness at my skull.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

i never did a mix called finger flicks.... (shoomp! pwow! - those are bottlerockets.) *blushing into my coffee*

Finger Flicks is by Michael F. Gill! It's good! Probably available on Stylus somewhere, def on slsk

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

are you playing schaffel out with any regularity phillip? I'd definately like to hear a set next time i'm in the bay area.

tylero (tylero), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

i'm barely playing in the bay area, honestly, and not playing much schaffel out. some time i'd like to do an all-schaffel set live as a sort of special event, though. first i gotta get off my ass and book some gigs, i guess!

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 5 May 2005 01:22 (twenty years ago)

James, if you still haven't got ahold of this I can YSI it when I get home (should have offered before)

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 5 May 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

Knarz, brilliant. I think Superpitcher is adorable. But, I have nothing else to contribute here, apart from the schaffel dance, which you really, really don't want to know about.

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Thursday, 5 May 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

Will - that would be greatly appreciated.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Is there any video footage or possibly animated gif action of someone doing a schaffel dance? I mean, I'm just wondering, I wouldn't abuse it by posting it across every thread that ever uses the word schaffel or anything. I swear.

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

my friends nominal (http://www.subnominal.com) do a kind of Popeye-the-Sailor-Man elbow's out sea-shanty kind of dance during the schaffel parts of their set (that I convinced them to do ;))

one month passes...
was listening to todd's "study 03" on the way home from work today, must say I really like the segue into "you can call me now", the way the vocal is a little slower than the preceding track so it feels like it's tugging backwards into an about turn, it feels a little awkward until it resolves itself when the music kicks in... only complaint I have is that I want more (more more) of superpitcher's M83 remix but I understand, constraints of space etc. really nice mix, todd!

c/n (Cozen), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

philip's "schaffel is stronger than pride" mix, which I'm only just now getting round to listening to, late to every party, is awesome too!

c/n (Cozen), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

esp. like the Robag Wruhme, Wuzzelbud “KK” part and where it sits in the mix. and the T Rex as opener is fantastic.

tylero (tylero), Friday, 24 June 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

yeah susan, but you're biased - you heard me cursing over that transition for a week!
as for part 2.... someday, maybe this year, i'll get around to it.... ojalá. first i need to organize my fucking records, because all the great schaffel tracks are hidden on obscure B-sides...

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 25 June 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

Heard that Sweet Exorcist track off the Optimo Psyche Out mix? proto acid-schaffel!

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 25 June 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

i know, with all that overexposure, you'd think i'd be biased in the other direction tho! esp. since i think straight on schaeffel uber energetic happy bounciness might make me nuts, but nice gothic/creepy/sorta dark theater/fucked clown (?) spin here.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Saturday, 25 June 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

Basshunter's "Now You're Gone" is hard-schaffel! It’s quite odd but weirdly pleasing to hear the buzzy bass riffs and hyperactive trance arpeggios and awful quasi-R&B vocals all circling round a (ridiculously fast) stomping glam beat. I never really thought I’d like a schaffel track again but Basshunter has proved me wrong.

Tim F, Monday, 31 March 2008 23:27 (seventeen years ago)

Basshunter is at the bosh-house extreme of the spectrum that runs via bassline to UKG, right? how did schaffel get into this stuff's bloodstream?!

jabba hands, Monday, 31 March 2008 23:34 (seventeen years ago)

I think Basshunter is just straight Swedish bosh-house - any connection with bassline etc. is unintentional. Tomcraft did some schaffel tracks a while ago, I would imagine that's the connection (plus, like, schaffel's ubiquity on fashion adverts etc.).
